One in four UK teenagers in care have attempted to end their lives, study says

UK Teenagers in Foster Care at Four Times Greater Risk of Suicide

A shocking new study has revealed that one in four teenagers in foster care have attempted to end their lives, with those without any experience of being in care facing a risk of only 1 in 14. The landmark research, conducted by academics from the University of London and funded by the Nuffield Foundation, analyzed data from over 19,000 people born between 2000 and 2002.

The study found that nearly 26% of 17-year-olds who have lived in foster or residential care had attempted to end their lives, compared to just 7% of those without any care experience. The researchers also discovered that teenagers with foster care experience were more likely to experience multiple negative mental health outcomes, including self-harm and high levels of depression.

The alarming findings have been described as a "national emergency" by the director of the Nuffield Family Justice Observatory, who calls for increased support for care-experienced young people. The study's lead author notes that the difficulties faced by teenagers with care experience are not inevitable and can be overcome with intensive support.

In addition to higher rates of suicidal ideation, teenagers in foster care were also found to be more likely to have had sex at an early age and to have experienced underage pregnancy. The researchers argue that a family-focused approach is needed to provide ongoing support throughout a young person's life course.

The government has pledged to take action to address the high rate of harm faced by care-experienced young people, with plans to improve access to mental health support earlier in their lives.

I'M SO SAD TO HEAR ABOUT THESE TEENAGERS WHO ARE GOING THROUGH THIS!!! IT'S JUST NOT RIGHT THAT THEY'RE FACEING SUCH HIGH RISKS OF SUICIDE AND OTHER NEGATIVE MENTAL HEALTH OUTCOMES! 🤕💔 WE NEED TO DO MORE TO SUPPORT THESE KIDS AND PROVIDE THEM WITH THE RESOURCES AND SUPPORT THEY NEED TO THRIVE!

I THINK THIS RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS THE NEED FOR US TO RETHINK OUR SYSTEMS AND MAKE SURE THAT CARE-EXPERIENCED YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE ACCESS TO THE BEST POSSIBLE SUPPORT AND CARE. WE CAN'T JUST LEAVE THEM TO STRUGGLE ON THEIR OWN - THEY NEED OUR HELP AND PROTECTION! 🤝🌟

omg, this is just devastating 🤯 i mean, can u believe 1 in 4 teenagers in foster care have tried to end their lives? that's like, a whole lotta pain and suffering 💔 it makes me wanna cry just thinking about all the kids out there who are struggling. i think its so important that we raise awareness about this issue and support our care-experienced youth in any way we can 🤗 and yeah, i totally agree with the family-focused approach - sometimes all a kid needs is someone to talk to and feel supported ❤️ gotta hope the gov takes their words serious and makes some real change ASAP 🕰️

I don’t usually comment but... this news is really heartbreaking 😔. I can only imagine how tough it must be for these kids who've already been through so much and then have the added pressure of dealing with suicidal thoughts. It's like, they're not even teenagers yet, they should be enjoying their youth, not worrying about ending their lives.

And what really gets me is that the study found they didn't need to go through all this if they had just a bit more support from their families or society. Like, can't we do better than this? It's like we're failing them as humans 🤕. I don't know what kind of solutions will work but it's clear we need to step up our game and provide these kids with the care and resources they deserve 💪.

I'm glad the government is taking notice, at least 🙏. But I wish they would take more action sooner rather than later. These kids are counting on us to make a difference 💕.

man... this just breaks my heart 🤕 thinking about all those teens in foster care feeling so alone and hopeless 😔 it's like, we're supposed to be a society that looks out for each other, but what are we doing to help these kids who need it most? 🤷‍♂️ they're already navigating some crazy stuff, going into care or residential care at a young age... can you even imagine? 💔 it's like, they don't get the stability and love that all kids deserve. and then to have this added stress of suicidal thoughts and mental health issues on top of everything else... no wonder, 1 in 4 of them are trying to end their lives 🚨

and what really gets me is that these kids are at four times greater risk... four! 🤯 that's just staggering. it's like, we're not taking this seriously enough. we need to be doing more to support these young people, to provide them with the resources and care they need to thrive. 💪 not just talk about it or make promises, but actually do something concrete to help them.

it's a national emergency, yeah... but what's going to happen? is anyone going to take action? 🤔 are we just going to sit back and let these kids suffer? no way, man... we can't let that happen.

Man, this study is like, totally heartbreaking 🤕. I mean, 1 in 4 teens in foster care have tried to end their lives? That's just not right. It's like, we're supposed to be a society that looks out for each other, you know? And to think that some of these kids are already facing so much trauma and neglect, it's just devastating.

I feel like the government is finally starting to listen, though 🙏. The plans to improve mental health support earlier on are a good start. We need more than just a band-aid solution, though. We need systemic changes that address the root causes of this issue. It's not just about throwing money at it or giving some teens access to therapy; we need to be thinking about how we can fundamentally change the way we support families and prevent kids from going into care in the first place.

And it's not just about the kids, either. We need to think about our entire society here. How are we failing these kids? What kind of messages are we sending them when they're growing up? We need to have some real conversations about this, you know?

this is just heartbreaking... 1/4 of teens in foster care have tried to kill themselves? that's like, insane 🤯 and it's not even a shocker, we all knew something was messed up about the system. i mean, who wouldn't be traumatized by being taken away from their family at such a young age? it's time for us to take action and make sure these kids get the support they need... like, now 🕰️. we need more than just promises from the government, we need real change. and i think a family-focused approach would be a great start 🤝.

😱 this is just heartbreaking... i mean 1 in 4 teens in foster care trying to kill themselves is just insane... what's going on with our society? we need more support for these kids ASAP 🤝 they're already dealing with so much and now you add suicidal thoughts on top of that? it's a bloody tragedy 🚔 and i'm not even surprised by the lack of support from the government 🤷‍♂️ at least they're making plans to do something about it, but it's about time... we need action now, not just empty promises 💪

🤕 It's like, totally crazy that kids in foster care are so much more likely to try and end their own lives compared to those who don't have any experience with it. Like, what's going on?! 🤔 The stats are just shocking - 26% of 17-year-olds in foster care have tried to kill themselves? That's like, a quarter of the age group! 😱 And it's not just about suicide, they're also more likely to get into all sorts of other trouble like sex at a young age and having kids while underage. It's like, totally unacceptable. 🤦‍♀️ We need to do something about this ASAP, especially since the gov has already said they're going to step in with some new plans for mental health support and stuff. Maybe if we focus on families and supporting them throughout their lives, we can prevent some of these problems from happening in the first place? That would be a total game-changer. 🙌

Wow 🤯, this is so depressing, like 1 in 4 teenagers are literally struggling that much! Interesting 🤔 how the lack of experience has such a big difference, it's like they're protected or something? And yeah, a family-focused approach sounds like a good idea, maybe they can have more support at home and not feel so alone.
