NYC voters reject moving elections to presidential election years

NYC Voters Reject Shift to Presidential Election Years for Local Elections

In a decisive defeat, New York City voters have rejected a proposed ballot measure that aimed to move local elections to presidential election years. The outcome marks a setback for efforts to boost voter turnout in city elections, with the proponent's executive director expressing "deep disappointment" at the result.

The proposal had been touted as an opportunity to address persistent low voter turnout in city elections, but its chances were ultimately derailed by the strong showing of over 2 million voters who cast ballots in this year's mayoral election - a number that far exceeded projections and highlighted the existing momentum for civic engagement. Despite the initial enthusiasm surrounding the measure, it appears that the high turnout in this past November's contest has rendered the shift unnecessary.

While proponents had argued that combining local elections with presidential elections could lead to increased voter participation, opposition voices were louder, warning that such a move risked overshadowing important local issues and potentially resulting in uninformed voting. Critics like Errol Louis, an anchor for NY1's Inside City Hall, successfully countered this argument, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that voters are informed about local issues before making their choices.

The proposal now faces an uncertain future as state lawmakers would need to adopt a state constitutional amendment, which must pass two consecutive legislative sessions before being put to voters. It remains to be seen whether the push for voter turnout will continue in other forms or if the momentum generated by this year's strong showing will prove sufficient on its own.

🤔 I'm kinda surprised they didn't make it happen, you know? I mean, a higher turnout is always a good thing, but at the same time, I can see why some people would be worried about local issues getting lost in the shuffle. I've seen friends get super engaged when there's a big presidential election coming up, and then they kinda tune out for the smaller stuff. So it's not like they were gonna magically make everyone more informed or anything... but still, it was worth a shot, right? 😐

I'm kinda surprised that NYC voters rejected the proposal to move local elections to presidential election years... 🤔 I mean, it does make sense to boost voter turnout, but at the same time, don't you think that combining them could get a bit confusing for people? Like, they'd have to keep track of two different sets of candidates and issues on the same ballot... 🤯 Still, I guess that's a good point about not overshadowing local issues - we need more info on what our city leaders are planning before we vote, right? 👍 What do you guys think would be a better way to increase voter turnout in NYC? Should they just keep doing what they're doing now or try something new? 🤔

omg can u believe the results? 2 million ppl voted in that mayoral election and it was a huge deal! now they wanna change everything? idk about this shift to pres election years thing...seems like a big risk to me 🤔. if they wanna boost voter turnout, why dont they just make elections more fun and engaging instead of messing with the whole voting schedule? btw, i heard errol louis speakin' out against it and he had some solid points 🗣️

ugh, can't believe they didn't vote for it 🤦‍♂️ i mean, 2 million people showed up to mayoral elections and now they're gonna stop that momentum? it seems like just a bunch of bureaucracy trying to mess with the way we participate in our democracy... meanwhile, state lawmakers are all like "oh well, we'll figure it out" 🙄 not sure what's more frustrating - that the proposal didn't pass or that the explanation for its failure is gonna be a convoluted mess of state constitutional amendments 🤯

I'm LIKE, totally bummed out about this news 🤕!!! I mean, who doesn't want to see more people voting in city elections? It just makes sense that we need to encourage more people to get out and participate. The fact that over 2 million voters showed up for the mayoral election is amazing, and it's clear that there's already a lot of momentum for civic engagement. I'm not sure what the future holds, but I hope that this setback doesn't derail the effort to boost voter turnout in other ways. Maybe they can just focus on making local elections more engaging and fun, like having some awesome candidates or events? That would definitely get people excited! 🎉

Ugh, I'm so glad NYC voters said no to that plan 🙅‍♀️! Local elections are super important and we can't just combine them with presidential ones. What would be the point of voting for who's gonna fix your potholes or lead your local school district if everyone's too busy voting for the President? 🤔 I think critics like Errol Louis were totally right to say that informed voters are key and that's exactly what happened in this past November's election – people came out in droves because they cared about their city! 💪 So, let's just focus on getting more people engaged in local politics rather than trying to mess with the system 🙏.

idk why ppl didn't wanna combine local & pres elections tho 🤷‍♂️ it seems like a good way to boost voter turnout. and now all that momentum is just... wasted 💔 maybe they should've studied other cities' models instead of trying 2 do it on the fly 😬 but i guess we'll have to wait n see how this whole thing plays out 🤞
