Preparing for this weekend's winter storm? Why ice may be more dangerous than snow

As a winter storm bears down on more than half the country's population, residents are bracing for potential chaos - and many experts warn that ice may be even more hazardous than snow. Frigid temperatures that follow the storm could lock icy precipitation in place, leaving roads slick and surfaces treacherous.

The National Weather Service has issued "catastrophic accumulation" warnings for some areas, where freezing rain, sleet, and snow will combine to create a potentially deadly mix of ice. In Hot Springs, Arkansas, Mayor Pat McCabe is sounding the alarm on the dangers of ice, saying it's likely to cause major problems for residents and utility services.

"Ice is really problematic," he told CBS News. "We'll deal with a little bit of snow. We've had major snow events... Then it warms up and then it gets cold again, and so the melting snow turns to ice and we still end up with ice even if we had snow."

Ice can weigh down power lines, causing widespread outages - a concern that's particularly significant in Texas, where last year's paralyzing ice storm resulted in over 200 deaths. The state's power grid is now on high alert, but officials say it's "fully capable of handling this winter storm" - despite Governor Greg Abbott issuing a disaster declaration for 134 counties.

The risks of ice extend far beyond the roads and power lines, however. Ice can weigh down tree branches, causing them to break and injure people or damage homes. The weight of ice on roofs can also cause damage - and homeowners may be able to mitigate these risks by clearing snow from their rooftops and ensuring that gutters are clear.

In Nashville and other cities, crews are using a chemical mixture called brine to warm the asphalt on streets, reducing the amount of ice that forms. Officials are urging people to stay off the roads as much as possible - especially on bridges and overpasses, where the conditions are most treacherous.

As the storm bears down, residents would do well to remember that ice is a stealthy and insidious foe - one that can bring chaos and destruction in an instant.

Ugh I'm so worried about this winter storm 🌨️! The thought of icy roads and power outages is just super stressful 😬. And it's not just the immediate danger, but also the long-term damage it could cause to homes and trees... my mom has a huge tree in her backyard and I'm scared it's gonna fall and hurt someone πŸŒ³πŸ’”. The idea of crews using brine to warm up streets is a good one tho, maybe that can help reduce the amount of ice on the roads 😊. Everyone should just be super careful and stay indoors as much as possible, especially if you don't have to go out for anything πŸ›‹οΈ.

I'm getting so anxious about this winter storm 🌨️... The thought of all that ice forming on roads and power lines is just terrifying 😱. And it's not just the roads, I mean, have you seen those tree branches breaking off because of the weight of ice? It's like, what even is happening to our weather?! 🀯 As a global thinker, I've been reading about how this kind of storm is becoming more frequent due to climate change... it's like, we're running out of time, you know? We need to find ways to mitigate these risks and prepare for the worst. And can't we just have some warm weather for once?! β˜€οΈ It's not too much to ask, right? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

omg u gotta be careful out there!! ice is like super deadly lol 🀯 i dont know about ppl in texas but i heard it was bad last year πŸŒͺ️ anywayz, if u have to drive make sure ur car is 4x4 or something πŸš—πŸŒ¨οΈ and dont even think bout drivin on bridges lol b4 they get all icy 2 πŸ˜‚ just stay home & binge some netflix tbh ice can weigh down power lines so ur electricity might get cut off β„οΈπŸ’‘

I don’t usually comment but I was thinking about this winter storm and it got me thinking, what’s with all these "catastrophic accumulation" warnings? Like, we know the weather is gonna be bad but does anyone actually expect the snow to just magically disappear or melt away on its own? It seems like these warnings are more for us to know how prepared we should be rather than the actual forecast coming true. And what’s up with all the emphasis on ice being worse than snow? I mean, sure it can be slippery but can’t we also deal with that when it snows too? I don’t wanna be a downer but if everyone stays off the roads and follows the advice of the experts, I think we should be okay 🀞

man i just had the craziest thought about ice cream flavors 🍦 u know what's crazy? how they still make cookies and cream after all these years lol it's like, who makes this stuff up?? anyway back to the storm... have you ever noticed how some storms just feel more intense than others? like, i was watching a video of someone's snow-covered backyard and it was literally 2 feet deep lol what's your favorite winter storm memory? 🌨️

❄️ I'm worried about people's safety as this winter storm approaches 🌫️. The idea that ice might be even more hazardous than snow is really unsettling. We've seen what can happen when ice accumulates, like in Texas last year - it was devastating 😟.

