New York Archdiocese installs new Archbishop Ronald Hicks at St. Patrick’s Cathedral

In New York, a New Archbishop Rises to the Challenge

New York Archdiocese officials have announced that Ronald Hicks has been officially installed as the new leader of over 2 million Roman Catholics in and around the five boroughs. The 58-year-old Hicks took over from Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who stepped down at the age of 75, following a nearly two-decade tenure.

Hicks' focus is on re-engaging with members who have lost touch and attracting new people to the faith. He posed this question during a press conference: "How do we pass our faith on to the next generation? How do we be a Church that is relevant, living, and beautiful, sharing our faith together?" The pontifical appointment of Hicks was made in December by Pope Leo XIV, who hails from Chicago, Hicks' birthplace.

Hicks brings a unique perspective to his new role. Growing up 14 blocks away from Pope Leo's childhood home and having spent five years as a missionary in El Salvador have shaped him into the person he is today. He speaks fluent Spanish, which will help him connect with New York City's diverse Catholic population.

While Hicks is considered a centrist figure by some analysts, others worry about his ability to unite the Church in a polarized time. According to David Gibson, director of the Center on Religion and Culture at Fordham University, "I think Archbishop Hicks will try to really be a centrist figure, a unifier."

Cardinal Dolan has praised Hicks as "immensely qualified" for his new role. As he steps into his position, Hicks will lead the Church through Friday's formal installation mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Midtown.

It remains to be seen how Hicks will navigate the complexities of leading New York's Catholic community. However, with his background and his approach, there is hope that the Church can be a beacon of unity and relevance in a rapidly changing world.

🤔 so i think ronald hicks is gonna do a good job but idk how much he can really make a change... 2 decades under cardinal dolan was a long time, there's gotta be some issues that were already established before Hicks even got in 🙏

i like that he's fluent in spanish tho, will def help him connect with the diverse community here. but i'm also worried about how he'll handle the more... extreme views within the church 🤷‍♂️

anyway, only time will tell if Hicks can live up to his promises and make the church a place where ppl feel welcome and included. 💕

I'm not sure about this new Archbishop guy, he sounds like just another face in the Church 🤔. I mean, what's really going on here? He's talking about being "relevant" and all that jazz, but how does he plan to change things without, you know, actually changing them? It's all so... calculated 🤑. And don't even get me started on his background - a missionary in El Salvador, big whoop 🙄. I'm sure it's all very impressive to some, but what about the people who are really struggling to make ends meet or deal with everyday life? Does he have any answers for them? 🤷‍♂️

omg I'm more worried about the Archbishop's plan for school chaplains 🤔🏫, like will they be able to tackle teen drama & pressures while still spreading faith? 🙏♀️ I mean, it's great that he wants to engage with younger people but what if he doesn't speak their language? 💬 has anyone seen the latest school newsletter? 📰

idk about this guy... sounds like he's got some good ideas about re-engaging the youth, but what's to stop him from just being another middle-of-the-road type who doesn't stir things up? i mean, we need someone who's gonna challenge the status quo and bring some real change to the Church. 5 years in El Salvador as a missionary is cool, but can he really relate to the young people here? fluent Spanish is nice, but what about the rest of us who don't speak it fluently? still hoping he'll surprise us and do something amazing 💪

im curious about this new archbishop, ronald hicks. seems like he's got some big shoes to fill, especially with the church being so polarized atm 🤔. but hey, he's centrist and all that jazz, might just be able to bring people together. gotta give him props for speaking fluent spanish tho, that's not an easy feat 🌎. one thing though, has anyone thought about how the church is gonna tackle some of the bigger issues like climate change and economic inequality? those are some heavy topics that need some serious discussion 💸💚

man this is like so cool 🤩 archbishop hicks seems like he's gonna bring some fresh vibes to the catholic church in new york...I love how he's all about engaging with younger people and making the faith more relatable 😊 he's got that missionary background which is super inspiring, and fluent spanish skills? that's just fire 🔥 I'm a bit nervous though about him trying to unite the church when it feels like everyone's so divided these days 🤔 but hey at least he's willing to try, right? 💪

🤔 just heard about this new archbishop in NYC, thinks he's gonna shake things up by reaching out to young folks and making the church more relatable 📱. but it's always weird when these high-up clergy guys try to be all "cool" 🤷‍♂️. anyway, his background is pretty interesting - spent time as a missionary in El Salvador 🌴. hope he can make a difference 💖

I think its awesome that Ronald Hicks is takin on this role! He seems like a really down-to-earth guy who's all about connectin with people & buildin a community 🌎. I love how he's thinkin about the future of the Church & tryin to find ways to reach out to new folks. It's gonna be intresting to see how he navigates the whole unifying thing, but with his background in missiology & fluent Spanish, I got faith that he'll do a great job 🙏. Plus, its awesome that Pope Leo XIV made this choice – Chicago rep in NYC is a game changer 🤩. Im thinkin we might see some really positive changes under his leadership 💡.

