Primitive War review – it's Green Berets vs dinosaurs in cheerfully cheesy Vietnam war gorefest

"Primitive War: A Cheesy yet Watchable Monster Mashup of Vietnam"

The new adaptation of Ethan Pettus's 2017 novel is an unapologetically loud and boisterous romp that defies reason and plumbs the depths of campy entertainment. By embracing its own absurdity, this film becomes a strangely addictive spectacle for viewers who revel in high-octane action sequences, gory effects, and – most curiously – dinosaurs.

Set against the tumultuous backdrop of the late 1960s Vietnam War, the movie's central premise is a curious mashup of covert operatives, scientific experimentation gone wrong, and a prehistoric invasion that threatens to upend the entire conflict. The US Green Berets are deployed to uncover the fate of missing comrades, only to find themselves facing an army of rampaging dinosaurs.

The film boasts a talented cast, with Jeremy Piven delivering a scene-stealing turn as Colonel Jericho, a character whose exuberance borders on ham-fistedness. Ryan Kwanten, better known for his stint on Australian soap Home and Away, leads the Vulture Squad with aplomb, if not much intelligence.

One of the film's greatest strengths lies in its sheer noise – a cacophony of gunfire, explosions, and ear-shattering sound effects that often overwhelm dialogue and music. The production team has opted for some delightfully on-the-nose musical cues, including Creedence Clearwater Revival classics like "Run Through the Jungle" and "Fortunate Son."

While the special effects leave much to be desired, particularly when faced with bright daylight, there's a certain cheesy appeal that makes the plastic dinosaurs look almost – dare it be said? – endearing. The film's central conflict is absurdly simplistic, but its enthusiasm is infectious, making for an undeniably watchable experience.

Ultimately, "Primitive War" is a curious beast: part action movie, part campy spectacle, and part unintentionally humorous romp. Love it or hate it, this film will leave viewers entertained – even if they can't quite explain why.

I'm torn about this one 🤔... I mean, I think the filmmakers really leaned into the absurdity of the premise and it's kinda weirdly entertaining? But at the same time, the special effects are super cheesy and it feels like a bunch of unnecessary stuff got added on just for shock value 😒. The cast is talented though! Jeremy Piven is basically the only one who can make that ridiculous character work 🤣. And I get what they're going for with the sound design - it's definitely loud and in-your-face... but sometimes it feels like too much? Like, I'm enjoying the ride but my ears are gonna hate me afterwards 🎧. Overall, it's a weird watch that'll keep you entertained, even if you can't quite fathom why you're watching it 💥

omg i just watched primitive war last nite lol it was such a wild ride! the dinosaurs in it were literally the most cringeworthy thing i've ever seen but at the same time i couldn't look away 🤣 they did it right by embracing the cheesiness and going full-on campy with it. Jeremy Piven's character tho was giving me LIFE 😂 i also loved how they used those iconic creep clearwater revival songs in the movie - it added to the overall vibe of just pure, unadulterated fun 🎸🔫

I'm so down for a cheesy monster mashup, but can we get some actual sources on these prehistoric dinosaurs? I mean, are they CGI creations or did they actually find some fossils that somehow made their way to 'Nam? Also, what's with the special effects issues in bright daylight? You'd think with all the tech we have nowadays, they could've done better than that. And Jeremy Piven as Colonel Jericho sounds like a total caricature – is he even getting paid for that level of absurdity?

lol @ all the hype around this one 🤣 I mean, dinosaurs in Vietnam? Sounds like total nonsense to me. The effects are straight out of a B-movie from the 80s 🎥 and Jeremy Piven's character is just cringeworthy 😂. But hey, I guess if you're into that sorta thing, it might be entertaining for ya. Those Creedence Clearwater Revival soundtracks are pretty iconic though 🎵, so at least they got something right. Still, I'm not buying the whole 'primitive war' vibe – it's just a bunch of stuff thrown together to make some noise and look cool 💥. And those plastic dinosaurs? Gotta be a joke 😂.

OMG 🤯 I just watched the craziest movie - "Primitive War"! It's like a wild ride of a war film mixed with dinosaurs and campy fun 🦖🔫 I was totally skeptical at first, but it ended up being super entertaining! The special effects might be wonky in bright spots, but who cares when you're having this much fun 😂? I loved the over-the-top action sequences and Jeremy Piven's character is just too much to handle 🤣. It's like they took every cheesy war movie cliche and mashed them all together with dinosaurs for extra fun 🎥. I'm not gonna lie, it's a bit ridiculous, but that's kinda what makes it so charming 😊. Would def watch again...or see how many times I can quote Colonel Jericho's one-liners 🤣

