X Users Given Final Warning: Re-Enroll Security Keys by November 10 or Risk Account Lockout
A stern notice has been sent to users who rely on hardware security keys for two-factor authentication (2FA) on the X social network. As of last week, a notification from the X Safety account informed users that they must re-enroll their existing security key by November 10 in order to continue accessing their accounts.
The warning applies specifically to YubiKeys and passkeys, but does not affect other 2FA authenticator apps such as Microsoft Authenticator or Authy. If users fail to re-enroll their affected keys before the deadline, their accounts will be locked until they either complete the re-enrollment process, switch to a different 2FA method, or decide not to use 2FA altogether.
To avoid any inconvenience, X advises its users to take immediate action and re-enroll their security key. The process is simple: head to Settings in the X app, then click "Security and account access" and "Manage Passkeys" within the Security section. Users can either re-enroll their existing security key or enroll a new one.
It's worth noting that if users choose to enroll a new security key, any other existing security keys will stop working unless they are also re-enrolled. The deadline for re-enrollment is November 10, so users have only a limited time to take action and ensure that their accounts remain accessible.
The changes come as part of X's ongoing efforts to transition the social network to its new platform, which was rebranded from Twitter in 2023. Last year, X fully transitioned the social network's core systems to X.com, effectively leaving behind the iconic blue bird logo that once symbolized the platform.
