South Africa to investigate 'mysterious' arrival of 153 Palestinians on plane

South African authorities are launching an investigation into a mysterious arrival of 153 Palestinians who were held on a charter plane at Johannesburg's OR Tambo international airport for 12 hours without proper documentation.

The group, believed to be from Gaza, arrived in South Africa without departure stamps, return tickets, or accommodation arrangements. Initially denied entry due to lack of paperwork, the passengers were later cleared for entry under a standard 90-day visa exemption after humanitarian intervention by a local nonprofit organization.

The origins of the Palestinians' journey remain unclear, and details about their intended destination are also scarce. It is believed that some had visas for neighboring countries but were eventually allowed to leave for those destinations.

A pastor who accompanied the passengers during their time on the plane described the conditions as "extremely hot" with children crying out in distress. The incident has raised questions about South Africa's approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its handling of asylum seekers.

The country, which has a history of supporting the Palestinian cause, is now facing criticism for its slow response to the situation. Some have expressed concerns over national security, while others see the government's actions as inconsistent with its proclaimed values.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Palestinians' arrival is underway, with officials vowing to determine the origins of their journey and any potential irregularities in their travel arrangements.

idk about this, i mean... how can u expect everyone 2 follow rules when ur system r so complicated? 🤔 they came in w/o docs, like wot's the worst dat cn happen? but on da other hand, its not right 4 ppl 2 b held in airport 4 12 hours w/ no food or drink... that's just cruel 😓. & u gotta ask y gr8 nrs like SA r so quick 2 jump 2 humanitarian intervention 🤦‍♂️. but at da same time, dont get me wrong, i think its pretty suspicious how they all ended up 2gthr... wot r dey really doing here?

This whole thing has got me thinking... I mean, what even is the criteria for getting a 90-day visa exemption? Is it just a blanket deal or are there some serious checks in place to make sure these people aren't up to something sketchy? And honestly, can't we just have one set of rules instead of two (or three, if you count the 'don't-ask-no-questions' route)?

I'm also kinda worried about the conditions on that plane - 12 hours without food or water? That's insane! Can we talk about accountability here? Like, who was in charge during that time and why did they not intervene sooner?

And I know some people are going to say it's just politics as usual, but at the end of the day, these guys were basically being held hostage on a plane with no clear plan for their next move. It raises all sorts of questions about how we treat vulnerable people in our society 🤔💡

this whole thing is so messed up 😕... these ppl were stuck on a plane for 12 hours without any documentation, can u imagine? and now they're being scrutinized like they did something wrong 🤔... South Africa's supposed to be all about supporting the Palestinian cause, but their response to this situation is super slow and lacks transparency 🕰️... what if some of these ppl were fleeing violence or persecution? shouldn't we be helping them out instead of questioning their intentions? 🤝 it's like they're being treated as refugees, not human beings with stories to tell 💔

🚨😷 honestly though, can't say i'm surprised by this one... so many ppl getting stuck in middle east conflicts 🤦‍♂️ it's like a never ending loop 🔄 153 ppl on a plane for 12 hrs without docs? that's just basic human decency right there 🙅‍♂️ and now they're trying to sweep it under the rug with some fancy investigation 🕵️‍♀️ meanwhile, kids were crying out in distress... just not cool 🤔

I'm curious about how South Africa can balance welcoming people from around the world with ensuring everyone follows the right procedures 🤔. 12 hours stuck on a plane without knowing what's going on is really harsh 😩. The fact that some had visas for other countries but got allowed to leave anyway makes me wonder if there was more to it than just humanitarian intervention 💸.

It's also weird how this incident has sparked debate about national security 🚫. I think it's safe to say we can trust people who come to South Africa with good intentions, right? 🤝 At the same time, we need to make sure everyone is playing by the rules 📜. Maybe there's a way to streamline the process without sacrificing compassion?

I'm totally baffled by this situation 🤯! Like, what's going on here? These people show up out of nowhere and suddenly they're allowed to stay for months just because some NGO stepped in? It's like the system got a slap on the wrist and suddenly everything is fine again. 🙄 I mean, if there were security concerns, wouldn't that have been addressed before they even landed?

And can we talk about how quickly they were cleared for entry? 12 hours from arrival to exemption? That's insane! It's like they were just waiting for a magic solution to make everything okay again. 🧙‍♀️ What if those people weren't who they claimed to be? We don't even know where they came from or what their intentions are.

South Africa has always prided itself on being a champion of human rights, but this incident raises some serious questions about its commitment to that cause. Shouldn't we be doing more to vet these kinds of situations before things get out of hand? 🤔

idk how SA couldve messed this up so badly. 153 ppl stuck on a plane for 12 hours without docs, and they're already getting a free pass cos some charity stepped in 🤷‍♂️. it's all about the PR at this point. what was the gov thinkin? do a quick search for any passports or visas that might've been mishandled? come on SA, step up ur game 💁‍♂️. also, i feel bad for those kids who were cryin on that plane 🤕. when will they get the help they need? 🤗

I don’t usually comment but this whole situation has got me thinking... I mean, 153 people stuck on a plane for 12 hours without papers? That's crazy! 🤯 And then they're just let off the hook because some local non-profit intervened? It feels like there was a huge gap in communication or maybe even a cover-up. I don’t know what to make of it but it does seem suspicious that they were able to get on a plane and not have any proper documentation.

And another thing, what kind of system allows people to just show up at an airport without checking them in first? It seems like a huge security risk. 🤔 But I guess that's the thing with asylum seekers – you never know where they're coming from or why they're fleeing their home countries. Maybe there’s more to this story than we know, but for now it just feels weird.

