Peru's ousted 'president of the poor' gets 11-year sentence for rebellion

Peru's 'Poor President' Sentenced to 11 Years in Prison for Rebellion

Pedro Castillo, Peru's ousted leftwing president, has been sentenced to 11 years and five months in prison for his attempt to disband Congress and rule by decree in December 2022. The former rural schoolteacher, who had never held elected office before winning the presidency as a candidate promising to uplift the country's poor, was labeled "Peru's first poor president" due to his humble origins.

Castillo's decision to dissolve Congress, which was dominated by opposition parties, was seen as an attempt to avoid impeachment for alleged corruption. However, it backfired spectacularly, with members of his own government siding against him. His stunt sparked mass protests among his working-class rural base, which were harshly repressed, resulting in at least 50 deaths.

The supreme court verdict comes a day after another leftwing ex-president, MartΓn Vizcarra, was sentenced to 14 years' imprisonment for bribe-taking while serving as a regional governor. Castillo had repeatedly clashed with Congress during his 16 months in power and had been imprisoned pending trial at a special penitentiary for ex-leaders.

Castillo's case took a dramatic turn earlier this month when his former prime minister, Betssy ChΓ‘vez, also put in the dock, was given asylum by the Mexican embassy. Peru broke off diplomatic ties with Mexico over what it called an "unfriendly act" and has not ruled out storming the Mexican embassy to arrest her.

The sentencing brings an end to a tumultuous period in Peruvian politics, marked by widespread protests, repression, and impeachment of two successive leftwing presidents. Castillo's successor, Dina Boluarte, led the country for 22 months but was also impeached in October. The verdict serves as a reminder of the consequences of attempting to bypass democratic institutions and rule by decree.

idk wut peru is doin @ them πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Pedro Castillo's sentence better be worth it, like 11 yrs is a lot... cant believe he tried to just dissolves congress lol what was he thinkin? poor guy got played hard πŸ€‘ anyhoo, seems like Peru's got some deep issues w/ democracy & rule of law πŸ“š guess dina boluarte learned her lesson after his fall πŸ˜’

man, pedro castillo is like, so done πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ his whole "poor president" thing was just a publicity stunt, but you can't fake humility for 11 years in prison πŸ˜‚ imagine being stuck in that cell with no internet or games to play, it's a total bummer. anyway, the supreme court verdict is like, super expected, these people gotta face the music 🎢 and who knows, maybe this will be the end of all this drama in peru... a girl can dream 😴

πŸ™„ gotta feel bad for Pedro Castillo, huh? Poor dude got played by his own people... like, literally took on Congress and got owned. πŸ˜‚ 50 deaths is a pretty steep price to pay for power, mate. And can we talk about the timing of this whole ordeal? His former PM gets asylum in Mexico and Peru freaks out, loses diplomatic ties with them... sounds like a classic case of "we're all mad here" 🀯. Anyway, 11 years in the slammer seems like a pretty sweet deal for trying to overthrow democracy. Guess you get what's coming when you try to be a rebel without a cause πŸ’”

I'm so done with politicians who think they can just take over like that πŸ˜’. I mean, come on, Pedro Castillo knew he was going to get caught trying to dissolve Congress, but he still went through with it. It's not like he didn't know what would happen if people got mad. And now he's getting 11 years in prison? About time someone held him accountable πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. I feel for the victims of those protests, though - 50 deaths is just heartbreaking 😭. It's crazy how politics can get so out of hand and people lose sight of what's really important 🀯.

I'm like totally shocked about Pedro Castillo getting sentenced to 11 years in prison 🀯, you know? I mean, I knew he had been having some problems with Congress, but 50 deaths during those protests? That's just insane 😱. And now this is gonna set a bad example for all the other politicians out there, like "if you don't do what we say, you'll end up in prison" πŸš”.

I'm not saying he was right or anything, but I feel kinda bad for him, ya know? He just wanted to help the poor and make a difference in Peru's life. But I guess that's all being tossed out the window now πŸ’”. The Mexican embassy giving asylum to Betssy ChΓ‘vez? That's like a total wild card move πŸƒ.

