UK hit by severe flooding and travel disruption as Storm Chandra brings heavy rain and strong winds.
A red flood warning has been issued for the River Otter at Ottery St Mary in Devon following heavy rainfall brought about by Storm Chandra. Severe flooding is expected this morning, with flood water forecast to be deep and fast-flowing in areas such as Finnimore industrial estate, Thorne Farm Way estate, Luxtons Park, Otter Mill, and Tumbling Weir Way.
Emergency services and local authorities are working together to advise people in parts of the town under threat to evacuate their homes and move to safe locations. The Environment Agency has also issued a severe flood warning for the river, stating that it is forecast to be at its highest level on record.
Flood warnings have been issued across England, with nearly 200 alerts and almost 100 warnings in place. Heavy rain has fallen on already saturated ground, causing widespread disruption to roads and travel plans. The M48 Severn Crossing between England and Wales was closed due to strong winds, while high-sided vehicles were banned from the Humber Bridge.
Sections of roads in Dorset, Somerset, and east Devon have been closed due to flooding, including the A30 near Ottery St Mary, which is impassable due to standing water. Drivers are being warned not to attempt to drive through floodwater unless they are certain it's safe to do so.
National Highways has advised drivers to plan ahead and consider alternative routes, as conditions remain hazardous on many roads. Rail operators have also issued warnings about poor weather affecting services in south-west England until the end of the day.
The Met Office has forecasted severe gales in parts of Northern Ireland, with gusts of up to 75mph expected. Snow is also predicted for higher ground in some areas, causing blizzard-like conditions.
