Our Town review – Michael Sheen brings warmth and wit to Welsh National Theatre opener

Michael Sheen brings a captivating warmth to his portrayal of the Stage Manager in the Welsh National Theatre's revival of Thornton Wilder's classic play 'Our Town'. The production, which transposes the American original to its Welsh equivalent, successfully captures the essence of Wilder's timeless drama.

The show revolves around the life of George Gibbs and Emily Webb, two young souls who navigate love, loss, and the passage of time in their idyllic but seemingly ordinary town. Sheen masterfully weaves his character's narrative thread throughout the three-act play, effortlessly oscillating between mischievousness, earnestness, and bathos.

The set design by Hayley Grindle skillfully utilizes props to evoke a sense of emptiness, using wooden planks to create an expressive framework for the story. However, some might find that the production's lack of tension or conflict dilutes its emotional impact, likening it to the sentimental portrayal of 'The Waltons'.

Despite this, the show does excel in its portrayal of more subtle and poignant themes, such as the struggles faced by a gay character in a small town setting. This particular scene is rendered through an impressive use of mime, skillfully conveying the trapped emotions of its protagonist.

Ultimately, 'Our Town' serves as a heartwarming reminder to appreciate the everyday moments that make life worth living. With a talented cast and Michael Sheen's captivating performance, this production is sure to delight audiences with its poignant portrayal of human connection in all its forms.

I just saw this review and I gotta say 🤩, I'm low-key obsessed with 'Our Town' now! The fact that they got the set design just right with those wooden planks is giving me all the vibes 🛠️. And omg, a gay character in a small town setting being portrayed through mime? 😭😊 That's what you call powerful storytelling! I love how it highlights the importance of appreciating everyday moments and human connection – it's like, don't we all just want to feel seen and loved in our own little towns? 🌳💕

🤩 I just watched 'Our Town' at the Welsh National Theatre and I gotta say, it was like sipping hot tea on a cold winter morning - soothing and utterly calming 😌. The cast was absolutely phenomenal, but Michael Sheen's performance as the Stage Manager stole the show for me 👏. The way he wove his character's narrative throughout the play was pure magic ✨. I loved how the set design used props to create this sense of emptiness that just drew you in 🤔. And that scene with the gay character? Absolutely powerful 💖. It's a show that'll make you feel all the feels and remind you to appreciate those little moments in life 🌞.

I've been thinking, I loved how they did the set design for "Our Town", it was so clever using wooden planks 🛠️, but at the same time, I felt like the show could've had a bit more edge to it, you know? It's like it was all really sweet and sentimental 😊. But hey, that's just my two cents! The actor who played the Stage Manager was amazing btw 👏, his warmth on stage was infectious. And that scene with the mime was so powerful, I felt like I was right there with the character 🤯. Overall, it was a really lovely production, but maybe could've used a bit more complexity to make it truly stand out 💡.

Just watched the Welsh National Theatre's 'Our Town' with my friends 🤩🎭 and I gotta say, it was soooo good! The Stage Manager's character was like a glue that held the whole story together - Michael Sheen's acting is insane 🤯! And can we talk about the set design? Those wooden planks created this amazing atmosphere 🌳. But what really stood out to me was how they tackled those sensitive topics, especially with the gay character 😊. It's so refreshing to see a show that doesn't shy away from these issues and still manages to be uplifting at the same time 💕. I'm not gonna lie, it got me a little teary-eyed 🤣. Definitely recommend checking out this production if you haven't seen it yet! 👍

I gotta say, I was really looking forward to this revival of 'Our Town' but it kinda fell flat for me 🤔. Don't get me wrong, Michael Sheen's Stage Manager is super engaging and brings a lot of warmth to the role, but for me, the show felt a bit too laid-back? I mean, I get that it's supposed to be this heartwarming portrayal of everyday life, but sometimes less tension can make it feel a bit... bland 😐. The set design was lovely though! 🌿

idk why anyone's sayin this play is sentimental 😒 I mean, it's like watchin a rom-com, but without the romance lol 🤣. I get that Wilder's tryna tell us about the importance of everyday life and all, but sometimes less is more, ya know? Like, can't we just appreciate the quiet moments without everythin' bein' so... cheerful? 😐

I LOVED THIS PRODUCTION OF 'OUR TOWN'!!! MICHAEL SHEEN IS ABSOLUTELY BRILLANT AS THE STAGE MANAGER - HE'S GOT SUCH A WONDERFUL WAY WITH WORDS AND EMOTION! 🤩 I also have to give a huge shoutout to the set designer, HAYLEY GRINDE - THOSE WOODEN PLANKS LOOK AMAZING!!! BUT WHAT REALLY STUCK WITH ME WAS THE SCENE WITH THE GAY CHARACTER - IT'S SO POWERFUL TO SEE HIM EXPRESSED THROUGH MIME IN SUCH A TACTFUL WAY 🤗. I THINK THE SHOW COULD'VE BENEFITED FROM A BIT MORE CONFLICT, BUT OVERALL IT'S JUST SUCH A HEARTWARMING AND UPLIFTING PRODUCTION!!!

