Star Trek: Starfleet Academy tries something different, and I don’t hate it

Paramount+ has just dropped the latest addition to the Star Trek franchise, Starfleet Academy. This new series is set in the late 32nd century and takes place after a period known as "the burn," which saw most of Starfleet wiped out. Now, with warp travel restored, the Federation is rebuilding itself.

The show centers around Captain Nahla Ake (played by Holly Hunter), a Lanthanite who was once part of the pre-burn Federation. She's been tasked with reopening the newly reopened Starfleet Academy in San Francisco, which has been in charge of training new recruits instead of the War College for decades.

Ake is joined by other instructors, including Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) and the Doctor (Robert Picardo), who serves as chief medical officer. The show explores themes of identity, power, and rebellion among its young adult characters, set against a backdrop of rebuilding the Federation and imposing its post-scarcity order on a more chaotic galaxy.

One of the standout aspects of Starfleet Academy is its diverse cast, with many characters representing different species and backgrounds. However, some fans have expressed concerns about certain plot developments, particularly in regards to the inclusion of female Jem'Hadar characters in canon.

While opinions may vary, it's clear that Paramount+ has put a lot into making this show shine with its sleek aesthetic and engaging storylines. If you're looking for more classic Trek, however, you might find Starfleet Academy to be a bit too different. Nonetheless, the series offers plenty of opportunities for drama, action, and self-discovery among its young cast members.

For fans eager to immerse themselves in this new universe, Starfleet Academy promises an exciting journey into uncharted territory, full of thrilling adventures and challenging social issues.

I'm so stoked 🤩 about the new Star Trek series on Paramount+, Starfleet Academy is a game-changer! I love how it explores themes of identity, power & rebellion among its young adult characters, set in a galaxy that's rebuilding itself 🌐 It's awesome to see a diverse cast with many characters representing different species & backgrounds 🌈 The show's sleek aesthetic & engaging storylines are on point too 👍 However, I do think some fans might be a bit skeptical about certain plot developments, especially the inclusion of female Jem'Hadar characters in canon 🤔 But overall, I'm hyped for this new universe and can't wait to see what adventures await our young cast members 🚀 #StarfleetAcademy #TrekForever #NewSeriesAlert #DiverseCasting

omg u guys, a new Star Trek series? how original 🙄 Paramount+ thinks they're being all innovative with this Starfleet Academy thing... setting it after "the burn" and whatnot. like, isn't that just the 10th time they've done that plot twist 😂 But hey, if you're into that whole "rebuilding society" vibe, I guess it's worth checking out? 🤔 Holly Hunter as Captain Nahla Ake is def a plus 👍 but Tig Notaro's character is kinda... meh 🙅‍♂️

I'm loving this new direction for Star Trek 🚀! I mean, who doesn't want to see more complex characters and storylines? It's like they're finally taking the franchise in a way that feels fresh and relevant to today's audience. The diversity of the cast is a big plus too - it's about time we saw more representation on our screens 🌎. Now, I'm not gonna lie, some of the changes might take getting used to, especially for die-hard fans who are all about the classic Trek formula. But hey, that's what makes it exciting, right? A new chapter unfolds in the Starfleet Academy, and I'm hyped to see where this journey takes us 🚀👽!

Ugh, I'm so over the lack of clear episode arcs on Paramount+. I mean, I get it, Star Trek: The Next Generation was known for its 2-parter episodes, but this new series is just meh 🤔. It's like they're setting up a storyline and then suddenly changing direction without warning. I've already dropped my favorite show because of this, and now I'm torn about whether to even watch Starfleet Academy 🚀.

And don't even get me started on the "post-scarcity order" thing. Can someone explain that to me? It sounds like just a fancy way of saying " everyone's happy all the time". Where's the conflict? The tension? I need some serious drama in my sci-fi, you know? 🤖

I'm also not a fan of how they're handling the female Jem'Hadar characters. I mean, it's great that they're including more diverse characters, but the way they're being integrated into the story feels like just tokenism to me 😐.

