New video footage released from day of the fatal Brown University shooting

New Footage Released in Brown University Shooting, Graphic Images Redacted

A day after releasing previously undisclosed audio recordings from the Brown University shooting that killed two students and injured nine others, city officials have released new video footage from the day of the incident, with graphic images heavily redacted to avoid causing further distress.

The Providence Police Department released around 20 minutes of body camera footage showing a chaotic scene as officers scrambled to respond to the shooting on December 13. The footage, which has been heavily edited and partially blacked out, captures the confusion and uncertainty among responding officers who were unsure if the shooter was still in the building.

"This is Brown police. We have confirmed gunshots at 184 Hope Street," one officer says in an audio clip released along with the video. "We do have a victim but we do not know where they are." Just four minutes later, the campus police call back with an update: "We have a suspect description, wearing all black and a ski mask, unknown travel direction."

The city's decision to release this footage comes after News outlets across the US and other countries had been requesting body camera footage, audio clips, and other public records shortly after the shooting. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said that the city waited until after a memorial service was held on Brown's campus before releasing the material.

"We also know that the footage and audio we are required to release will likely be harmful and traumatizing for the victims, families, and neighbors who are still trying to heal and recover from this incident," Mayor Smiley stated. "It is incredibly important to me that the city of Providence remains fully transparent, accountable, and compliant with the state's Access to Public Records Act."

The footage has been released in an effort to satisfy public interest while also taking steps to protect those affected by the tragedy.

πŸ€” The fact that there was a 4-minute delay between the initial report of gunshots and the suspect description is quite interesting πŸ•°οΈ. It's like they were waiting for confirmation or something 😐. Did they not have enough info yet to give out the actual details? And what about the audio clip released yesterday, if it showed the shooter was still in the building, shouldn't that be more clear-cut by now? Maybe the audio didn't capture everything that happened, but still... πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ The redaction of graphic images does seem like a good idea though 😊. It's not cool to traumatize people even after all this time has passed πŸ’”.

omg this is so messed up πŸ€• like can't we just leave the victims & their fams alone for a sec?? but at the same time i get why they wanna release the footage... transparency is key, right? πŸ™ and yeah the whole memorial service thing makes sense too... gotta respect that.

I gotta say, I'm a bit skeptical about releasing this footage now that the memorial service is over... πŸ€” It feels like they're just trying to keep tabs on us, making sure we don't get too nosy or forgetful about what really happened that day πŸ˜’. Redacting graphic images might help, but it's like they think we won't notice if a few bits are bleeped out... πŸ˜‚ What's up with the delay, anyway? The sooner they spill the tea, the better I guess πŸ‘€

idk what's more cringeworthy - the fact they redacted all the graphic images or that the mayor said releasing this footage will help the victims "heal and recover" lol like, newsflash, we've been hearing about this for a month now 🀣. it's great that they're trying to be transparent though, but can't we just get some real answers around what actually happened instead of this edited, watered-down crap?

omg u guys i just saw the new vid from brown uni shooting 🀯 its so intense but they redacted all the graphic parts to spare people's feelings πŸ™ at least it's out now and we can finally get some answers πŸŽ‰ the footage shows how chaotic the situation was when officers arrived on scene 🚨 it's crazy how they were unsure if the shooter was still inside πŸ€” i feel bad for the victims' families & loved ones who have to relive this trauma all over again πŸ˜”

ugh 20 minutes of body cam footage is a lot to handle... can't they just cut it into like 2-3 parts or something? and why do they gotta redact all the graphic images? i get that we wanna avoid causing distress, but like, what's the point of releasing the footage if we're not even gonna show everything? it feels like they're trying to appease everyone at once. and the mayor's statement about not wanting to traumatize the victims' families is nice, but like, don't we want them to be able to see that justice was served? πŸ€”πŸ‘€

OMG, just watched the new body cam footage from Brown University shooting 🀯! Like super intense, the cops are totally clueless at first πŸ™ˆ, but it's actually kinda cool how the department is being transparent about what happened ⚠️. I mean, 20 mins of raw footage can be overwhelming, so good job redacting those graphic images 😷. I'm glad they're prioritizing the victims' families and neighbors' healing process ❀️. The mayor's explanation makes sense too - it's not like we need all that trauma-inducing info πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. Can't wait for more updates on this case!

πŸ€• this is so sad what happened at brown university πŸ€• i feel bad for the victims & their families it's crazy that they had to go through all this trauma again by seeing footage of the incident 😩 anyway, it's good that the city is trying to be transparent & comply with public records laws ⚑️ mayor smiley seems like a nice guy πŸ‘ releasing the footage might help people heal & move forward πŸ’•

I'm not sure why this footage was needed in the first place πŸ€”. The audio clips were already released, and people could make their own conclusions about what happened. Now we're getting a watered-down version of events with redacted parts... it feels like they're trying to control how much info gets out. I mean, if the public wants answers, shouldn't that be just as easy to get? πŸ“Ί

I also don't buy the "protecting victims and families" angle ⚠️. They said that themselves! It sounds like a PR stunt to me. If they're really concerned about avoiding harm, maybe they should've released the footage sooner or found another way to satisfy the public's interest.

