NJ man convicted of drunk-driving murder in July 4th crash that killed 4 in NYC park

Conviction of NJ Man Who Killed Four on NYC's July 4th Celebrations

A New Jersey resident, Daniel Hyden, has been found guilty of murder and other charges for driving under the influence that fateful night in Corlears Hook Park, a Manhattan park where families were celebrating the nation's birthday. The devastating accident claimed the lives of four people: Lucille Pinkney, 59, her son Herman Pinkney, 38; Ana Morel, 43; and Emily Ruiz, 30.

Prosecutors presented evidence showing that Hyden, 46, was driving at an alarming speed – over 50 mph – without braking until just before impact. His reckless actions led to a fatal collision with innocent bystanders who were enjoying the holiday festivities. What's more, witnesses described how Hyden attempted to flee by reversing his truck but was thwarted when someone intervened and pulled out the key from the ignition.

Four of those injured in the incident suffered severe injuries that made it difficult for them to walk. The victims' families have been left to pick up the pieces and find solace in the conviction, which while brings no comfort to their loss, may provide some measure of closure.

It's striking that Hyden once worked at a substance abuse center and earned a degree in psychology and addiction counseling – a stark contrast to his current fate. The Manhattan District Attorney described the incident as "horrific" and called for justice.

Hyden is now scheduled to return to court on December 3rd to face sentencing, but his lawyer remains tight-lipped about their strategy.

OMG, can you even imagine driving that fast in a NYC park during the 4th of July celebrations?! 🤯😲 Like what was he thinking?! I mean, I know it's one of those crazy summer nights where everyone's out having fun, but come on! 😂 And to make matters worse, he tried to flee the scene? That's just insane! 💥 The fact that he used to work at a substance abuse center and had a degree in psychology is just wild. You'd think someone who's supposed to help people with addiction would be way more responsible with their own life 😂👎 Anyway, I hope he gets a decent sentence when he goes back to court on the 3rd 🤞

man... this is such a sad story 🤕. four innocent people lost their lives in the most important celebration of the year, and it's just... wow. Daniel Hyden's actions were completely unacceptable, driving at that speed without braking? what was he even thinking?! 🙄

and to think he used to work at a substance abuse center... that's like, taking all those people who are trying to overcome their struggles and putting them in harm's way. it's just so cruel.

i'm glad the justice system is working for these families, but sentencing is going to be hard to swallow, especially with him having a background in counseling 🤷‍♂️. anyway, i hope he gets what's coming to him on December 3rd... no more pain or suffering 💔

OMG 🤯 I'm literally still shaking thinking about this crazy guy who got caught driving drunk and killed FOUR people on the July 4th celebrations in NYC 🎇😱 Can you even imagine? He was speeding like a madman and didn't even try to stop... what if he had just pulled over or called for help?! 😩

But what's wild is that this guy used to work at a substance abuse center and even got a degree in psychology... how does someone go from helping others with addiction to killing innocent people on the road? 🤔 It's like, two completely different worlds right? 🌎 The families of the victims must be still trying to process everything...

I'm so glad justice was served, but I feel bad for the victim's families who are still dealing with this trauma... sentencing is coming up soon, I hope he gets a harsh sentence 🤞. This whole thing just gives me chills 😱

Omg I'm still in shock 🤯 about this accident... four people died?!?! It's just so sad 😔 and senseless. I don't get how someone can be driving that fast without brakes on a holiday where everyone's supposed to be having fun and enjoying themselves with their families 🎉. And the fact that he was working at a substance abuse center and had a degree in psychology... it just goes to show that you never really know what people are capable of, right? 🤷‍♀️ I mean, I'm glad justice has been served and the victims' families can finally get some closure, but man... this is just so tragic 😭. And now he's gotta face sentencing in December... poor guy, I hope he gets a fair shake 👀

man this case is still hard to wrap your head around the fact that someone who was supposed to be helping people with addiction issues turned out to have such a huge lapse in judgment it's like he was driving towards his own destruction and put innocent lives at risk 🤯

the severity of the charges is clear, but you can't help but wonder what led him down this path was he going through some personal struggles that day or did something snap inside him?

anyway, the verdict might bring some relief to the families who lost loved ones but it's also a harsh reminder of how quickly things can spiral out of control 🚨

🚗💀 this whole thing is just crazy, you know? some guy gets behind the wheel after a night of drinking and kills four people... it's like, what's going through your mind? 🤯 he had this degree in psychology too, must've been joking when he became a drunk driver. 😂 anyway, it's not about being funny or anything, but how do you go from helping others to doing something so destructive? and now he's facing sentencing... hopefully the judge gives him what's coming to him 💪

🚨 This case is just mind-blowing - I mean, can you even imagine someone who's supposed to help others with addiction issues being out there living a reckless life that causes the loss of four innocent lives?! 🤯 It's like, what happened to all those years of studying psychology and counseling? Did he just tune it out or did his personal demons take over?

And the fact that he was driving at an insane speed without braking is just, wow... That's some crazy stuff right there. I'm sure the witnesses who saw him try to flee will never forget that night. It's heartbreaking for the families of the victims and it's hard to imagine how they're coping with this.

