Renovated MOCAD announces reopening date with exhibitions by Detroit artists - Detroit Metro Times

Detroit's Cultural Institution Returns to the Public Eye as MOCAD Announces Grand Reopening.

Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) is set to reopen its doors on April 25th after months of renovation work, marking a significant milestone in its 20-year history. The museum is celebrating this occasion with three new exhibitions showcasing works by notable Detroit-area artists, while also honoring the late Julia Reyes Taubman, co-founder of MOCAD.

In an effort to recognize Detroit's artistic community and mark the beginning of its 20th anniversary year, MOCAD has chosen a diverse range of artists. Olayami Dabls, known for his visionairy works as seen in the outdoor art installation "Detroit Cosmologies", will be featured alongside fiber artist Carole Harris, whose body of work spans over four decades and was first exhibited at Gallery 7 in 1977. Martha Mysko, a contemporary painter, will also have her first solo exhibition at the museum.

"This milestone is an opportunity to reflect on MOCAD's history as a space for radical artmaking, experimentation, and civic engagement," said Jova Lynne, co-director of MOCAD. "It's a season that embodies our belief that art is inseparable from community reflection and care."

The renovation project at the museum includes infrastructure upgrades and a new public window display, designed to provide an enhanced viewing experience for visitors.

MOCAD's grand reopening will take place on April 25th, marking the beginning of its 20-year anniversary year. The museum invites the public to explore the latest works by Detroit artists and celebrate this milestone in its history.

OMG, I'm so down for MOCAD's comeback! 🀩 Did you know that the arts scene in Detroit has seen a 25% growth since 2020? πŸ“ˆ It's crazy to think about how far it's come, and this grand reopening is just the beginning. The new exhibitions are gonna be lit, btw - have you heard of Olayami Dabls' "Detroit Cosmologies" art installation? 🌠 He's got a whole cult following for that one! 😎 And Carole Harris's work? Iconic, fam! πŸ‘‘

Stats alert: 70% of MOCAD's visitors come from Michigan, while 30% are from other states. That tells me the museum is doing something right πŸ™Œ They're not just serving the local community, but also attracting folks from afar.

The renovation project was a $10 million investment and included some sweet upgrades like new public windows and LED lighting. πŸ’‘ The museum's website says they expect an increase of 15% in ticket sales due to these renovations. That's some serious ROI, if you ask me! πŸ€‘

I've got to wonder, though: what's been going on in Detroit's art scene while MOCAD was closed for renovations? πŸ€” Has there been any notable new galleries or artists popping up? And how do you think this grand reopening is going to attract even more visitors and support the local art community? πŸ“ˆπŸ’¬

I don't know if I'm getting all hyped for this... MOCAD's reopening is cool and all, but let's be real, it's just a renovation πŸ€”. A new solo exhibition by Martha Mysko might not even make it to the next 2 years before people forget about it 😐. And don't even get me started on the outdoor installation "Detroit Cosmologies"... sounds like some art student's Instagram post πŸ“Έ. I mean, what's next? An "art experience" at a new coffee shop in Corktown? β˜•οΈ. Give me a break!

Ugh, I'm not buying it πŸ€”... They're just trying to spin a new image, like they've actually improved anything πŸ˜’. Renovation work is always a massive undertaking, so I'm sure there's gotta be some skeletons in the closet they're not telling us about πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™€οΈ. And what's with the grand reopening on April 25th? Just trying to distract us from all the financial troubles MOCAD must have faced in the first place πŸ’Έ... and don't even get me started on the whole "community reflection and care" vibe - sounds like just a bunch of corporate speak πŸ“’.
