Traffic Nightmare Ahead: Overnight Lane Closures on I-95 to Cause Delays in Philly
Philadelphia drivers can expect a headache on the roads next week, as PennDOT announces overnight lane closures on two segments of Interstate 95. The closures are part of a massive $355.3 million project to widen and reconstruct I-95 between Wheatsheaf Lane and Margaret Street.
From Monday through Friday nights, from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m., crews will be removing barriers, paving the highway, and making lane adjustments on two sections of I-95 in Northeast Philadelphia. The Cottman Avenue and Allegheny Avenue interchanges will be affected, causing traffic delays for drivers.
Meanwhile, in South Philadelphia, a single lane closure will be in place on I-95 South between Christian Street and Packer Avenue from 9 p.m. to midnight Wednesday through Friday, while another lane will be closed each night from midnight until 5 a.m. Crews will set up a new traffic pattern to perform bridge repairs as part of a $37.4 million project.
Center City residents won't escape the chaos either, with single lane closures on Chestnut Street between 22nd and Broad Streets and Walnut Street between Broad and 23rd streets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Crews will be performing line striping and resurfacing work.
As the city grapples with infrastructure needs, motorists are reminded to plan ahead for potential delays and adjust their daily commutes accordingly.
