Phillies contract extension candidates: Are any impending free agents longterm pieces?

Philadelphia Phillies in Line for Significant Salary Relief Next Year, But Will They Make Long-Term Investments?

The Phillies' upcoming free agent scenario is shaping up to be a fascinating one. Several high-priced players are set to leave the roster after this season, and with the team's anticipated increase in payroll flexibility, they may finally be able to make some long-term investments.

Assuming the MLB labor issues don't completely overhaul the current financial system, the Phillies will have around $82 million coming off their books. While it's likely that most of these departing players will walk, there are a few candidates who might catch the team's eye for extension talks.

One player often mentioned in extension discussions is Jhoan Duran, who has shown himself to be an elite late-innings closer. If he continues to dominate on the mound, the Phillies may want to lock him up before he hits free agency and commands a massive payday. A preemptive extension would make perfect sense for Duran as his prime years approach.

On the other hand, players like Edmundo Sosa, Alec Bohm, Adolis García, and José Alvarado will likely be on the move next year. Sosa, with his impressive defensive skills and hitting ability, might not fit into the Phillies' plans for a potential infield upgrade, while Bohm's trade rumors have been persistent for years, suggesting he may not be part of the team's future.

The Phillies did extend some players recently, including Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto in the offseason, as well as Cris Sánchez last year. While it's unclear whether they'll follow a similar path with their upcoming free agents, it's clear that they value investing in their core players for the long haul.

Other players worth considering for extensions are Bryson Stott and Brandon Marsh, both of whom have shown flashes of promise but also have significant flaws. Their arbitration years will come to an end next season, making them prime candidates for low-cost deals.

As the Phillies look to build a contender around their core players, they'll need to make some smart decisions about who to keep and who to let go. Will they take a chance on extending one of their prized young prospects, like Andrew Painter or Aidan Miller? The answer to that question could have significant implications for the team's future success.

I'm kinda hyped about the Phillies' roster changes next year 🤔💡 I mean, losing those high-priced players can't be a bad thing, right? It means they'll have more wiggle room to sign their own guys long-term. Like, imagine Jhoan Duran locking in for like 5-7 years... that's a dream come true for Phillies fans 🙌! But at the same time, it's tough to see some of the younger guys go... I mean, what about Bryson Stott? Does he deserve a chance or is he toast? 🤷‍♂️ Anyway, can't wait to see how this all plays out 📺! [Check out MLB.com](https://www.mlb.com/news)

omg i feel like the phillies r in a sweet spot right now 🤩 they've got the cash to make some big moves but also need to decide who's worth investing in long term. duran is def someone they should lock up ASAP, he's been on fire and has elite stuff 😲 but idk about sosa, i mean his defense is top notch but does he fit into their infield plans? 🤔 gotta see what the future holds for bohms trade rumors r just getting old lol 🙄

I'm so stoked the Phillies are getting some salary relief 🤩. It'll be sick if they make long-term investments in players like Jhoan Duran - he's been on fire this season! But, at the same time, I feel like they need to take a closer look at guys like Edmundo Sosa and Alec Bohm - are they gonna stick around or get traded? 🤔 And what about Bryson Stott and Brandon Marsh? They've got potential, but are they worth investing in? The Phillies have some tough decisions to make if they wanna build a contender 📈. Maybe they should consider extending guys like Andrew Painter or Aidan Miller too - he's been looking pretty good on the mound! 💪

I'm loving this Philly team's potential! 🤩 With all those big-name players leaving, it's gonna be crazy how they manage their finances and make moves. I think Duran would be a genius signing - he's already showing signs of being an ace closer! 💪 As for the others, Sosa seems like a no-brainer to keep, but Bohm's trade rumors are giving me some anxiety 😬. The young guys, though... Painter and Miller have so much potential, I'd love to see them get locked up on some sweet deals 🤑 It's gonna be interesting to watch how the team navigates these moves - my money's on them making some smart investments! 💸

The Phillies are finally getting some financial flexibility 🤑. It's about time they start investing in their core players instead of just throwing money at random signings. I think they should definitely keep Jhoan Duran, he's been killing it on the mound and would be a great addition to the bullpen. They also need to consider extending Bryson Stott, he's got some serious upside but can be inconsistent at times. As for Alec Bohm, I'm not sure what's going on with him 🤔. If they're gonna keep him, they gotta make it work or risk losing him. The team needs a clear plan and not just throw money at problems.