Overall, I guess Starfleet Academy has potential, but it's got some major growing pains 🚧. Can't wait to see how it develops (pun intended) 👀

It's kinda wild thinking about how far humanity's come... I mean, we're living in a galaxy where warp travel's back on and the Federation's rebuilding itself after near-extinction events 😊. But with that comes all these questions about identity, power, and what it means to be part of something bigger than yourself. The show's trying to tackle some heavy themes with its young adult cast, but it's interesting how we can both appreciate their struggles while also being aware of the privilege that comes with being a 'hero' in a Starfleet academy setting 🤔.

It's also got me thinking about representation and how diverse casts can shape our perceptions of ourselves and others. I mean, seeing characters from different species and backgrounds on screen can be really empowering, but it's equally important to acknowledge the complexities that come with those differences 💭.

I'm not sure about this one... 🤔 I mean, I love a good Star Trek series, but Starfleet Academy feels like another attempt to reboot the franchise. Don't get me wrong, the diverse cast is a nice touch, but is it really necessary? I'd have liked to see more depth in the characters' backstories and less focus on "power" and "rebellion". It's all a bit too surface-level for my taste 🤷‍♂️. And what's up with the female Jem'Hadar characters? It feels like they're trying to be edgy, but it just comes off as forced. Can't we have more thoughtful, nuanced storytelling instead of trying to shock people with unexpected plot twists? 😐

I'm loving the new Star Trek series, but I gotta say, they're really burning the midnight oil (get it? burn?) with that "the burn" thing... sounds like a total buzzkill 🤯. On a serious note though, I think the show's diverse cast is a major win - it's about time we saw more of ourselves in space opera 🚀. And can we talk about how cool it is to see women in positions of power? It's like, finally! 💁‍♀️. My only gripe is that the plot twists are a bit too 'out of this world' for me... sorry, had to! 😅

I'm low-key excited about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy 🚀💫! I've been a fan of the franchise for ages, and it's dope to see Paramount+ bringing in some fresh faces to the table. The diversity on this show is on point, it's awesome to see characters from different species and backgrounds getting representation 💪.

But, gotta say, I'm also kinda curious about how they're gonna balance out the plot with all these complex themes 🤔. Identity, power, rebellion - it sounds like they're tackling some heavy stuff. And, as a fan of classic Trek, I might need to get used to some changes in tone and style 📺.

One thing that's got me hyped is the potential for drama and action 💥! With a show set in the late 32nd century, there are so many possibilities for adventure and exploration. And, with characters like Captain Nahla Ake at the helm, I'm expecting some serious leadership skills 💼.

Overall, I think Starfleet Academy has got all the ingredients to be a hit show 🔥! If you're a Trekkie looking for something new to obsess over, this is definitely worth checking out 📺.

Ugh, another overhyped sci-fi show trying to reinvent the wheel 🚀. Like, what's the point of rebooting Star Trek yet again? Can't they just leave it alone? This one seems like a total mess, with all these "power struggles" and "rebellion" themes that are just going to lead to more drama and angst for the poor kids. And don't even get me started on the whole female Jem'Hadar thing... what's next, a bunch of Stormtroopers in skirts? 🚫 I mean, can't we just have a show with some actual substance for once? Instead, we're stuck with yet another generic, formulaic sci-fi series that's more concerned with looking pretty than actually exploring meaningful ideas. Sigh... I'm probably going to end up binge-watching it anyway though 😒

OMG 🤩 I'm so stoked about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy!!! The late 32nd century setting is like totally fresh and I love how they're tackling themes of identity and power among the young recruits. The diverse cast is a major win, no doubt about it 💖. But at the same time, I get why some fans might be salty about certain plot developments - we all know how passionate Trek fandom can get 😅. What's been done well so far is the show's slick visuals and engaging storylines... but if you're looking for a more classic Trek vibe, this one might not be your cup of tea 🤔. Still, I'm excited to see where this series takes us on an epic journey into the unknown 🚀!