Anyway, I guess this is just another example of how politics can be super complicated and messy 🀯. Peru's been through some crazy stuff with these leftwing presidents getting impeached and sentenced... what's up with that?! πŸ€”

man this is wild stuff 🀯 pedro castillo thought he could just disregard congress and try to be some kinda dictator and now he's facing 11 years in the slammer πŸš” it's crazy how far things went downhill for him, from a humble schoolteacher to being labeled "poor president" πŸ˜‚ then there's the fact that he was so desperate to avoid impeachment that he basically took on Congress himself... talk about taking it to the extreme πŸ’₯ and now the whole country is paying the price πŸ€•

11 years in prison is still way too long imo πŸ€”... Pedro Castillo's fate was sealed from day one, it seems like he just wanted to shake things up but didn't think it through. I feel bad for his supporters who lost loved ones during the protests - it's devastating πŸ’”. It's also kinda interesting that Betssy ChΓ‘vez got asylum in Mexico 🌴... Peru and Mexico have a history of being close friends, maybe they'll work something out? Anyway, it just goes to show you how fragile the line is between democracy and authoritarianism πŸ’ͺ

man this sentence is crazy 11 years in prison for trying to shake things up in peru's politics you feel for pedro castillo, he came from humble beginnings with a promise to uplift the poor but got caught up in power struggle πŸ€•πŸš«. its sad that his attempt to avoid impeachment backfired and led to widespread protests and repression πŸ’”. now that he's sentenced, i hope it sparks some reflection on how politics should be done in peru - by the people, for the people πŸ‘₯.

11 years is a pretty harsh sentence imo πŸ€”, considering he was already trying to break free from the system that's kept his country poor for so long. I feel bad for Pedro Castillo, who genuinely wanted to make a difference in Peru's economy. The whole ordeal reminds me of that scene in "House of Cards" where Frank Underwood tries to take down Congress - it backfires and he ends up getting caught πŸ˜‚.

The fact that Betssy ChΓ‘vez got asylum in Mexico is wild πŸŒͺ️, though. I guess you could say she's the ultimate "Breaking Bad" protagonist - one minute she's a key player in Peruvian politics, next thing you know she's on the run and living it up in Mexico 🌴.

The aftermath of Castillo's ouster and subsequent impeachment is like something out of "Game of Thrones" - constant power struggles and drama πŸ’₯. It's crazy how politics can be so unpredictable!

I'm totally with Pedro Castillo on this one πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Like, who needs Congress when you've got the people's will, right? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ I mean, what's a few mass protests and some deaths when you're trying to shake things up? πŸŒͺ️ It was all just part of his revolution, man! 😎 The fact that he went down for it is just proof that the system is rigged against people like him who are willing to take risks. πŸ’₯ And yeah, Betssy ChΓ‘vez getting asylum in Mexico? That's just another example of the hypocrisy and corruption that Castillo was trying to expose. πŸ€”

πŸ€” I'm all for Pedro Castillo being held accountable for his actions, but 11 years is a bit harsh, don't you think? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I mean, he was trying to shake things up and bring about change, even if it didn't quite work out as planned. He was definitely passionate about his policies, but maybe not the best at navigating the complexities of politics. πŸ˜’ But on the other hand, he did spark some important conversations about income inequality and poverty in Peru... so yeah, I guess I'm torn about this whole thing πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. And what's with all the controversy around Betssy ChΓ‘vez getting asylum? Is it really that serious? πŸ™„ Shouldn't they just extradite her or something? πŸš«πŸ’β€β™€οΈ

I'm so frustrated with this whole situation πŸ˜”. It just goes to show how out of touch our leaders can be sometimes. I mean, Pedro Castillo came into office promising to help the poor, but it seems like he ended up hurting his own base instead πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. And what's with the mass protests and repression? Can't we find a way to address our problems without resorting to violence or authoritarianism? πŸ’”

It's not just Castillo, though - the whole system is broken. We need leaders who are willing to listen and work with people, not just try to silence them through prison sentences 🚫. And what about Betssy ChΓ‘vez getting asylum in Mexico? That just adds more fuel to the fire πŸ”₯. I guess we'll just have to keep fighting for a better system that puts people over politics πŸ‘Š.

Anyway, 11 years in prison is a pretty harsh sentence 🀯. I hope it serves as a deterrent, but at the same time, it feels like a missed opportunity for Castillo to actually make a difference πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Oh well, I guess we'll just have to wait and see how the next chapter plays out 😬.

πŸ€” the thing is... Pedro Castillo might've won an election on promises of change, but once he got power, things got messy fast 🀯 it's like he lost sight of what made him a candidate in the first place - helping the poor and marginalized 🌎 instead of trying to rig the system and maintain control for himself. 11 years in prison seems like a pretty severe sentence, especially considering he was already being impeached on corruption charges when he tried to dissolve Congress 😬 what's interesting is that it's not just Castillo who got caught up in this mess - his own government members turned against him 🀝 and even the Mexican embassy had to intervene to save one of them.

πŸ€” 11 years in prison seems like an awfully long sentence for just trying to shake things up in Peru's government πŸ™„. I mean, the guy was elected on a promise to help the poor and now he gets punished for trying to follow through? πŸ€‘ It just doesn't add up. Can we get some more info on how this all went down? Was there any corruption involved or was it just a power play? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I'm also curious about what role the Mexican embassy played in giving asylum to Betssy ChΓ‘vez - was it a genuine case of persecution or just a convenient escape route for her? πŸšͺ
