NYPD shoots and injures man with knife inside Queens home, officials say

Police in Queens are dealing with another volatile situation after they shot and injured a 22-year-old man wielding a kitchen knife inside his home, officials said.

According to the authorities, an officer was dispatched to Parsons Boulevard near 85th Avenue in Briarwood following a frantic call from a family member who reported a man throwing glass and causing a commotion. Upon arrival, police entered the residence where they found the suspect, but not before he retrieved a large knife and began advancing towards them.

According to Assistant Chief Christopher McIntosh of Queens Borough South command, officers repeatedly ordered the man to drop the knife in an attempt to de-escalate the situation, but he continued to advance on them. Police then retreated from the area and attempted to isolate him by shutting a glass door leading to the living room, where he was still armed with the knife.

When the suspect pushed through the door, one officer opened fire, striking him in the body. He was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where he underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition as of Monday afternoon.

The NYPD confirmed that the entire encounter was recorded on their body-worn cameras, which are now being reviewed by the department's Force Investigation Division. The man involved has not yet been publicly identified, although authorities did note that he had a history of mental illness.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani offered little more information as officials assessed the situation and expressed their commitment to keeping New Yorkers informed as they learn more about the incident.

The police asked residents to avoid the area due to potential traffic delays.

๐Ÿค” This whole thing seems like a classic case of miscommunication ๐Ÿ“ž. I mean, what's the protocol here? You get a call that someone's being aggressive, and you rush in without even knowing why or what's going on? It's not exactly de-escalation techniques if you're just gonna shoot someone trying to push through a door ๐Ÿšช.

And don't even get me started on the body cam footage... I hope it shows everything that went down, because this whole thing smells like a bit of a mess ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. You'd think that with all these high-tech cameras and whatnot, we could figure out how to avoid situations like this in the first place ๐Ÿ”.

I'm not saying the officer didn't have a right to defend themselves, but... ๐Ÿค”... did they really need to shoot? Couldn't they've just tried talking him down or something?

this is just another example of how the system is rigged against us ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ... I mean, can you believe it? a guy with a history of mental illness gets shot by cops for having a kitchen knife in his own home?! ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ it's like they're trying to cover something up. and what really gets me is that the officer who opened fire wasn't even the first one to try and de-escalate the situation... sounds like there was some coordination going on here... or maybe it's just a coincidence? ๐Ÿค‘ anyway, I'm not buying it...

man this is crazy ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’” another innocent life lost to a misunderstanding. it's so sad when things escalate like that and people lose their cool, you know? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ I'm just worried about the young guy involved, mental health matters are real and we gotta be more supportive ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’–. body-worn cameras are great but can't replace human judgment, it's all about finding that balance ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ. what's the lesson here? stay calm, communicate, and de-escalate when possible ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ™. hope this guy recovers ๐Ÿคž๐ŸŒŸ

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this... like, what's going on with these situations? ๐Ÿค” First it's a shooting in Harlem and now this one in Queens? It feels like we're living in some sort of alternate reality where police can't just diffuse tense situations without someone getting hurt. I mean, I'm all for officers being safe too, but is there really no other way to resolve these things? The fact that they had to resort to shooting him just makes me sad ๐Ÿ˜”. And what's with the body cams? Can't we learn from this and improve our response strategies or something?

omg, dis is soooo sad ๐Ÿค• ...i cant even imagine bein in that mans shoes... hes just tryna have a quiet moment at home and BAM! cops show up wiv guns drawn lol no de-escalation tactics r needed 2 b used in dis situation 1 officer shot & injured him, thats crazy ๐Ÿšจ. the fact dat he had histiry of mental illness dont make it any better tho ๐Ÿ˜” ...mayor zohran mamdani seems kinda vague about everythin... when wer gonna get da truth?? ๐Ÿค”

Ugh, can you believe this guy just started throwing glass everywhere ๐Ÿคฏ and then pulls out a knife? I mean, I get that he was having a bad day or whatever, but does that give him the right to be violent towards others? ๐Ÿค” It's always so hard to know what to do when someone is in crisis mode... like, you wanna help them, but you also don't wanna put yourself in harm's way ๐Ÿšจ. I'm just glad that officer was able to de-escalate the situation (kind of) by retreating and isolating him. And yeah, body-worn cameras are a great idea - it'll be interesting to see what they show ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. Anyway, hope the guy is okay after his surgery... but still, can we all just try to be more chill with each other when things get tough? ๐Ÿค—

omg what is wrong with these guys?? ๐Ÿคฏ the fact that he's armed with a knife and still pushing against the cops is crazy enough, but then they shoot him?!? like shouldn't de-escalation tactics work or something? ๐Ÿ˜” the guy has mental health issues, maybe he just needs help not bullets ๐ŸŽฏ anyone think this is an overreaction by the police? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿค” I think it's crazy how we're still debating whether cops can actually defuse situations like this with just verbal warnings ๐Ÿšซ they've clearly got some real experience under their belts - who else is gonna show up at your doorstep with a knife, right? ๐Ÿ˜‚ The fact that the whole thing was recorded on body cams should be comforting for everyone involved, but I'm guessing it's gonna make for some pretty interesting reviews in the coming days ๐Ÿ“š

๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ I'm really worried about situations like this where cops have to shoot people who are armed and acting crazy ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. Can't we just talk it out? ๐Ÿค” I know it's hard when you're in a situation like that, but hitting someone with a gun is never the answer ๐Ÿ’”. We should be supporting each other, not trying to hurt each other. It's just so sad that this young guy ended up getting shot and now he's gonna have to deal with all this trauma ๐Ÿค•. And what's even more frustrating is that we don't know all the details of what happened ๐Ÿ˜’. Can't we just get a clear picture of what went down before we start making assumptions? ๐Ÿค” It's just so important to try and understand each other, you know? ๐Ÿ’–

OMG, can you even believe this?? ๐Ÿคฏ A 22-yr-old dude with a kitchen knife in his own home, causing a huge scene... I mean, what's going on here?! ๐Ÿ˜ฉ It's crazy that he kept advancing on the cops and they had to shoot him. That must've been super scary for everyone involved.

And, ugh, poor guy got injured! ๐Ÿค• Hopefully, he recovers soon. You feel for his family too, dealing with all this drama. Mental health issues are getting way more attention now, which is good, but it's also super sad that we're seeing this stuff happening in real life.

Anyway, the NYPD being all transparent about this, reviewing the body-cam footage... that's a good step forward! ๐Ÿ“น Fingers crossed they get to the bottom of what happened. And, omigosh, the mayor is just keeping it vague... like, hello, we need more info here! ๐Ÿค”