I mean... I just watched this crazy movie and it's like, super loud and gory 🤯🔥 but in a weird way it works? Like, who wouldn't want to watch dinosaurs roam around during the Vietnam War? 🦖😂 The cast is pretty cool too, Jeremy Piven is hilarious as that one colonel 🤣. I'm not gonna lie, the special effects are kinda lame in bright spots, but when it gets all dark and gritty they're actually pretty solid 💥. It's like a trainwreck you can't look away from – you'll be like "what am I watching?!" 😳 but at the same time you'll keep watching because it's just so over-the-top. I guess that's what makes it kinda lovable in its own cheesy way ❤️

I just watched this crazy new movie about the Vietnam war with dinosaurs 🦖🇻🇳 and I gotta say, it's SO cheesy it's actually kinda fun 😂! The action scenes are super loud and over-the-top, like something from a bad '80s B-movie, but they're also strangely addictive. And those plastic dinosaurs? 🤣 they're almost adorable in their ridiculousness! The cast is pretty meh, but Jeremy Piven steals every scene he's in 👊. I don't know what to make of the film's weird musical cues, like Creedence Clearwater Revival songs being used for, um, "dramatic effect" 🎵. Overall, it's a super silly movie that's hard to look away from – just don't expect too much depth or realism 😊.

I just watched this new monster mashup Vietnam War film with my kids 🤪 and I gotta say, it was a wild ride 😱! The dinosaurs in the movie were so cheesy that we all ended up laughing at them 🐲😂. As a parent, I'm glad I got to experience this over-the-top entertainment with my family – even if it didn't teach us much about history 😅. The special effects could've been better, but who cares when you're having this much fun? My kids loved the action scenes and explosions 🎥💥, and I liked that it was just a mindless romp without any real tension or drama. All in all, it's a fun night out for the whole family... but maybe stick to educational content afterwards 😆.

I'm literally dying laughing over this thing - dinosaurs in Vietnam?! I mean I know its cheesy but omg the sound effects are just too much! Its like a fever dream of explosions and gunfire and then suddenly T-Rexes stomp onto the battlefield lol what is Ethan Pettus thinking?! Jeremy Piven as Colonel Jericho? Iconic! And the musical cues with Creedence Clearwater Revival classics? Genius! I'm gonna have to watch this just for the sheer ridiculousness of it all 🤣🎥

omg I just watched this film with my squad and we're ALL dying laughing at the most ridiculous parts 🤣🎥! I mean, who wouldn't want to see Jeremy Piven as a Colonel on a mission from God 🙄? The dinosaurs are SO cheesy but in a good way, like they belong in a campy B-movie 🌟. And those sound effects? FORGET ABOUT IT!!! It's like the movie is screaming at you to have fun 💥. Don't @ me when I say it's an "undeniably watchable experience" 😉.

idk what to make of primitive war lol 🤣 its like they took every cheesy action flick from the 80s and mashed them together with a dash of sci-fi. dinosaurs in vietnam? its just wild 🦖 but at the same time, i kinda love it? there's something about watching jeremy piven be obnoxiously loud that's just mesmerizing 😂 and those sound effects? for real, its like they took every ear-shattering moment from a action movie and put them in one film. its not gonna win any awards or anything but its def gonna keep you entertained 🤪

I'm totally stoked about how bad the special effects are 😂👀 I mean, who needs photorealistic CGI when you can have bright green plastic dinosaurs stomping through Vietnam? It's like a trainwreck that you can't look away from – you know it's gonna be cheesy and loud, but somehow it just works.

And honestly, the more I think about it, the more I realize how refreshing it is to see a film that doesn't take itself seriously. The whole premise is ridiculous, and the cast is having so much fun with it that you can't help but get caught up in the energy. It's like a big ol' game of "what's gonna happen next?" 🤔

I'm also loving how the filmmakers have leaned into the absurdity of the whole thing – those Creedence Clearwater Revival sound effects? Genius! 💥 It's just another example of how they're embracing their own campiness and having a blast with it.

All in all, I think "Primitive War" is a strangely addictive experience that will appeal to anyone who loves a good action movie or just wants to see something utterly over-the-top. Even if it's not high art, it's definitely entertaining – and who doesn't love a good laugh? 😆

I gotta say, I'm both confused and entertained by this new adaptation 🤪. On one hand, the idea of dinosaurs in Vietnam sounds like total nonsense 🦖🇻🇳, but at the same time, it's kind of awesome that they just went all-in on it 🎉. The cast seems to be having a blast too, and Jeremy Piven is definitely giving us some serious dad jokes 😂.

I'm not gonna lie, I was skeptical about the special effects, but I guess they're not as bad as I thought 👀. And yeah, the music cues are kinda cheesy, but in a fun way 🎵. It's like the filmmakers knew they were being ridiculous and just rolled with it 😂.

Ultimately, I think "Primitive War" is exactly what it promises to be: a loud, boisterous, and absurdly entertaining ride 🎢. If you're looking for something mindless and fun to watch while you're doing something else, this might be the movie for you 👍. But if you're expecting some kind of serious war drama or historical epic, you're probably gonna be disappointed 😐.