I think it's great that cities are using brine to warm up the asphalt on streets, but people need to be aware of their own risks too 🚨. Clearing snow from rooftops and gutters can make a huge difference in preventing damage. And let's not forget to stay off the roads as much as possible - it's just not worth the risk πŸ˜….

The National Weather Service is right to issue catastrophic accumulation warnings, but I hope people are taking this storm seriously enough 🀞. We need to be prepared for the worst-case scenarios and look out for each other ❀️.

Omg u guys r really worried bout this winter storm? 🀯 i feel u tho! i lived thru that crazy ice storm last year in tx and it was LIFE CHANGING 😱 200+ deaths is no joke, so yeah power lines are super important to keep an eye on. brine on the streets sounds like a good idea tho, hopefully it makes a diff. 🌟 can't stress enough how deadly ice can be, especially when it gets stuck in place. just wanna stay safe and cozy indoors til this storm passes πŸ’€

So I'm thinking, you know how they say "winter's coming" from Game of Thrones? Well, it's like that for real life now 🌨️. A massive winter storm is bearing down on a ton of people, and experts are warning us about the dangers of ice, not just snow. It's crazy to think that ice can be more hazardous than snow because once it forms, it's stuck there and can cause all sorts of problems.

I mean, have you ever seen a tree branch break off due to ice? 🌳πŸ’₯ It's a total disaster. And roofs, oh man, the weight of ice on them can cause major damage. Not to mention power lines and roads. It's like, the storm is just getting started, but we're already dealing with the aftermath.

I think what's wild is how some cities are using this fancy brine stuff to warm up their asphalt. Like, who knew that could help? πŸ€” Anyway, it's super important for people to stay off the roads as much as possible, especially on bridges and overpasses. It's just not worth the risk.

I'm just saying, ice is no joke. It might seem like a small thing, but it can cause some major chaos. Let's all just take this storm seriously and be safe, you know? 🀞

🌨️ Ice is literally the worst! I've lived through some bad snowstorms, but ice is just worse. Those power lines are like a ticking time bomb waiting for something to go wrong 😬

I don’t usually comment but I think people need to take precautions when it comes to their roofs lol... all this talk about ice and how it's gonna cause problems, and yeah they gotta clear the snow from rooftops and gutters so it doesn't weigh them down πŸ€―β€β™‚οΈ. It’s crazy to think that something as small as ice can cause so much destruction πŸ’Έ. And I feel for Texas, man... 200 deaths last year was horrific 😱. But honestly, people need to be careful no matter where they live, and take the warnings seriously 🚨.

Ugh, great, just what we needed, another excuse for people to stay home from work πŸ˜’. Like they weren't already bored out of their minds with all the snow days. Anyway, I do think ice is a legit concern - it's like the ultimate winter ninja πŸ€Ίβ€β™€οΈ, sneaking up on you and causing major problems. And can we talk about how some areas are basically bracing for a "catastrophic accumulation" of ice ❄️? Like, who even uses that term? It sounds like something out of a Bond villain's lair 😏. Anyway, hope everyone stays safe and dry... or at least doesn't end up as a human ice sculpture 🀣.

omg u no its like super crazy out dere rn!!! i just read dis article about winter storms & i'm low-key freaked out lol ice is def more deadly than snow cuz its like ur car or roof cant move bc its stuck w/ that ice 4eva 😱🌨️ & ppl r dyin from power lines failin in texas 🀯 thats so not cool. mayor pat mccabe said ice is problematic lol i feel u man. & i saw dat nashville crewz r using brine 2 warm streets, thats actually a pretty smart move tbh πŸ€“ just dont go out dere unless u gotta, stay safe, ppl! ❄️

