Sleeping Beauty review – York's pun-packed crowd-pleaser has a double helping of fairy dust

The York Theatre Royal's latest production, Sleeping Beauty, is a crowd-pleasing treat that effortlessly charms audiences with its silly antics and familiar set pieces. Now in its fifth year, the show has settled into a reliable formula, thanks to veteran panto expert Paul Hendy at the helm as writer-producer.

This festive offering is tailor-made for families and features an array of delightful touches that have become synonymous with pantomime, from the infamous "slop scene" to the ghostly bench. The show also boasts a string of hilarious one-liners and jokes that never fail to elicit giggles, particularly courtesy of Dame Nurse Nellie, expertly played by Robin Simpson.

The supporting cast shines in their respective roles, with Tommy Carmichael delivering standout work as Jangles, the Buttons-style character, and an amusing double act between CBeebies' Jennie Dale and musical theatre veteran Jocasta Almgill as the good and bad fairies. However, this year's show seems to lack a bit of that distinctive local flavor that makes pantomime truly special – perhaps it's just been too familiar for its own good.

Despite this minor misstep, Sleeping Beauty remains an excellent choice for families and fans of classic fairy tales, offering plenty of laughs and entertainment without ever feeling too formulaic. The show's enduring popularity is a testament to the creative team's ability to craft a crowd-pleasing production that always brings the house down – albeit with slightly less zing this year than in previous iterations.

OMG u gotta see sleeping beauty at york theatre royal!! 🤩 i just watched it w/ my fam & we all loved it!!! paul hendy is like a genius or something, he knows how 2 make pantomime magic happen! 😍 the cast is so talented esp robin simpson as dame nurse nellie, she's like the queen of silly jokes 🤣 i also luv the new additions this year, although some ppl say it feels a bit samey... but honestly, who needs change when u got a classic fairy tale like sleeping beauty? 😊

idk about this panto being just "a crowd-pleaser treat"... feels like they're phoning it in? where's the original story being told here? all I see is a bunch of familiar tropes strung together 🤔. and 5 years in, you can't even tell it's still the same production? what happened to that "distinctive local flavor"? seems like paul hendy just went for comfort food instead of something new & exciting 🍰👎

I'm lovin' this pantomime season and Sleeping Beauty at York Theatre Royal is defo worth checkin' out 😊! Paul Hendy's got it right, it's like a reliable old favourite - not reinventin' the wheel but knowin' what works. The cast is top-notch, especialy Robin Simpson as Dame Nurse Nellie 🤣. But, I gotta agree, this year feels a tad less special than the others... think they might've lost that magic that makes pantomime really, really special 🤔. Still, it's a laugh-out-loud good time and perfect for families - just don't expect too much in terms of originality 🙃

I think they're right on point about it lacking that local flavor, but still it's still so much fun 🤣. I mean, who doesn't love a good panto? The cast does an amazing job, especially Dame Nurse Nellie, she's literally got me dying every time! 😂 And the supporting cast is top notch too, Tommy Carmichael as Jangles is pure gold 💯. It's just that you can tell it's been done before and they're not really trying to shake things up too much. Still, it's a classic for a reason, right? 👏

😊 I mean, what's wrong with playing it safe? I know it's panto and people expect a certain level of silliness, but can't we push the boundaries a bit more? The show is still really fun and family-friendly, don't get me wrong! But I feel like they're relying too much on familiar jokes and gags that just work because they're old. It would be awesome if they could mix it up a bit and add some new twists to keep things fresh. 🤔

I mean, it's nice that they're still doing Sleeping Beauty every year... I guess you can't go wrong with the classics 😊. But, um, don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's all just peachy for families and stuff. The only thing is, it's like, five years now and it's starting to feel a bit... predictable? 🙃. And I know some people might say that's what makes it "reliable", but honestly, can't they just mix it up a bit? Like, maybe add some new twists or something? But no, instead we get the same old slapstick humor and cheesy jokes again 🤣. Still, I'm sure it'll be fine for the kiddos... 👶.

I saw this pantomime last yr 😊 and it was defo fun, but its like they didnt wanna be original anymore 🤔. The usual panto bits were there, but I felt like something was missin'. Still, its a great show for fams & kids, gets the giggle goin' 😂. 👏

🤔 I dunno, I love pantomime shows and all, but I think they're getting a bit same-old-same-old. The one about Sleeping Beauty sounds like it's got some funny bits, but it's not really original or anything. They've had it for 5 years now and still people are coming to see it? 🤑 I guess if you're a fan of classic fairy tales, it's probably still gonna be a good show, but if you're looking for something new and exciting, there might be other options out there.

I'm not sure if 5th year is good enough 🤔, they should really try new things, maybe not abandon their formula completely tho 😊. I loved Dame Nurse Nellie's lines tho, Robin Simpson is hilarious! 👏 But yeah, it's still a great show for families and panto fans. Maybe they just need to add some more twists to keep it fresh? 😅

I'm kinda underwhelmed by Sleeping Beauty at York Theatre Royal 🤔. Don't get me wrong, it's still a great show for families and all that jazz 💃. But after five years, I expected something more innovative than just the same old formula. I mean, Paul Hendy is like a pantomime mastermind or whatever 😎. Still, I loved Dame Nurse Nellie – Robin Simpson's dry wit had me dying over here 🤣. And that ghostly bench tho! What's not to love about a show with all that slapstick humor and wacky characters? Maybe I'm just getting too used to the pantomime vibes, but it felt like this year's show was missing something special...
