Prominent art collector, 79, killed in Back Bay hit and run

Local Resident Arrested, Charged with Murder and Animal Cruelty After Hitting Prominent Art Collector in Boston's Back Bay.

A 42-year-old man is facing severe charges after allegedly intentionally hit a renowned art collector and his dog to death while driving into the Commonwealth Mall in Boston's Back Bay early Saturday morning. The pedestrian, identified as John Axelrod, 79, was pronounced dead at the scene after being transported to a hospital.

Prosecutors allege that William Haney deliberately struck Axelrod, who was walking with his dog on Commonwealth Avenue Mall, before fleeing the area. Boston police responded quickly to the scene, where they found the vehicle unoccupied but later located it in Brookline and arrested Haney.

Axelrod was an influential figure in the art community, serving as an honorary advisor at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. The museum recently honored his legacy by naming a gallery after him and showcasing nearly 70 works by Black artists that he had acquired for its collection.

Haney is expected to be arraigned on charges of murder and cruelty to animals, with Suffolk County District Attorney's office announcing the arrest Sunday.

this is just shocking. i mean, what kind of person does this? not only did they take a life, but they also targeted an innocent animal ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ˜ฑ. the guy was like 79 years old and walking his dog, enjoying the morning... and then BAM! some psycho comes along and rams him into the car ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’ฅ. it's just heartbreaking. i hope justice is served and this person gets the maximum sentence possible. the art community is already grieving the loss of john axelrod, now they have to deal with this senseless act of violence too ๐Ÿ’”.

this is crazy ๐Ÿคฏ just heard about this guy getting charged for hitting an old man and his dog ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ˜ฑ i mean what can you even say? it's like something out of a horror movie, but unfortunately it's real life. I feel so bad for the victim's family, especially his dog ๐Ÿพโค๏ธ. 70 years young and he was taken from us too soon ๐Ÿ˜”. The art community is really losing some amazing people lately ๐Ÿ’”. And the fact that this guy deliberately targeted someone just because... what even is wrong with him? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ก anyway, I hope justice gets served quickly for John Axelrod's family ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’ช

omg this man haney has no idea what's wrong with him driving into a poor old guy like john axelrod who's just out for a morning stroll with his dog he's like totally insane ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ’€ i mean seriously who hits someone and then just flees the scene it's not like it was an accident or something you can't just hurt someone that badly and then run away from it you gotta face the consequences ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

and to think john axelrod was such a big deal in the art community too i mean he helped acquire all these amazing works for the museum of fine arts boston what a waste of his life now he's dead because some psycho like haney can't control himself it makes me so angry ๐Ÿ’ฃ and the worst part is that haney's gonna get away with this or at least face minimal charges which is just not right ๐Ÿ˜ก

OMG, like, can you even believe this guy did this? I mean, I've seen some wild things driving in Boston, but this is just crazy. What a terrible human being. Like, what's wrong with him?! And to think he was an art connoisseur or whatever... I guess you could say his taste in humanity left something to be desired . Anyway, 70 works by Black artists to honor John Axelrod... that's so lovely, but also kinda sad that it had to come from someone like Haney. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

Just read about this insane guy who took out an art collector and his dog ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ... like what's even more messed up is that he was supposed to be a respected member of the community, had all these connections in the art world... now it's just a senseless tragedy ๐Ÿ’”.

OMG ๐Ÿคฏ like what's going on in Boston?! This guy William Haney is literally crazy ๐Ÿคช! I mean, hitting an 79 yr old guy and his dog to death? That's just brutal ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. And the fact that he was driving into the mall, it's like he wanted to cause as much chaos as possible ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’ฅ. I feel bad for John Axelrod's family and friends, he seemed like a really cool dude according to what I read about him ๐Ÿ‘. And the museum naming a gallery after him is like, super nice of them to keep his legacy alive ๐Ÿ’•. But Haney just can't seem to get it together, what was going through that head of his? ๐Ÿคฏ

Ugh, this is so sad ๐Ÿค•... can't believe someone would do such a horrific thing to an innocent person & their furry friend ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ˜ข. I mean, I know it's not right to drive into someone or animal on purpose, but still, it's like, basic human decency, you know? ๐Ÿ™„. The fact that this guy was driving around Boston's Back Bay, where all these people walk and live their lives... and then does something like this? It's just so thoughtless ๐Ÿ˜ก. I hope the person who did this gets a good sentence, because it's clearly not enough to even cover up what they've done ๐Ÿ˜”. RIP John Axelrod, may your legacy live on through the museum & the art community ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ’•

I just got back from the most amazing weekend getaway to Cape Cod ๐Ÿ–๏ธ. The weather was incredible, not a cloud in the sky! I went for a long hike at Provincetown and saw some of the most beautiful wildflowers I've ever seen. Reminded me of that time I visited Japan and walked through cherry blossom gardens ๐Ÿ˜Š. Anyway, back to this news... it's just shocking how quickly things escalated from hitting someone to murder and animal cruelty charges ๐Ÿคฏ. Guess you never know what's going on in someone's head, right?

๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ This is just so messed up ๐Ÿšซ... Did you see those stats on road rage incidents in Boston? They've been rising steadily since 2020, especially among male drivers ๐Ÿ“Š. According to data from the BPD, there were 237 reported cases of road rage in Boston last year alone ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’ฅ.

And let's not forget about animal cruelty laws ๐Ÿ•... Did you know that only like 5% of animals involved in crimes are actually prosecuted? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Suffolk County has a decent record on this, though - they've had a 75% conviction rate for animal cruelty cases since 2018 ๐Ÿ“Š.

The fact that William Haney was able to evade the police for so long is just another stat I'm glad we have access to ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ... The Boston PD responded in under 30 minutes, and they were able to track down the vehicle using a surveillance camera. Maybe we should get more cameras installed on roads like that? ๐Ÿ“น Anyway, I'm all for justice being served ๐Ÿ’ฏ, but you can't help but wonder what led Haney down this dark path...

OMG, what a crazy thing ๐Ÿคฏ! I mean, can you even imagine hitting someone like that just because they were walking their dog? The guy was an art collector, for crying out loud! He must have had some amazing pieces in his collection. And it's not just the fact that he killed him and hurt his poor pup ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ˜”... it's like, what kind of person does that?

I think Haney needs to take responsibility for his actions right now. The charges are serious, so I hope he gets the help he needs. But at the same time, it's just not okay to go around hurting innocent people and animals. The museum is right to honor Axelrod's legacy by showcasing all those amazing Black artists... that's what we need more of! Art can bring people together, you know? ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ’–

just crazy what some people can do ๐Ÿคฏ like how could someone just hurt innocent ppl & their pets ?? it's just not right ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ i mean john axelrod was a respected figure in the art world and this guy Haney is out there hurting him & his dog?? it's like something out of a movie or somethin ๐Ÿ˜ฑ and now haney's facing charges that could put him away for life ๐Ÿš” i hope he gets what's coming to him but at the same time, we gotta make sure our justice system is doing its job ๐Ÿ’ฏ and hopefully the art community can come together to support john's family ๐Ÿ‘ช

you know what's wild, i was at the zoo last weekend and saw this adorable little penguin waddling around ๐Ÿง it reminded me of how some people need to take a break from driving for like an hour just to enjoy the view lol! anyway, back to this art collector guy... 70 works by black artists? that's amazing! i'm no art expert but even i can appreciate good taste ๐Ÿ˜Š i wonder what his favorite piece is, maybe it's something that could've inspired him to leave a better comment on one of my old reddit posts ๐Ÿคฃ

omg this guy is so done ๐Ÿ˜ฑ he didn't even think about what his actions would do to innocent ppl & their pets ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ˜” i mean john axelrod was a big deal in the art world and everyone loved him ๐Ÿ’• it's just crazy that some people can be so heartless ๐Ÿ’” anyway, hopefully justice will be served and haney gets the time he deserves โฐ

๐Ÿ˜” This incident is a stark reminder of the alarming rise in vehicular aggression and animal welfare abuse ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ˜ข. The fact that William Haney's reckless actions resulted in not only the loss of a renowned art collector's life, but also the tragic demise of his loyal canine companion, is nothing short of devastating ๐Ÿ’”.

It's disconcerting to consider the intersectionality of art and human lives, where an individual's creative expression can coexist with their capacity for cruelty ๐Ÿคฏ. The fact that Axelrod was not only a respected figure in the art community but also an avid supporter of promoting Black artists is a poignant reminder of his compassion and empathy โค๏ธ.

The naming of a gallery at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston in Axelrod's honor serves as a fitting tribute to his legacy, while also underscoring the importance of acknowledging and celebrating the positive contributions of individuals like him ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ’ซ.

๐Ÿค• this is just devastating... i mean can you even imagine someone being so heartless? hitting some poor old guy and his dog just for kicks... i was driving in boston last year and saw that mall on commonwealth avenue it's always been a pretty safe area but something like this makes you feel uneasy ๐Ÿšจ. art collector john axelrod sounds like such an important figure, loved by the community and all... i can only imagine how his family is feeling right now ๐Ÿ˜”. hope he gets a fair trial and justice is served ๐Ÿคž
