NYC to extend Madison Avenue bus lanes to speed up trips for nearly 100K riders

New York City is on track to make its bus system faster by extending dedicated bus lanes along Madison Avenue, a major artery in the heart of Manhattan.

Under the plan, double bus lanes will be extended from 42nd Street down to 23rd Street by year's end. This redesign aims to improve speed and reliability for approximately 92,000 daily riders on local and express routes that span all five boroughs. The move is expected to have a significant impact, with buses currently cruising at just 4.5 miles per hour - roughly half the citywide average of 8.1 miles per hour.

According to officials, Madison Avenue is one of the most congested bus corridors in the city, and its slow pace has become a major concern for commuters. "Madison Avenue is one of the most important bus corridors in the city, yet tens of thousands of riders are crawling along at walking speed," said Transportation Department Commissioner Mike Flynn.

The new design will dedicate two lanes to buses while maintaining one general traffic lane and an alternating travel/parking lane during rush hour. This layout is designed to better reflect how people actually move through the corridor, with 55% of travelers on this stretch relying on the bus.

While there have been some improvements in bus speeds within the congestion pricing zone below 60th Street, officials say the new lanes will take the momentum to the next level. The project was originally proposed for 2025 but was delayed during the final year of Mayor Eric Adams' administration due to a missed painting season.

Transportation advocates are hailing the Mamdani administration's decision to restart the project as a major victory. "Buses are the silent backbone of this city," said Betsy Plum, executive director of Riders Alliance. "We are excited to see faster buses that give riders back their time." The design on nearby Fifth Avenue has shown similar results, with local bus speeds increasing by up to 12% and express buses reaching speeds of up to 20%.

The impact of the redesign will be felt across Manhattan, as commuters look forward to a faster, more reliable bus system.

I'm literally over here so hyped about this news 🀩🚌! Finally, someone is listening to the people and giving us some real change on our beloved buses! I mean, 4.5 miles per hour is just laughable, right? It's like they're asking us to crawl along with them or something πŸ˜‚. And don't even get me started on how frustrating it is during rush hour when you're literally stuck in traffic for hours... it's a nightmare!

But this new design on Madison Avenue is gonna be a game-changer! I mean, two lanes just for buses? That's like, bus heaven 🌳! And can we talk about the stats? 55% of travelers relying on the bus? That's like, proof that our city needs to start prioritizing public transportation already πŸ’‘. I'm not surprised that the Riders Alliance is hailing this as a major victory... they've been fighting for this forever!

And let's be real, folks... this isn't just about us commuters, it's about making our entire city more livable. When buses run on time and efficiently, it makes everything else better too 🀝. It's like, have you ever tried to navigate the city without a reliable bus system? Forget about it! It's like trying to find your way through a maze... frustrating 😩.

So yeah... I'm all about this new design πŸ’–. Let's make our buses faster and more reliable once and for all!

omg u guys this is like literally amazing news!! 🚨🚌 they're finally doing something about madison ave being a total nightmare for buses πŸ™„ i mean 4.5 miles per hour is like wth? that's not even jogging speed πŸ˜‚ anyway the plan to extend dedicated bus lanes from 42nd to 23rd street by end of the year sounds like a total game changer πŸ’₯ and it's not just about getting people out of traffic but also saving them time πŸ•°οΈ i feel like we need more stuff like this in our city

πŸš—πŸ’¨ You know what's crazy? People always think that having a crowded bus is a bad thing... but what if it's just a sign that we need better infrastructure? 🀯 Like, our current system is moving at like 4.5 miles per hour! That's slower than most walking pace. πŸ˜‚ It's all about perspective, right? Instead of focusing on how slow the bus is, let's focus on making it move faster and more efficiently.

And I love what Transportation Department Commissioner Mike Flynn said - Madison Avenue is one of the most important bus corridors in the city... but we're still treating it like a walking path. πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ It's time to rethink our approach and prioritize our transportation systems.

This redesign on Madison Avenue is huge, not just for the 92,000 daily riders, but also for the entire city. Imagine having more time in your day because of a faster bus system... that's what I call freedom! πŸ’ͺ

🚌 this is some good news for NYC commuters, finally something being done about those super slow buses on Madison Ave πŸ™„, 4.5 mph is basically walking speed, and with the new design it's going to be a game changer, especially with all those people relying on the bus 🀯, i mean what's the point of having dedicated lanes if you're just gonna sit there for hours? πŸ’¨ this could really improve the whole transportation system in NYC, we should see some real benefits from this redesign πŸ”₯

im lovin this new plan for madison avenue πŸš‚πŸ’¨ it's about time those buses got some love! i mean, who wants to ride on a bus that's slower than walkin' speed? 😴 4.5 miles per hour is like, what even is that? 🀯 at least they're makin progress now tho and it's gonna make a huge diff for all those commuters πŸ™Œ the fact that they're dedicatin two lanes just to buses is pure genius πŸ€“ let's hope this sets the bar high for other cities too! πŸ’ͺ

🚨 this is so cool... think about it, our daily commutes are basically just sitting in traffic πŸš—πŸ’¨. and for what? just to get from point A to point B. but what's the point of getting there if we're not even moving πŸ€”? it's like life, you know? we're all just trying to get somewhere, but what do we do when we get there? is it really that much better? maybe this new bus system will give people a chance to reflect on that πŸŒ†. and I love how transportation advocates are saying buses are the 'silent backbone' of the city... I think that's deep πŸ’•. maybe our public transportation systems can be like life itself - quiet, but moving forward all the time πŸš‚πŸ’¨

omg u guys i'm telling u this isnt about improvin the bus system its about gettin rid of all those pesky cyclists on Madison Ave πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈπŸš¨ theyre always causin a scene and delayin the buses now thats gonna be solved with double bus lanes but think bout it what if its not just for the buses but also 4 them fancy electric cars and delivery vans that are zoomin down the street πŸš—πŸ’¨ its all part of their plan to turn Manhattan into a private car zone