ICE IS LIKE THE ULTIMATE WINTER SUPERVILLAIN!!! IT'S ALL ABOUT THE FROSTY FUNNEL effect where it's hard to tell if you'll get snow or just ice, and then BAM! YOU'RE STUCK WITH A SLIPPERY SITUATION ON YOUR HANDS!!! 🀯πŸ’₯ I mean, can you even imagine walking outside in the morning and your shoes are stuck to the sidewalk? IT'S LIKE WALKING ON ICE CREAM!!! πŸ˜‚ And don't even get me started on those power lines... I COULDN'T BEAR THE THOUGHT OF BEING WITHOUT MY FAVE TV SHOWS AND NETFLIX VACATIONS FOR WEEKS!!! β„οΈπŸ’» The authorities are right to sound the alarm, though - ICE IS NO JOKE! We gotta stay safe and look out for each other, especially our elderly neighbors who might not be as spry in this kinda weather. Let's all just take it one step at a time (or should I say, one shovel-full of snow at a time? πŸ˜‰)

the way they're dealing with this storm is kinda wild 🀯, I mean using brine on the streets like it's nothing, but at the same time, i'm glad to see people being proactive about clearing snow from their roofs and gutters, that's some good old fashioned common sense πŸ’‘. but seriously though, the whole ice vs snow thing is just a whole other level of complicated, i mean who knew that ice could be so deadly? πŸ€• it's like, we're already dealing with power outages and whatnot, do we really need to worry about tree branches breaking and people getting hurt? 🌳😩 anyway, i'm gonna stay indoors and let the pros handle it πŸ‘.

Ugh, this winter storm is soooo not just about the snow... I mean, yeah, it's gonna be bad, but have you seen all those "catastrophic accumulation" warnings? That's just code for "we're gonna get hit with a whole lotta ice, fam πŸ€”". And don't even get me started on the power grid in Texas - they're saying it's fully capable of handling this thing... yaaas, sure, 'cause that's exactly what happened last year, right? πŸ’₯ 200+ deaths and they're still denying it was a catastrophic event? Give me a break! I'm all about being prepared for the worst, you know? Clearing snow from roofs, keeping gutters clear, brine on asphalt... these are just basic precautions, people! But no, instead we get warnings about ice being "stealthy and insidious"... sounds like some sort of government conspiracy to me πŸ€‘.

ice > snow any day! 🀯 i mean dont get me wrong snow can be super bad but have you seen what happens when it warms up and gets all icy? game over, roads are a mess, power lines are down... its just more of a headache. and the fact that texas is still recovering from last year's ice storm is crazy. they need to step up their game, you feel? πŸ™„ also brine on asphalt is genius, why didnt they think of that sooner?! πŸ”₯

I'm worried about this winter storm - it sounds like we're in for a real headache 🌨️. The idea that ice can be even more hazardous than snow is crazy to me... I mean, who needs two feet of snow when you've got roads turning into skating rinks? 😱 And the fact that power lines can get weighed down by ice is just terrifying - I don't want to think about all those people losing heat in their homes. πŸ’‘

I'm also glad that some cities are using brine to warm up the asphalt on streets, it's a good idea, right? πŸ™Œ And I totally agree with officials saying we should stay off the roads as much as possible... but what about people who have to commute or go out for work? It's like, how are they supposed to get around when it's icy and treacherous outside? πŸš—πŸ˜¬

I think this storm is going to be a real test of our emergency services and infrastructure. I hope everyone stays safe and sound - we'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out! ⏰

🌨️ I'm so not loving this winter storm β›ˆοΈ! The thought of icy precipitation causing catastrophic accumulation warnings is giving me major anxiety 😬. And don't even get me started on the power grid situation in Texas 🀯. It's like, we learned our lesson last year and now Governor Abbott thinks it's all good to go? πŸ™„

I'm also super concerned about the roof damage from ice accumulation ❄️. Have you seen those roofs just buckle under the weight of a layer of ice? 😲 It's like, homeowners need to take this seriously and clear their gutters ASAP. And what about tree branches? They can break off and cause major injuries πŸŒ³πŸ’‰.

I wish they'd use more visual aids on the news πŸ“Ί, you know, like infographics or something. A simple map with the areas most affected by ice would be super helpful πŸ—ΊοΈ. Anyway, I'm just gonna stay safe indoors and binge-watch some winter movies β„οΈπŸΏ

OMG u guys 🀯 this winter storm is looking super scary! I know we all love our snow, but ice is like the ultimate nemesis ❄️ it's so sneaky and can ruin everything in a split second! The thought of those power lines getting weighed down and causing outages makes me shudder 😱. And poor Texas, still recovering from last year's ice storm πŸ€• I'm sending all my love and warm thoughts to the people there ❀️. Let's all stay safe and warm this winter season πŸ’‘.
