A stolen car driver caused a fiery rollover crash in Midtown Houston Thursday afternoon, leaving one police officer seriously injured. The vehicle, later identified as a reported stolen pickup truck, was spotted by two officers on Holman Street near Main, who attempted to stop it after recognizing the truck as reported stolen.
However, instead of pulling over, the driver accelerated and sped through two red lights on Travis Street at high speed. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the suspect's vehicle then colliding with another car carrying an SVU detective at a high rate of speed, sending the truck airborne and crashing into a building before catching fire.
The suspect managed to escape from the burning truck by climbing out through the back window and was later taken into custody. He is now facing felony charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, evading, and theft.
Fortunately, the detective who was hit in the collision is expected to be okay, despite being rushed to the hospital. The Houston Police Department has confirmed that one of its officers was involved in the crash, but their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Firefighters responded quickly to the scene, working to put out the flames and rescue those trapped inside the vehicle. The driver's motives for attempting to flee were not immediately clear.
