Ryan Lowe: Wigan Athletic sack head coach after 11 months in charge

Wigan Athletic have confirmed that head coach Ryan Lowe will leave the club after 11 months in charge. The decision comes following a dismal 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Peterborough United on Saturday, which has seen Wigan drop to the relegation zone.

The Latics had been struggling in recent form, winning just one game out of their last 10 League One fixtures, and have now fallen to 22nd place with two points from safety after 29 matches. Lowe, who was appointed as manager in March 2025 on a three-and-a-half-year contract, won only 12 games in his 49-match tenure.

The club has announced that Glenn Whelan and Graham Barrow will take charge of the first team on an interim basis while they work to identify and appoint a new head coach. Wigan Athletic have also thanked Lowe for his efforts and wished him all the best for the future.

Lowe's departure marks the latest in a series of changes at the club, which had previously parted ways with manager Shaun Maloney. Despite guiding the team to a 15th-placed finish in the table last season, Wigan's form soon tailed off after winning on the opening day of this season, securing just three victories from 17 matches between late August and late November.

The club will now look to stabilize their position in the relegation zone as they face upcoming fixtures against Reading at home and Arsenal in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

πŸ€•πŸ† Another football team bites the dust 🏈😒 Wigan Athletic's 11-month stint with Ryan Lowe was a disaster πŸ’” They got thrashed by Peterborough United like, what even is that? 😲 And now they're relegated already... not even close to being safe πŸ”’. Poor guys need some serious turning around πŸ”„ and I'm worried it won't be enough... what's next for the club? πŸ€”πŸ˜Ÿ

omg wigan athletic is like totally tanking this season 🀯 6-1 thrashing is insane!!! can't believe they're already relegated lol πŸ˜‚ Ryan Lowe's gotta go, his record is not impressing anyone πŸ“‰ needs a major overhaul, new coach ASAP pls ⏱️ Graham Barrow & Glenn Whelan better bring their A-game to stabilize the team πŸš€ gotta root for Wigan Athletic to make a comeback πŸ’ͺ FA Cup 4th round against Arsenal is gonna be lit πŸ”₯

πŸ€” I feel bad for Lowe, he got a tough hand from day one, and that 6-1 thrashing was a nightmare. I mean, who wouldn't struggle when you're facing top teams? 😩 They had to drop him so quick, I'm worried it's gonna be hard to find someone to turn the ship around. 🚒 I hope Whelan & Barrow can bring some stability and help Wigan get back on track. πŸ’ͺ

omg wigan athletic is going down 🚨😱 i cant believe they got thrashed 6-1 by peterborough united lol what a disaster! ryan lowe must be feeling pretty crummy right now, only won 12 games in his 49 match stint πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ guess its back to the drawing board for them now πŸ‘‹ glenn whelan and graham barrow are taking over on an interim basis, fingers crossed they can turn things around πŸ’ͺ gotta give credit to wigan for trying tho, those changes since shaun maloney left did seem like a good move πŸ€”

just another season, another set of drama for wigan athletic πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ... think they need a complete overhaul not just a new head coach, maybe bring in someone who's actually won some games lately πŸ˜… their relegation zone struggles are getting old, hope glenn whelan and graham barrow can sort them out, but gotta wonder if the club is even ready for promotion πŸ€”

Ugh, another football manager bites the dust πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ! I mean, 6-1 thrashing is just insane. Can't imagine how demoralizing it must be for the players to get smashed like that 😩. And now they're scrambling around trying to find a new head coach... meanwhile, Wigan's still stuck in the relegation zone πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. Not exactly the most reassuring start to the year πŸ“†. What's with all these changes at the club? It feels like they're just throwing money at the problem without solving it πŸ’Έ. Guess we'll have to wait and see if Glenn Whelan and Graham Barrow can turn things around πŸ‘€...

I'm shocked that Ryan Lowe's departure wasn't sooner 🀯. I mean, 11 months is still a decent chunk of time, especially considering how poorly he's been performing on the pitch. The fact that Wigan Athletic has already dropped to 22nd place with only two points from safety is a massive indictment of his tactics and leadership.

I think it's great that Glenn Whelan and Graham Barrow are taking charge of the first team for now πŸ™Œ. At least we know they'll be making some much-needed changes, even if they don't have a clue what they're doing yet πŸ˜‚. And let's be real, Wigan Athletic is probably better off without Lowe, who seems to have been holding them back since day one ⏰.

As for the relegation zone, I think it's all just part of the club's "growth process" πŸ€ͺ. They need to take a hard look at themselves and figure out what went wrong under Lowe. But hey, at least they're trying to make a change πŸ’ͺ. Bring on the interim period and let's see if Whelan and Barrow can turn things around! πŸ‘Š

Wow 🀯, it's like, you can tell when a team is struggling, right? They're already on thin ice after getting thrashed by Peterborough United 😳. And 6-1? That's just brutal. I'm surprised Ryan Lowe lasted as long as he did, 11 months is not bad but considering they were so down in form, it was bound to happen. Now the club needs to figure out who's gonna come in and turn things around πŸ€”.