man this stage manager character is kinda annoying lol 😒 the show is so sweet but sometimes i felt like michael sheen was having too much fun being a dad or something his energy is infectious tho 🤣 and what's up with the set design it's like they took all the excitement out of the story 🎭😴

omg i just saw this play and michael sheen's stage manager is literally the heart of the whole show 🤩 he brings so much warmth & energy to the whole thing! i loved how they used props to create this sense of emptiness, it was really clever. and that scene with the gay character? *sniffles* it was so beautifully done. i think some people might say its a bit sentimental but honestly, thats what makes it so beautiful 😊 the show is all about appreciating those little moments in life that make it special. can't wait to see more of michael sheen's work! 👏

This stage play sounds really interesting 🤔🎭 I love how it captures the essence of 'Our Town' while adapting it to the Welsh culture 😊. Michael Sheen's character seems super relatable, bringing a warmth to his role that would make you want to watch more of him. The use of props in set design is also quite clever 🤩, and I appreciate how they tackled some poignant themes like being gay in a small town. Can't wait to see it live on stage! 👏

I'm not buying it. This "poignant portrayal of human connection" sounds like a total snooze-fest to me 🤯. I mean, who needs drama and conflict when you can just have people sitting around looking all sad and sentimental? It's like they're trying to make you feel something without actually being realistic about life. And don't even get me started on the "heartwarming reminder" part – it's just a bunch of fluffy nonsense. 🙄

I just watched this play "Our Town" at Welsh National Theatre 🎭 and I gotta say, it was really good! The actor playing the Stage Manager, Michael Sheen, brought a warmth to the character that made me feel like I was watching an old friend come on stage 😊. I loved how the set design used props to create this empty but cozy feeling... it felt so real!

But I did find some parts a bit sentimental, like from "The Waltons" 🤔. It's like, the play is trying to say something big about life and love, but sometimes it feels a bit too easy or straightforward? And the scene with the gay character was really powerful... using mime to show their emotions was genius! 👏

Overall though, I think "Our Town" is just a beautiful reminder to appreciate the little things in life 🌞. It's like, we get so caught up in our own problems that we forget to enjoy the everyday moments with the people we love ❤️. Anyway, if you ever get the chance to see this play, take it! 😊

omg i looooved michael sheen in our town!!! 🤩 he brings so much warmth & depth to the stage manager character its like he's literally narrating your entire life 📚😂 and the set design is literally stunning tho i feel bad for the ppl who said it felt like the waltons tho 😒 but omg that mime scene in the gay character scene was EVERYTHING 💖👏

I'm totally obsessed with Michael Sheen's Stage Manager - he brings so much warmth and energy to the role! 🤩 The way they weaved the story together was pure magic. And I love how the set design used props to create this sense of emptiness, it really added to the emotional impact. 🌳 But yeah, maybe the lack of tension could've been a bit more engaging for some people? It felt a bit like a warm hug that you knew was coming from a mile away 😊. Still, that scene with the gay character was so beautifully done and I'm all about representation! 💖 It's always so refreshing to see everyday moments portrayed as beautiful and worth cherishing.

I think what resonates with me about 'Our Town' is how it beautifully subverts our expectations of a traditional small-town narrative. I mean, we've seen the 'Waltons'-esque family dramas before, but Wilder's masterpiece offers something more nuanced - an exploration of the intricate web of relationships and experiences that make life truly special 🌟

The way Sheen brings warmth to his portrayal of the Stage Manager is indeed captivating, and it's clever how he uses mischievousness and earnestness to balance out the tone. I also appreciate how the production tackles themes like love, loss, and identity in a way that feels authentic and poignant 😊

What struck me most was the use of mime to convey the struggles of the gay character - it was such a powerful statement on the importance of representation and vulnerability 🌈

I love how they adapted 'Our Town' into a Welsh version 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿! The stage manager's character is so well done, it feels like he's just hanging out with you, guiding the whole story along. I mean, the set design is super clever with all those wooden planks, it really adds to the emptiness and simplicity of the town life. And oh man, that gay character scene is so beautifully acted... I don't wanna say more or it'll be ruined for me too 😊. What I do think could've been done differently is maybe add a bit more conflict or tension in some parts, but overall it's a really sweet and heartwarming show. Worth checking out if you're into character-driven dramas 🎭!

🎭 Interesting that they're playing with the idea of place by transposing 'Our Town' to Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿, it's a fresh take on a classic play! Michael Sheen is defo bringing warmth to his role 😊.

I think what I love most about 'Our Town' is how it reminds us that even in our daily routines, there's beauty and depth to be found. The show doesn't shy away from the tough stuff, but it also knows when to hold back and let the quiet moments speak for themselves. It's like a warm hug on a cold day 🤗. Michael Sheen is indeed fantastic as the Stage Manager, he has this way of making you feel like you're right there with the characters. The set design is pretty cool too, I love how they used props to create that sense of emptiness. Maybe the pacing could be a bit tighter in some places, but overall it's a really lovely production 🌼

I just saw the most beautiful play 🌹💫 - Our Town at the Welsh National Theatre! The Stage Manager, played by Michael Sheen, was so charming and warm 😊... it's like he knew all our secrets! The set design was amazing too, with these wooden planks that made the whole thing feel cozy and intimate. I loved how they tackled themes of love, loss, and being true to yourself, especially in a way that felt real and relatable. I do wish there was more tension or conflict, but overall it just felt so... life-affirming? 🌞
