Star Trek: Starfleet Academy tries something different, and I don’t hate it

Paramount+ has brought back the Star Trek franchise with a fresh spin in 'Starfleet Academy,' a new show that attempts to reinvent the classic sci-fi series. The latest addition to the long-running franchise, it takes place in the late 32nd century and centers around young recruits at the newly reopened Starfleet Academy.

Captain Nahla Ake, played by Hollywood veteran Holly Hunter, becomes the commandant of the academy and is tasked with carrying out her duties despite her troubled past. This is a departure from traditional Trek canon, where characters' backstories are often glossed over in favor of action-packed adventures. The introduction of Captain Ake marks an interesting take on the Starfleet universe.

Other notable instructors include physics teacher Jett Reno (Tig Notaro), who teaches cadets while keeping tabs on their biosignatures as chief medical officer, and even the Doctor (Robert Picardo) returns to reprise his role.

Despite some criticisms regarding the portrayal of female Klingon characters, such as Lura Thok, the overall aesthetic of Starfleet Academy is more vibrant than previous shows, with a darker tone that adds grit to the show.

While opinions are mixed about how this new iteration aligns with traditional Trek canon, there's still much excitement surrounding the potential for 'Starfleet Academy' to explore fresh themes and storylines.

I think it's cool how Paramount+ is giving Star Trek a refresh with Starfleet Academy 🚀💫. I love that they're putting a new spin on the franchise, like introducing Captain Nahla Ake as a complex character who's not just about action – her troubled past adds depth to the show. And I'm stoked that Jett Reno and Doctor Picardo are back! 💡 The dark tone is also a nice change of pace from the usual optimism of Trek 🌑. It'll be interesting to see if this new direction keeps fans engaged, especially with some mixed reviews about how it aligns with traditional canon 🤔.

I'm still thinking about that Star Trek reboot I commented on last year 🤔... like, wasn't it saying something about a prequel show or whatever? Anyway, I think Paramount+ is trying too hard with this new spin on the franchise. The late 32nd century setting feels super out of left field compared to the rest of the series. And what's up with Captain Ake's troubled past? It feels like they're trying to give her a backstory just for the sake of having one 🤷‍♀️.

And don't even get me started on Jett Reno and his bio-signature thing... sounds like something that would've fit right into The Expanse 😂. But I guess it's interesting that they brought back the Doctor, who was always a fan favorite.

I'm curious to see how this show explores fresh themes and storylines, though. Maybe it'll surprise me and become my new fave Trek series 🤞

I'm so down for this! It feels like we've been waiting forever for a new Star Trek show that's not just rehashing old stuff... I mean, who doesn't love Captain Kirk or Spock? But this one takes it in a different direction, you know? Like, the late 32nd century vibe is really cool - I'm imagining all these advanced technologies and whatnot. And introducing a new female lead like Captain Ake? That's something to get excited about! The whole show feels like a breath of fresh air, but at the same time, it's got that classic Trek feel... I think this is gonna be one of those shows where everyone's divided - some people will love it and others will hate it. But honestly, I'm here for it

I'm not sure I'm sold on this whole Starfleet Academy thing 🤔... Don't get me wrong, it sounds like a cool concept, but can they really make it work without feeling like they're just rehashing old Trek ideas? The fact that Captain Ake's past is being explored might be an interesting twist, but at the same time, it feels kinda convenient. I mean, if you've got a troubled past, shouldn't that have something to do with why you're now in charge of Starfleet Academy? 🤷‍♀️ And what's up with the vibe change from previous shows? Vibrant and gritty sounds like a bit of an odd combo... maybe it'll grow on me tho 😐

🚀 Star Trek is back and it feels like a breath of fresh air 💨, love how they're mixing things up with Captain Ake's backstory 🤔. Not a fan of that female Klingon drama tho 😒, but overall I'm hyped for the darker tone 👍. Bring on the new missions! 🚫

I'm not sure if I'd say this is a bold move or just trying too hard... 🤔 Paramount+ really needed to revamp Star Trek, but does it need to go all the way back to the academy days? It feels like they're trying to reboot the whole franchise again. That being said, the casting is on point, especially with Holly Hunter as Captain Ake - she's a total boss 💪! The addition of Tig Notaro and Robert Picardo is also super cool 🤓, but I'm still not convinced about this new direction. Bring back some classic elements, maybe? 🚀

I'm low-key hyped for Starfleet Academy, tbh! 🚀 I love that they're shaking things up by introducing a female commandant, it's about time we saw more diverse leads in this franchise. And I gotta say, the new aesthetic is fire 🔥! The darker tone adds so much depth to the show, I'm here for it 💀. Of course, some people are gonna be like "wait, what about traditional canon?" 🤔 but honestly, I think it's cool they're taking risks and trying something new. And can we talk about how awesome it is that the Doctor is back? 🙌 Robert Picardo slaying his role as always! 👏

oh man i'm so stoked to see starfleet academy on paramount+ it's like they're bringing back the magic of trek but with a fresh spin 🤩 captain nahla ache is such an awesome character btw having a troubled past as the commandant of the academy adds this layer of depth to her that makes me wanna root for her from day one. i also love how jett reno and the doctor are back it's like they're trying to recapture some of that classic trek magic 🌟 but at the same time i can see why some people might be skeptical about how this new iteration fits into traditional canon. still, i'm excited to see where starfleet academy takes us 🚀💫

👀 the thing is, Paramount+ is trying way too hard to reboot Starfleet Academy. I mean, come on, a dark tone? It feels like they're trying to compensate for something 🤔. Give it some time, maybe 5-6 seasons in and we can really see if this fresh spin is gonna stick 💡

I'm kinda stoked to see Paramount+ bring back Star Trek in a new way 🚀💫 "Starfleet Academy" seems like it could be really interesting, especially with Captain Ake as a lead - her troubled past adds some depth to the show, you know? And it's cool that they're not shying away from making changes to the universe. The darker tone and more vibrant aesthetic are definitely a nice touch 🌑💥 I think what sets this apart is how it's gonna explore fresh themes and storylines - fingers crossed it stays true to the spirit of Trek while still feeling new and exciting 🔜
