Norwest Gallery of Art set to close with final exhibit, ‘Water’ - Detroit Metro Times

Detroit's beloved Norwest Gallery of Art is set to close its doors after eight years of showcasing the works of emerging and established artists. The gallery, owned by Asia Hamilton, a pioneering figure in the Detroit art scene, will hold its final exhibit, "Water," which features an impressive array of artworks that explore the themes of water as a symbol of life, transformation, and connection.

Hamilton's decision to close the gallery comes after years of financial struggles, which she has been facing despite the growing popularity of the space. The artist has expressed her gratitude to the community for its support, stating that it was the only reason she could continue to keep the gallery open. However, she emphasizes the need for artists and art institutions to be supported by the community, rather than just relying on individual efforts.

The "Water" exhibit is a fitting tribute to the spirit of the gallery, with artworks created by Hamilton and other notable artists that explore the complexities of water as a symbol of life, spirituality, and transformation. The exhibit features a range of mediums, including paintings, illustrations, photography, video, and sculptures.

One of the standout pieces in the exhibit is "Lusteration," a painting by Ijania Cortez that explores the theme of baptism and the transformative power of water. Another notable piece is Nawili's sculptural collage, which features cowrie shells as a symbol of Yoruba Orisha Yemoja, the motherly deity of the ocean.

The exhibit also includes a unique sonic installation created by Maro J. Kayira and Ethan Marshall Cohen, which uses submersible microphones to record the sound of melting ice. The installation changes in real-time as visitors interact with it, creating an immersive experience that explores the theme of water's interconnectedness with all life on Earth.

As Norwest Gallery prepares to close its doors, Asia Hamilton plans to continue her work through pop-up art installations and her Womxnhouse Detroit artist residency. She will also be hosting a summit at Art Basel Miami Beach for arts administrators in December.

The closure of Norwest Gallery is a significant loss for the Detroit art community, which has come to rely on the space as a hub for showcasing emerging and established artists. However, Hamilton's legacy as a pioneering figure in the Detroit art scene will continue to inspire future generations of artists and art enthusiasts alike.

OMG, this is like so sad 😔! I'm literally going to miss Norwest Gallery so much!! Asia Hamilton's been such an inspiration to me & I've always loved her artwork 🤩. But at the same time, I get why she had to close it down... the gallery was struggling financially & it's crazy how one thing can affect a whole community 🌎.

I love that they're still doing pop-up art installations & hosting that summit tho! Asia Hamilton is literally the ultimate female boss 💁‍♀️. It's so inspiring to see her just keep pushing forward despite all the challenges she faced. And I'm def gonna check out "Water" - I need to see those cowrie shells sculptures ASAP 🌊💫.

It's really sad that we're losing Norwest Gallery, but at least we know Asia Hamilton is still going to be doing amazing things in the art world 🎨💖. Let's keep supporting her & other artists like her! 💪

It was like my fave place to go for art inspiration and community vibes 😔 Asia Hamilton did an amazing job bringing art to Detroit and it's crazy that she had to close it down due to financial struggles. I think she made the right call though, by saying we need more community support for artists and art spaces 🤝 I loved their "Water" exhibit, especially the sonic installation - it was like nothing I've ever experienced before! 😲 It's a shame that Detroit is losing this amazing resource but I'm so excited to see what Asia Hamilton does next with her pop-up installations and Womxnhouse Detroit residency 💪

😐 another art gallery bites the dust 🤯 its not like detroit needs more galleries but seriously who is gonna miss norwest gallery? its been struggling for years 😒 asia hamiltons plan B aka pop-up installations might just save her from total obscurity 🙏 but for now its a sad day for art lovers in detroit 👎

Ugh, my heart is literally breaking right now 🤕💔 I'm still trying to process the fact that Norwest Gallery is closing its doors after eight incredible years! Asia Hamilton's passion and dedication to showcasing emerging and established artists have been a beacon of hope for our community, and it pains me to see it go.

I mean, think about all the amazing art we've seen come out of that space - "Water" is going to be an absolute masterpiece 🌊🎨. Ijania Cortez's "Lusteration" is already giving me chills 😱 and Nawili's sculptural collage is like a work of art that whispers sweet nothings to my soul 💖.

The thing that gets me most, though, is how we've taken Asia Hamilton for granted 🙅‍♀️. We've been so caught up in the fact that it was free (for the most part) and conveniently located that we didn't realize the financial struggles she was facing behind the scenes.

It's not just about the gallery itself - it's about the community that has grown around it 🌿. The artists, the art enthusiasts, the administrators... everyone has been touched by Norwest Gallery in some way.

I'm beyond sad to see this happen, but I'll be cheering on Asia Hamilton every step of the way 💪🏽. She's not going down without a fight - pop-up art installations, Womxnhouse Detroit artist residency, and a summit at Art Basel Miami Beach? Girl, you're still got this 🔥!

🌊 the art world loses a piece of its soul with the closure of norwest gallery... eight years is just a blink of an eye in this fast-paced life, but asia hamilton's impact will be felt for years to come 🙏. her dedication to showcasing emerging artists and creating a space for community engagement was truly admirable 💡. let's hope that her pop-up art installations and womxnhouse detroit residency will continue to inspire and nurture the next gen of artists 🎨💥

Man... I'm really gonna miss Norwest Gallery 😔. It feels like just yesterday it was opening its doors and bringing so much energy to the Detroit art scene. Asia Hamilton's commitment to showcasing emerging and established artists was something we didn't see often, you know? And now it's all coming to an end after eight years... that's crazy 🤯. I'm glad they're going out on a high note with this "Water" exhibit, though - the artwork looks incredible and really captures the essence of what the gallery stood for. It's just too bad we won't have a physical space to hang out and get inspired anymore 🌊. But Asia's plan to keep creating through pop-up installations and residencies is still something to look forward to! Fingers crossed she'll continue to make waves in the art world 👍.

But, on the other hand, I feel bad for all the artists who will be affected by the closure... they'll have to find new spaces to showcase their work 💔. And what about the community? I mean, what happened to all the hype around Norwest Gallery? It was always so cool to go there and see the latest works by emerging artists 🎨👍. Asia Hamilton's decision to close it down is really sad news... I guess she finally realized that art doesn't pay the bills 💸. On the bright side, her pop-up art installations are going to be super interesting to see 😊 and who knows maybe she'll even inspire some new art institutions in Detroit 🤞.

OMG, you guys! 🤯 I'm literally heartbroken when I heard that Norwest Gallery is closing its doors 😭. Eight years of amazing exhibits and supporting emerging artists? That's just too much 💔. Asia Hamilton's dedication to the community has been real 🔥, and it's disheartening to see her facing financial struggles 🤕.

But on a more positive note, "Water" exhibit is giving me ALL THE FEELS 💦! The way Ijania Cortez's "Lusteration" piece explores baptism and transformation is EVERYTHING 🙌. And Nawili's cowrie shell sculptural collage? Mind blown 🤯. It's a testament to the power of water as a symbol of life, spirituality, and connection.

Let's give it up for Asia Hamilton, though! 💪 Her legacy in the Detroit art scene will live on 🔥, inspiring future artists and art enthusiasts alike 🌟. And who knows? Maybe pop-up art installations and Womxnhouse Detroit artist residency will be her new jam 🎉. Thanks for the memories, Norwest Gallery 🙏 #RIPNorwestGallery #WaterExhibit #ArtMatters