πŸš‚ The recent announcement to extend dedicated bus lanes along Madison Avenue is a significant step towards improving New York City's notoriously congested transportation infrastructure πŸ’‘. By dedicating double bus lanes and maintaining an alternating travel/parking lane, the proposed design should lead to a substantial increase in bus speeds, with some estimates suggesting up to 10 miles per hour faster than current rates πŸ“Š. This is particularly welcome news for commuters who rely on buses as their primary mode of transportation πŸ‘₯. The fact that nearly 60% of travelers on this stretch exclusively use the bus underscores the need for efficient and reliable public transit systems πŸ’». Overall, the Mamdani administration's decision to restart the project is a testament to their commitment to improving the quality of life for all New Yorkers πŸŒ†.

omg cant believe its actually happening πŸšπŸ’¨ i mean like i get it madison ave is super congested and all but like whats next gonna happen if they speed up buses everywhere?? πŸ˜‚ will people even be able to park on the side streets? idk man but im down for faster buses lol

πŸšŒπŸ’¨ omg u guys this is huge news for nyc bus riders!!! πŸš€ they're finally gonna make madison ave bus lanes way faster πŸ’₯ and it's like 92k ppl daily will benefit from this 😍 cant imagine cruisin down that street at 4.5mph lol πŸ˜‚πŸš« the citywide avg is already 8.1mph so this is a major improvement πŸŽ‰ i mean who doesn't love gettin to work or school on time on the bus tho? ⏰πŸ’ͺ and btw the design makes sense too, like, 55% of people use the bus on that stretch so it's all about reflectin reality πŸŒπŸ‘

πŸšŒπŸš— man it's crazy how far NYC has come with its bus system. I remember back in the day when you could actually get from the Upper East Side to Times Square without losing an hour... nowadays it feels like you're stuck in traffic even on the dedicated bus lanes πŸ™„. but hey, extending those lanes along Madison Ave is a step in the right direction... 4.5 miles per hour? what's that supposed to be? walking speed or something?

anywayz, I'm stoked for commuters who have to deal with this every day. it's gonna be a game changer when you can actually get somewhere on time πŸ•°οΈ. and 92k daily riders is no joke... those people deserve faster buses, too! the fact that they're dedicating two lanes just to buses shows that someone's listening πŸ‘‚. now we just gotta hope they stick with it and don't let the momentum die out πŸ’ͺ

πŸšŒπŸš— I'm so glad they're finally doing something about Madison Ave! I've been stuck in traffic on that thing for ages, and it's literally the worst 😩. I feel for all those poor parents trying to get their kids to school on time with buses crawling along at walking speed πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. It's crazy how much of a difference this new design is gonna make - 4.5 miles per hour?!?! That's like, what even is that πŸ˜‚? I just wanna be able to drop off my kiddo and get on with my day without wasting an hour stuck in traffic πŸ•’οΈ. And the fact that they're dedicating two lanes to buses while still keeping some general traffic lane is a win-win in my book πŸŽ‰. Can't wait to see how this all shakes out! 😊

OMG u guys! 🚨 I'm literally so stoked about this news!!! NYC is finally taking steps to make its bus system FASTER! πŸš— Extending dedicated bus lanes along Madison Avenue is a genius idea πŸ€“ and I can already imagine the rush hour chaos becoming a thing of the past πŸ˜…. With 92k daily riders getting a speed boost, it's about time our city leaders stepped up their game πŸ’ͺ. The numbers are already impressive with speeds reaching up to 8.1mph on average... now that's what I call progress πŸš€! Can't wait to see this project come to life and make travel in Manhattan more efficient πŸ•’οΈ.

omg u guys idk if they're kidding or not but extending dedicated bus lanes on madison ave is like, a no brainer πŸ™„. i mean 4.5 miles per hour is literally walking speed. and dont even get me started on how frustrating it must be for commuters who rely on the bus daily. i'm all for faster buses lol. its not like they're gonna make a huge difference in traffic overall or anything, but at least it's something πŸš‚πŸ’¨. the fact that its been delayed is wild tho... i guess you can't rush good things?

OMG 🚨🚌 I'm literally so stoked about this news! I mean, think about it, we're talking about improving the bus system in NYC - one of the most populous cities in the world 😲 And it's not just about getting people from point A to point B, but also about reducing stress and anxiety for commuters πŸ™. With buses cruising at 4.5 miles per hour, that's like driving in slow motion 🚫! But with this new design, they're talking up to 8.1 miles per hour - that's like being able to enjoy a coffee while you ride 🍡.

And let's be real, who doesn't love the idea of having more time back in their day? πŸ•’ I know I do! As someone who's all about mindfulness and self-care, this is like a breath of fresh air 😌. Plus, it's not just about the speed - it's also about making public transportation more accessible and user-friendly for everyone 🌟. So, yay for Madison Avenue and the Mamdani administration for giving us faster buses! πŸ’¨

πŸ’‘ this is about time, NYC's bus system has been a joke for ages πŸ˜‚. I'm glad they're finally making some progress. 92k daily riders is a decent number, but still, it's a shame people have to crawl along at walking speed on Madison Ave πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ. I mean, who thought that was a good idea? πŸ€”. The fact that only 55% of travelers rely on the bus makes sense, though - most people in Manhattan are just trying to get from point A to point B ASAP ⏱️.