I'm excited to see Archbishop Hicks take the reins in NYC 🙏🌆. He seems like a refreshingly down-to-earth guy who's got his finger on the pulse of what the church needs to stay relevant in this crazy world 🤯. Growing up 14 blocks from Pope Leo XIV's childhood home and having spent time as a missionary in El Salvador is some impressive background stuff, imo 👍. The fact that he speaks fluent Spanish will definitely help him connect with the city's diverse community 💬. Let's hope he can bring some much-needed unity to the church without alienating anyone 😊. One thing I'll be keeping an eye on is how he handles the polarized times we're living in 🤔...

🙏 I think it's awesome that Ronald Hicks has taken on this new role. He seems like someone who really cares about connecting with the younger generation and making the Church more inclusive 🌎. It's a tough job, but if he can bring people together and make them feel welcome, I'm sure the community will thrive 💕. I'd love to see how he navigates the challenges ahead, but from what I've read so far, I think he's got some great qualities that'll help him do it 🤞

OMG u gotta know about the new Archbishop in NYC, Ronald Hicks 🤯! He's like 58 & already takin on the challenge 😅. I'm low-key hyped 'bout his Spanish skills tho 💁‍♂️, it's gonna be lit having a Hispanic leader in the Church 👏. He's all about bringin' people together & makin' faith relevant for the new gen 🌈💖. I'm curious to see how he'll handle the polarized times tho 🤔. Can't wait for his installation mass at St. Pat's Cathedrals, gonna be a major moment 🔥! Fingers crossed this dude brings unity & love to the Church ❤️🙏

Ugh, I'm not sure about this new Archbishop guy... 🤔 I mean, he sounds pretty cool and all, but have you seen some of those old papal interviews? Like, Pope Leo XIV's answer to "What's the meaning of life?" was like " Um, well, it's kinda hard to say..." 🙃

But seriously, 14 blocks away from his childhood home and spent five years as a missionary in El Salvador is pretty sweet. I wish he'd still have that fire in him, you know? 💫 Lead the Church into a more inclusive, modern era... not just keep it stuck in the past like sometimes happens 🚮

Still, we gotta give him a chance. He's talking about making the faith relevant to the next gen, and I'm all for that! 🤝 But also gotta hope he doesn't get lost in the bureaucracy 😴. Fingers crossed for this new Archchurch! 💪

Just heard about this new Archbishop dude Ronald Hicks and I gotta say, I'm intrigued 🤔 He seems like he's gonna shake things up and bring some fresh energy to the Catholic community here in NYC. I mean, who doesn't want their faith to be relevant and beautiful, right? 💖 His background is pretty cool too - missionary in El Salvador and speaks fluent Spanish, that's awesome! 👍 I'm hoping he'll be able to unite the Church and bring people together, especially with all the polarizing stuff going on. Fingers crossed he can make it happen 🤞

I'm not sure if this new Archbishop is gonna shake things up but I do think it's cool he speaks fluent Spanish 🙌, that's like a big plus for NY City's diverse community. The way he talks about passing on the faith to the next gen is actually pretty inspiring 💡. I mean, someone's gotta try and bring those Catholics back together after all the drama 😅. Can't wait to see what kind of changes he brings to the Church, but at the same time, it'll be interesting to see how some people react 🤔. Maybe this guy can bring a little bit of that unity David Gibson is talking about 💖. Only time will tell!

🤗 omg i just got back from NYC last month and i was at this awesome church in Brooklyn where they had this huge festival for saints day lol anyway so i talked to this guy who told me he used to know archbishop hicks' dad in chicago like 30 yrs ago idk wut it is but apparently Hicks is super nice and speaks fluent spanish which is dope cuz my abuela loves that about him 🤗

🤔 I mean, who doesn't want a fresh face in the archbishop position? 🙃 58-year-old Ronald Hicks seems like a solid pick - no drama, no fuss. He's got experience, he's got faith, and he's fluent in Spanish... just what the Church needed: more Spanish speakers 💁‍♀️. On a serious note, it'll be interesting to see how he tackles the modern challenges of being a Catholic leader. Can't wait to see how this whole "being relevant" thing plays out 🕰️💖

idk why ppl r so hyped about this new archbishop i mean, he's just gonna make more rules n stuff like cardinal dolan 2 b honest, seems like they're all talk no action 2 me btw, how do u know if he's really gonna unite the church or just stir up drama? pope leo's appointment was a good one tho, at least he's not from england lol

🤔 just thinkin its cool that archbishop hicks is bringin some new energy to the catholic church, been missin dat vibe for years lol 💯 i mean we need someone who can unite the ppl and get us movin forward, not stuck in the past like cardinal dolan was 🕰️ 58 is old for a leader, maybe its time for a change but ill give archbishop hicks some props for tryna make it work 🔥
