Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Sam's Club Super Greens Powder Supplements
A growing number of people across the US have fallen ill with salmonella infections, tracing back to a tainted batch of supplements sold at Sam's Club stores nationwide and online. At least 11 individuals, including three hospitalized patients, have been confirmed to be infected.
The source of the outbreak was identified as contaminated moringa leaf powder used in Member's Mark Super Greens Powder Supplements. The tainted product was imported from an Indian supplier, Vallon Farm Direct in Jodhpur, India. Investigations revealed that state health officials collected and tested samples of the supplement taken from the homes of those who had become ill.
Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include severe diarrhea, vomiting, fever, dehydration, and stomach cramps. While most people recover within a week, severe cases can occur in vulnerable populations such as young children, older adults, or individuals with weakened immune systems, requiring hospitalization.
As a precautionary measure, the tainted supplements have been pulled from store shelves, and consumers are advised to discard them or return them for a refund. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have issued this recall notice in response to the outbreak.
It is essential for consumers to exercise caution when purchasing dietary supplements, especially those containing foreign-sourced ingredients. Moringa, while considered a nutritious plant with essential nutrients, can also pose health risks if contaminated or improperly processed.