It's always about balance, right? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ But it feels like the city is trying to present this as some kind of moral compromise when really it's just a cop-out. Can we get some actual sources on why they waited so long to release this footage? πŸ“°

idk how much redaction is too much tho πŸ€”. 20 mins of footage is still a lotta info, and its gonna be hard for ppl to piece together what really happened without some more clarity πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ. plus, they're saying it'll be "harmful" but thats kinda vague... where exactly? on the victims or their families? or just general public interest? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ also why did they wait till after a memorial service to release this stuff? seemed like a pretty convenient timing to me πŸ˜’.

I'm so sorry for the families & victims of this tragedy πŸ€•πŸ˜”. Releasing this new footage is a huge step forward in transparency, but I can imagine it's still super tough for everyone involved πŸ™. It's great that the city waited till after the memorial service to release it, as you said, Mayor Smiley πŸ™Œ #JusticeForBrown #TransparencyMatters #HealingIsKey

Man I'm still trying to process this... like what's going on? 🀯 20 minutes of footage from that day and it's all redacted... sounds kinda fishy to me πŸ˜’. Can't say I blame the mayor for wanting to protect people, but come on, transparency is key here. πŸ™ Like, we want to know what really went down so we can learn from it. The ski mask description tho? That's some serious sketchy stuff... hope they catch whoever did that ASAP πŸ’₯

Wow πŸ€―πŸ“Ή this is so crazy! I cant even imagine what it must've been like for the police officers responding to that situation, not knowing if the shooter was still in the building... all they can do is hope everyone gets out safely πŸ˜•. The fact that the city waited until after a memorial service to release this footage shows how much care and consideration they're taking with the victims' families πŸ™.

"It takes a big man to say goodbye to his life." πŸ˜” The fact that the city waited until after a memorial service was held before releasing the footage shows just how much they valued the well-being of everyone involved, especially the victims' families. It's about finding that balance between transparency and sensitivity.

πŸ€” The fact that it took them this long to release the footage is kinda weird considering how much was asked for after the memorial service... I mean, I get where they're coming from, but releasing it now seems like a good way to satisfy the public's curiosity while keeping everyone else comfortable. 20 minutes of footage is still less than what other places have released in similar situations. Maybe it's just me, but it feels like there's a fine line being walked here...

man.. this is so sad πŸ€• watching these videos is like reliving the trauma all over again.. i dont know how much more of this our society can take 😩. at least they redacted the graphic images tho, thats a good move πŸ’―. it makes sense that mayor smiley would wanna protect the victims and their families from getting hurt again πŸ™. but still wish we had more info about what really happened that day πŸ”. anyone else feeling kinda frustrated or helpless watching this footage? πŸ˜”

The city of Providence is trying to strike a balance here 🀝. On one hand, releasing this footage is super important for transparency and accountability, especially with all the requests from media outlets and the public πŸ“°. I get that it's gotta be tough to share this stuff, but holding back might have led to more questions and scrutiny.

On the other hand, waiting until after the memorial service was a good move πŸ•°οΈ. You don't want to cause unnecessary distress or trauma for the victims' families and loved ones at a time when they're already grieving πŸ€—. Redacting graphic images is also a nice touch πŸ‘. It's all about finding that sweet spot between openness and sensitivity 😊.

I just hope this footage will help bring some answers and closure to the community, without reopening old wounds πŸ’”. The city's trying to be considerate here, and I think that's super appreciated πŸ™.

I don't think this is going to be a good idea... I mean, releasing all that graphic footage is just gonna stir up more drama and cause unnecessary pain for people who are already grieving πŸ€•. I get what the mayor's trying to do - keep the public informed and show transparency - but can't we just leave some things to our imaginations? The fact that they had to heavily edit the video to avoid showing "graphic images" is kinda telling, though... like, what exactly are they hiding? πŸ€”

Ugh, these new vids from the Brown University shooting are so messy 🀯... I mean, I get that they're trying to keep it real and all that, but can't they just organize the clips into a timeline or something? I'm watching this footage and it's just a jumbled mess of sounds and images. They need to work on their editing skills πŸ“Ή... and maybe some color-coding for the different audio clips would be helpful too ⚫️. And why are there so many awkward pauses in the video? It feels like they're trying to convey chaos, but it just comes across as confusing πŸ˜•. Can't we get a more structured format or something?