It’s also interesting that people are already talking about how it reflects on South Africa's stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Like, I get it, the country has a history of supporting the Palestinian cause, but doesn’t that mean they should be looking out for anyone who needs help? 🤷‍♀️ It’s like they say, you can only judge someone by their actions...

Wow 😮 - I mean can u imagine being on a plane for 12 hours with no idea where u r going or how u got there?! The conditions sounded super harsh especially w/ kids crying out in distress 🤕.

Interesting how the government is now facing criticism for its response to the situation, esp considering South Africa's history of supporting the Palestinian cause. It raises questions about national security vs human rights 🤝

The fact that a local nonprofit organization stepped in to help clear the passengers for entry shows that there are still good ppl doing good things out there ❤️

This whole thing is a bit weird 🤔. I mean, can you imagine being stuck on a plane for 12 hours without knowing where you're going or what's happening next? 😱 The conditions described by that pastor are honestly terrifying, especially with kids crying out in distress. It's like they were just left hanging there, not even told why they weren't allowed to leave.

I'm also kinda puzzled about the whole visa situation. If some of them had visas for neighboring countries but were eventually cleared to leave for those destinations, how did that work? 🤷‍♂️ And what does it say about our country's approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict if we're still grappling with questions like this?

I think the government needs to get its facts straight and figure out what went wrong here. It's not just about national security or consistency, it's about basic human decency 🌎. We need to make sure these people were treated with respect and dignity, even if their journey was a mess. Let's see how this investigation goes and hope we can learn something from this crazy situation 😅

man, this story is wild 🤯 153 ppl stuck on a plane for 12 hours without knowing where they're goin or how they got there? that's some crazy stuff 🚨 meanwhile, some good Samaritan nonprofit shows up and helps them out? sounds like South Africa's got its heart in the right place ❤️ but yeah, it raises some red flags about how they handled the situation - slow response, lack of documentation... what were they thinkin? 😒 hope this investigation gets to the bottom of things 🕵️‍♀️

🤔 This whole thing just reeks of a mess waiting to happen... I mean, 153 people just showing up outta nowhere without basic documents? It's like they were hoping to fly under the radar or something. And now everyone's all like "oh no, what about national security?" Yeah, that's exactly what this is - a national security nightmare. 🚨 I'm not buying the humanitarian angle either... sounds like some fancy PR spin to me.

And let's be real, if the government's so concerned about supporting the Palestinian cause, then why did it take them 12 hours to figure out how to process these people? That's just lazy. 😴 And what about the fact that they had visas for other countries but were allowed to leave? That's some suspicious behavior right there.

I'm gonna keep an eye on this investigation and see where it goes... I've got a bad feeling about this 🤷‍♂️

🤔 Africans hosting more refugees than usual, time to step up our game 🚨. South Africa's got a rep for being open to Palestinian causes, now they need to show they're willing to help those in need too 💖.

🤔 What's going on here?! South Africa is supposed to be all about equality and human rights, but now they're getting roasted for treating these Palestinian travelers like they're invisible. I mean, 12 hours stuck on a plane without food or water? That's not just unacceptable, it's inhumane. And what's with the 'standard' 90-day visa exemption? Sounds like a convenient cop-out to me 🙄.

I'm all for supporting the Palestinian cause, but this whole situation reeks of hypocrisy. If our government is really committed to helping those in need, they should be doing more than just clearing people for entry based on some 'humanitarian intervention'. What about accountability? Where's the transparency? It's like they're hoping no one notices, but we can't ignore this kind of thing. We should be pushing for answers, not just a quick fix 💡

this news is crazy 🤯, i mean, 153 ppl just show up at airport w no papers & they get let through? that's wild 🌪️. the govts response to this situation is also super slow, i get it, they're trying to figure out what happened but some ppl might be worried about national security and stuff 😬. and i dont blame 'em, but at the same time, its like, whats wrong w welcoming ppl in need? south africa has a rep for being all about that human rights life 💖, so it would be dope if they could figure out what went down & make things right 🤞

omg this is crazy 🤯 153 ppl just chillin on a plane for 12 hours without docs? like what was happenin on that flight 🚫🛬 anyway, it's weird they were denied entry then cleared cuz of some nonprofit 🤝 but seriously, how do ppl even get to SA w/o proper docs? 😕 and btw, some ppl are saying it's a reflection of SA's stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict 🤔 which is like super complex 🤯

omg this is gonna be a long one... so like i was reading about these 153 palestinians who showed up at the airport without any paperwork and no one knows where they came from or where they're going? and then some random pastor guy has to swoop in and save the day with his non-profit org 🙄. it's like, i get that south africa is trying to be all welcoming and stuff, but c'mon guys, you gotta do better than this. 12 hours on a plane without any snacks or human rights? that's just cruel.

and now the gov't is getting all defensive about how they handled the situation, saying it's not their fault they were denied entry in the first place... well, yeah okay, but shouldn't you guys have had some basic systems in place to deal with situations like this instead of waiting for some random pastor to step in? and btw, what's up with the 90-day visa exemption thingy? is that a new rule or did they just make it up on the spot? 🤷‍♀️

so like i'm no expert but it seems crazy that these people just showed up at the airport without a care in the world and then some good samaritan comes along and saves them lol what's next gonna be people just wandering into SA with no ID? 🤔 they need to figure out how this happened and make sure it doesn't happen again, but on the other hand i get why ppl are questioning it - SA does have a rep for supporting palestine so maybe that played a role in all of this...anyway gotta stay tuned to see what the investigation turns up 📰