It's great that justice has been served but, of course, nothing can bring back those four people. The sentencing date is looming, let's hope his lawyer has a solid strategy to make sure he doesn't get off lightly. 🚔

This guy gets 4 people dead on a holiday and no one's shocked? 🤷‍♂️ I mean what's the expectation for someone who's driving under the influence on 4th of July in Manhattan?! You're basically begging to hit some pedestrians. Hyden's got a degree in psychology, huh? Guess that didn't translate to common sense when it counted most. The fact that he tried to flee and was caught is just icing on the cake. He's gonna get a slap on the wrist and be out in no time, which is just not right.

😔 this guy's story is just so messed up... he used to work at a rehab center and was into psychology, can you believe that? it's like he had all the right tools to help people struggling with addiction, but instead he was driving around recklessly, killing innocent ppl on July 4th 🤦‍♂️. his attempt to flee just showed how cowardly he is... i mean, what's there to be proud of in trying to leave the scene after causing such destruction? anyway, sentencing is coming up and hopefully justice will be served 💔

OMG, can you even believe what this dude did?! 😱 50 mph in a NYC park? Like, that's just insane! 🚨 And to think he was working at a substance abuse center and studying psychology? 🤯 How do you go from helping people to killing innocent lives like that? 💔 I'm literally shook by the thought of those families having to deal with this trauma. The DA is right, it's horrific and justice needs to be served ASAP! ⏰ Hopefully he gets a fair sentence on Dec 3rd and can face the consequences of his actions. 🤞

omg what's up with this guy?? 🤯 how could he be so reckless and drunk and drive like that?! I mean, those ppl were just trying to celebrate the 4th of July and have fun... not get hurt 😭. And wow, the fact that he used to work at a substance abuse center is wild 🤔. I guess you never really know what's gonna happen with people in real life. The DA saying it was "horrific" makes sense tho, like, how could this even happen?! 🙅‍♂️ And poor families who lost ppl... 💔. I don't think anyone can explain why he did this, but maybe a long sentence will help others not make the same mistake? 🤞

man this guy's sentence is gonna be huge 🤯💥 can't believe he was driving so fast without brakes in a crowded park with families celebrating... how does one even do that?! 😱 the fact that he tried to flee and someone intervened to stop him is just crazy... hope his lawyer comes up with a good strategy or else he's looking at some serious time 🕰️

OMG, this is like a terrible dream come true 🤯! How could someone be so reckless & put lives at risk? 🚗💥 I mean, I get it that he was DUI and stuff, but driving that fast in a crowded park on the 4th of July?! 😱 That's just not cool. And what's even crazier is that he tried to flee after crashing into innocent people! 🚫😳 Like, what's next? He'll be out in the streets, serving his time, and we'll all have to live with the guilt of knowing he was behind it all... 😩 Anyway, I'm just glad that justice has been served (mostly) and the victims' families can finally find some peace. Fingers crossed for a fair sentencing on Dec 3rd! 🤞 #JusticeForTheVictims #DUIAwarenessMatters #SafeRoadsForAll

Man this is just so sad 🤕 Four innocent lives lost on a night that's supposed to be all about celebrating our nation's birthday... It's crazy that Daniel Hyden was driving at like 50 mph without braking and thought he could just "reverse out" of the situation? That's just irresponsible. I feel bad for his victims' families, they're still trying to pick up the pieces after this tragedy.

It's weird that you hear about people who are passionate about helping others in one field, but end up hurting others in a completely different way. It's like, where did it all go wrong? 🤔 I'm just glad the justice system is holding him accountable and his lawyer isn't giving us any hints about what to expect from the sentencing...

I mean, I'm just so disappointed in the guy... like, you're working with people struggling with addiction, helping them overcome it, and then... this? It's just crazy 😱. And on a holiday like July 4th, of all times! It's like, what were they thinking?! 🤯 The fact that he was driving so fast, trying to flee the scene... it's just horrific 💔. I know his lawyer is saying something about his past work and how he's supposed to be helping people, but at the end of the day, this guy's actions spoke way louder than any degree or job 🤦‍♂️. The sentence is gonna have to be serious, considering what happened... my only hope is that it brings some kind of justice for the families 💕.

🚗😱 Can't believe someone who's supposed to help others becomes a menace behind the wheel 🤦‍♂️. How could he be driving that fast without brakes? And attempting to flee after killing 4 people?! 😡 Justice will hopefully be served on Dec 3rd 🕰️

Oh man 🤯 that's so sad 😔...the guy who was driving under the influence was supposed to help people with addiction problems? 🙄 how can you do something so reckless and hurt innocent people on a night when they were just trying to celebrate 🎉 it's like he thought his life was more important than everyone else's 🤷‍♂️...the fact that he had a job at a substance abuse center and was supposed to help others is just crazy 😲

I'm still in shock about this one... 🤯 I mean, four people lost their lives on the 4th of July? It's just not right. And can you believe this guy was working at a substance abuse center and had a degree in psychology? Like, how did that even happen? 😩

And what really gets me is that he was driving like a maniac and thought he could just flee the scene. I mean, what's wrong with these people? Don't they know how their actions affect others? 🙄

I'm glad justice has been served and his family can finally start to heal. But sentencing in December is still months away... it feels like an eternity until this guy faces real consequences for his reckless behavior 💔