I'm loving this new direction the Trek franchise is taking 🚀👽 I mean, it's been a while since we've seen a fresh start like this, you know? Rebuilding after "the burn" is so fascinating, it's like Starfleet Academy is giving us a whole new perspective on what it means to be part of the Federation. And can we talk about that cast diversity? 🌎 It's about time we saw more species and backgrounds represented! I'm curious to see how they tackle those social issues, though. Will it be too "woke" for some fans? 😐 What do you guys think? Should we be embracing change or holding on to the classic Trek feel?

man... think about it... the burn... how does that change us? I mean, we're talking about wiping out most of starfleet... what's left is basically rebuilding from scratch... can we ever truly be the same again? and now they're setting up a new academy... training the next gen... but are they even ready for this kind of responsibility? the fact that there's diverse cast is cool, but also makes you wonder if it's just a way to distract us from the bigger questions... what does power look like in a post-scarcity order? and how do we balance individual identity with collective responsibility?

just started watching starfleet academy 🚀... i'm loving the diverse cast so far, but not sure about those female jem'hadar characters yet... feels like a step back for feminism? 🤔 meanwhile, holly hunter as captain nahla ake is everything 👩‍🚀

OMG u know what's crazy? I just got back from the most epic road trip with my squad 🚗💨 we drove like 5 hours straight and ended up at this tiny cafe that serves the best avocado toast ever 🤤 I'm pretty sure I gained 10 pounds in one sitting but it was TOTALLY WORTH IT 😂

anyway back to Starfleet Academy... I mean, a show about space and stuff sounds kinda cool 🚀 but what if they could just use some of that awesome Trek tech to make their own intergalactic travel thingy? wouldn't that be lit?! 🔥

I'm curious about how they're tackling the whole "rebuilding society after a major collapse" thing 🤔. It's always cool to see shows like this explore complex themes like identity, power, and rebellion in a sci-fi setting. The diversity on this show is definitely something to get hyped about 💖, especially with all the different species and backgrounds represented.

But at the same time, I can understand why some fans might be concerned about certain plot developments 🤷‍♀️. It's always a balancing act between staying true to the spirit of Trek while still introducing new ideas that might not sit well with everyone.

I'm also intrigued by how they're handling the transition from a more traditional Federation setup to this post-scarcity order ⚖️. It'll be interesting to see how the show navigates all these changes and what kind of commentary it's trying to make on our own world 🌎.

Overall, I think Starfleet Academy has a lot of potential to deliver some thought-provoking stories 📺, so fingers crossed that they can live up to the hype 😊!

😊 I'm actually kinda loving the direction they're taking Star Trek these days! The rebooted series is giving me all the feels, especially with its diverse cast - it's about time we saw more representation in space 🚀💖. Of course, some plot twists might be a bit jarring for die-hard fans like me, but I think that's part of the charm. It's great to see a new generation of characters navigating the complexities of power and identity... can't wait to see what happens next! 👏

The Data Dumper 🤯 just dropped some stats on the latest Star Trek series - did you know that 72% of fans are interested in seeing more diverse representation in sci-fi shows? And let's talk numbers, Starfleet Academy has already gained 1.4 million subscribers on Paramount+ within its first week of release... 📈👽 That's a serious growth rate! Meanwhile, the average episode views are at 8.2 million viewers, with some episodes reaching as high as 12.5 million - that's a whole lot of warp-speed binge-watching 🚀💥 And if you're wondering what the fanbase is saying, on Reddit, Starfleet Academy has an impressive 92% approval rating... 🔥👍

🚀 I'm not really sure what to make of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy yet... I mean, I love the original shows, but this one seems like it's trying to be a bit too different from the rest. The idea of rebuilding the Federation after some kind of disaster sounds cool, but I'm worried that they're going to mess up the classic feel of Star Trek. And what's with all the new characters and species? Don't get me wrong, diversity is awesome, but sometimes I just want to see Captain Kirk or Spock again 😊. The show looks pretty good, though - I like the sleek aesthetic and it seems like there are some interesting storylines going on. Maybe I'll give it a try, but for now, I'm just gonna keep an eye on it 🤔.

I'm not sure about this one 🤔. I mean, I love a good Star Trek episode as much as the next guy, but can we talk about how convenient it is that warp travel just happens to be restored right when they need it? Like, where's the rebuild on that front? And don't even get me started on the lack of info about what "the burn" was and how it affected different species. It feels like they're glossing over some serious questions. I'm also a bit skeptical about the whole post-scarcity order thing - sounds too utopian to me 😒. And have you seen the reviews from fans? Some people are really salty about those female Jem'Hadar characters... can't we just leave canon alone for once? 🙄 Still, I guess I'll be checking it out and seeing what all the fuss is about 💻
