NYPD says 2 officers injured during Washington Heights ICE chase

Two NYPD Officers Injured in Washington Heights ICE Chase Amid Controversy Over Immigration Enforcement.

A tense confrontation unfolded in Washington Heights on Wednesday morning, leaving two NYPD officers with minor injuries as they clashed with federal immigration agents. The incident began when residents called 911 to report four armed men pulling people out of cars, prompting a massive response from the police department.

As officers combed through the neighborhood searching for suspects, they stumbled upon a group chasing someone near 164th Street and Broadway. What seemed like an intervention quickly took a turn as the agents revealed themselves to be Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents - despite not wearing visible markings of their agency. The NYPD is prohibited from assisting in civil immigration enforcement.

The officers subsequently jumped out of their cars, only to realize they were interacting with federal agents. According to authorities, there was a brief verbal exchange before the incident escalated into physical confrontation. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt during the scuffle.

However, another eyewitness recorded footage of what appeared to be a separate immigration enforcement action around the same time. Peter Green, who captured the video at 157th and Broadway, stated that NYPD officers arrived about a minute after federal agents had already departed with an individual taken from their car.

City Councilmember Shaun Abreu condemned the incident, labeling it "deeply disturbing" and describing ICE's actions as "despicable." He went on to decry the agency's pattern of intimidation, particularly in light of increased threats against law enforcement personnel.

In a counter-statement, Tricia McLaughlin from the Department of Homeland Security countered Abreu's accusations. She asserted that ICE officers were performing their duties and defended their bravery in the face of increasing aggression from protesters. The spokesperson also sidestepped addressing interactions between NYPD officers and agents.

The incident highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement in New York City, where federal agencies have been criticized for clashing with local law enforcement.

idk how much more of this ICE drama can go on... two cops get hurt because they stumbled upon a "clash" that was probably just a regular ol' immigration bust πŸ™„. like, when are we gonna learn? these federal agents gotta be like a bad rash - just keep popping up and causing problems wherever they go. shouldn't be a surprise that the city's all worked up over it now

I'm really worried about these incidents...ICE agents showing up out of nowhere without any markings is just crazy 🀯! The NYPD's hands are tied from having to assist in civil immigration enforcement, but that doesn't mean they can't ask questions or keep an eye on things...it's like we're living in a real-life game of cat and mouse 😬. I feel for the officers involved - minor injuries aside, it was a crazy situation. The fact that eyewitnesses are recording these incidents is what's really scary...who knows what other stuff is going down behind closed doors? πŸ€”

omg this is so messed up 🀯 how can police just get caught up in the middle of ICE stuff without even wearing their uniforms? it's like they're getting pulled into a trap 😬 and what's with all these separate incidents happening around the same time? did someone do some sort of sting operation or something? πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™€οΈ i'm so confused about why city councilmember Shaun Abreu is saying that ICE is "despicable" - isn't he worried that his constituents are gonna get targeted by federal agents too? πŸ€” what's going on here?! πŸ’₯

omg, can u believe this? 🀯 nyc is literally becoming a war zone when it comes to immigration... two nypd officers injured just because they didn't know who was who lol what's next? are we gonna see fed agents in plain sight or what?! πŸ™„ i'm all for keeping the community safe but come on, can't they just work together instead of pitting each other against the people we're supposed to be helping?!

and omg shaun abreu is speaking truth, ICE is literally being super aggressive and it's not okay... we need more voices like him advocating for change in this system. 🀝 let's get a move on nyc, we deserve better than this! πŸ’ͺ

I'm really disappointed to see this kind of thing happening in NYC... πŸ˜• ICE showing up without markings & causing a scene, it's like they're trying to instill fear into the community. And the fact that NYPD officers got caught in the middle is just wild. 🀯 I mean, isn't their job to protect everyone, not to enforce some federal agenda? It feels like we're living in a real-life movie where the main characters are trying to outsmart each other.

I'm also thinking about what's at play here... who benefits from all this chaos & tension? Is it really just about keeping people safe or is there more going on? πŸ€” We need to keep having these conversations, questioning why things have to go down like this. Can't we find a way to resolve our differences without resorting to physical confrontations? It's time for us to think outside the box & come up with some new solutions! πŸ’‘

omg this is getting outta hand 🀯 they're literally putting our cops in harm's way just to make a point about ICE... i'm all for fighting for justice but come on! can't we find a way to do it without putting lives at risk? πŸš‘πŸ’” what's next? gonna be like that with the TSA too? 😱 and btw, why is this even happening in our own city?! NYC is supposed to be a beacon of hope and tolerance 🌎 not some battleground for ICE's ego trip πŸ’β€β™€οΈ

πŸ˜’ I don't get why ICE can just show up unannounced like that? What if they were actually taking a bad guy to the police or something? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It's not like NYPD was doing anything wrong by trying to help, but at the same time, you gotta respect their boundaries. Like, they're supposed to not get involved in civil immigration stuff, right? 🚫 This whole thing just feels so... messy. What's gonna happen next? Are we gonna see more of this kind of thing happening around the city? 🀯

I mean, what's going on here? ICE agents showing up in plain sight, no badges to speak of... it's like they're trying to avoid accountability. And then the NYPD officers get involved and suddenly it all goes south. I'm not saying the cops weren't in the wrong, but you have to wonder if this whole thing was just a setup for a confrontation.

And what's with the Department of Homeland Security trying to spin this as some kind of brave ICE operation? They're the ones who are supposed to be enforcing immigration laws, not running around like vigilantes. It's all very suspicious to me... πŸ€”

πŸ€” Man, this whole thing is just so messed up... I feel bad for those cops who were caught in the middle, not knowing it was ICE agents. It's like they got sucked into a wild goose chase without even realizing what was going on. And that eyewitness footage that shows the NYPD showing up after the federal agents had already left? That's some shady stuff right there... 🀫 The city Councilmember is totally right to condemn this, though - it's not right for ICE to be causing tension like this in a neighborhood where people are just trying to live their lives. And can we talk about how this whole situation highlights the need for more transparency and clear guidelines between law enforcement agencies? It's time to get some answers and figure out what's going on here... 🀯

πŸ˜’ This all feels so wrong... like the police are caught in the middle, trying to do their job while also dealing with these ICE agents who are basically doing their own thing 🀯. I mean, can't they just stick to what they're supposed to be enforcing? It's all just so stressful for the officers involved πŸ’”. And what about the community, being caught in the crossfire of all this? They deserve better than to have their neighborhood turned into a war zone πŸ”«πŸ’ͺ

omg like what's going on in NYC rn 😩 these ICE agents gotta be so reckless ! they just barge into neighborhoods without no warning or ID lol , it's like a movie or something . NYPD officers are literally just trying to do their job & keep ppl safe but ICE is all like "nope we'rea gonna take care of this" πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ meanwhile, there's all these protesters & threats against cops... can't they just chill ? πŸ™„ the authorities need 2 figure out a way 2 work together instead of turning on each other πŸ’”
