FX Lands 'Far Cry' Franchise for New Anthology Series, Starring Rob McElhenney
A new TV series based on the popular "Far Cry" video game franchise is heading to FX. The anthology show will be available on Hulu and Disney+, with a different cast, setting, and plot line each season, inspired by the Ubisoft-produced format.
Rob Mac, a South Philly native who recently changed his last name from McElhenney, is set to co-create, executive produce, and star in the series. He'll collaborate with Emmy Award-winning creator, writer, and producer Noah Hawley, who has worked extensively with FX on shows like "Fargo" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." Mac also appeared in Hawley's Apple TV comedy series "Mythic Quest."
Hawley expressed excitement about working with Mac, stating that Ubisoft has entrusted them with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. The FX team continues to support Mac, he said.
This new adaptation follows a growing trend of acclaimed video games being adapted for television, including HBO's "The Last of Us," Netflix's "Arcane," Amazon Prime's "Fallout" and Peacock's "Twisted Metal."
The "Far Cry" franchise has spawned nine games and expansion packs between 2008 and 2021, attracting over 100 million unique players. Each game features a different protagonist battling various enemies in settings ranging from the Stone Age to post-apocalyptic alternate realities.
Actors Giancarlo Esposito of "Breaking Bad" and Michael Mando from "Better Call Saul" have appeared in roles for the franchise in the past. The plot and timeline details for the TV adaptation remain under wraps, but Mac will reportedly play freelance mariner Jack Carver, who finds himself fighting to survive on a dangerous island paradise.
Hawley praised the anthology format, saying it allows them to create a big action show that can change each year while exploring humanity through "this complex and chaotic lens." He's looking forward to partnering with Mac and bringing their shared irreverent and ambitious sensibility to the screen.
