Surveillance footage shows suspect wanted for Roxborough High School vandalism, police say

Surveillance footage has revealed the suspect wanted for vandalizing Roxborough High School with racist and antisemitic graffiti. The images show a man approaching the school on Sunday morning, wearing a grey hooded jacket, pants, and carrying a backpack. His face was covered by an orange scarf as he walked towards Pechin Street at 5:25 am.

The footage captures the suspect's movements from Fountain Street to Ridge Avenue, where he was last seen heading in that direction. The vandalism included swastikas and derogatory racial slurs, which were removed shortly after the incident was reported to the police.

Roxborough High School Principal Kristin Williams Smalley has condemned the hate speech, urging parents to have conversations with their children about the seriousness of such behavior. She emphasized that the school community is diverse and proud of its inclusivity.

Meanwhile, a message of welcome was conveyed by students returning to class on Monday. Community members also used chalk to write inclusive messages on the school's sidewalks, showcasing unity and solidarity in the face of hate.

Police are urging anyone with information about the suspect to come forward and report it to the Northwest Detective Division at (215) 686-3353. Anonymous tips can be made online or by texting 773847.

Ugh, this is just soooo sad πŸ€•... I mean, I know we've been here before, but it feels like every time something like this happens, we're right back at square one. Like, what's the point of even trying to have "conversations" with our kids about hate speech if they're still gonna find ways to spew it around? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I get that schools are places for learning, not just indoctrination... but still, can't we just try to be a little more nuanced about this stuff?

I did like what the principal said, though - "diverse and proud of its inclusivity" is exactly what we need more of, you know? πŸ™Œ And I love that the community came together with chalk messages on the sidewalk. That's some real hope for change, even if it's just a tiny step in the right direction.

But seriously, though... can't we do better than this? πŸ€” Can't we find ways to teach our kids about empathy and understanding instead of just trying to squish the hate away? I don't know, man... maybe I'm just too old for my own good πŸ˜‚.

omg u dont even know how infuriating this is lol the whole point of high school is supposed to be learning how to live w/ ppl from different backgrounds but some ppl r still tryin to spread hate like what's wrong w/ these kids???? the fact that they had to come together 2 cover up the swastikas with chalk messages is just...i cant even 🀯. the principal's response is on point tho, parents gotta be havin conversations w/ their kiddos about this kinda stuff ASAP. and btw, can we pls get some actual consequences for ppl who do this kind of hate speech? πŸš”πŸ’ͺ

Omg I'm still shook after seeing that surveillance footage 🀯... like who does something so vile & cowardly? The fact that he was wearing an orange scarf to hide his face is just so extra πŸ˜‚. And can you believe the swastikas and racial slurs on the school walls? It's just heartbreaking thinking about the kids who have to deal with this hate every day πŸ€•.

I'm all for people having tough conversations with their kids, but like, shouldn't we be teaching them how to be more empathetic and open-minded from a younger age too? πŸ€” I feel like we should be focusing on spreading love and kindness instead of perpetuating hate speech. Anyway, it's awesome to see the community come together like this 🌈... chalk messages on the sidewalk? That's just so sweet ❀️. If you have any info about the suspect, please DM me or something 🀫.

OMG u guys can't believe what's goin on in Philly rn?! This hate speech incident at Roxborough High School is straight up disturbing 🀯 The fact that someone would resort to swastikas and racist slurs is just so... sad πŸ€• What's even more amazing tho is the community coming together to show love & support for the school! Chalk messages on sidewalks? Welcome back messages from students? It's like, we're stronger together, fam πŸ’–

man... this just breaks my heart πŸ€•. what's the world coming to when someone feels emboldened enough to do something so hurtful and divisive? and now it seems like everyone else is fighting back with love and unity πŸ’–. but at what cost? are we teaching our kids that hate speech is acceptable or that they need to learn how to tolerate it? i guess the answer lies somewhere in between... we gotta have these conversations, yeah? about the importance of empathy and understanding... but also about standing up for ourselves and our values when we see them being disrespected. it's like, how do you balance being inclusive with setting boundaries? πŸ€”

I'm shocked that the school is now labeling the vandal as a "suspect" instead of saying who they actually are, you know? It's like, we're supposed to believe this person is just going to come forward and claim responsibility for their own hate crime. And what about the school's diversity and inclusivity messages? Is it just empty words if the administration isn't willing to take real action against these types of incidents? I mean, I've seen some pretty intense reactions from students showing solidarity with chalk messages, but let's not pretend like this is a long-term solution... πŸ€”πŸ‘€

So great that the school's diversity is so strong, I mean, a place for everyone... right? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ But seriously, can't we just have one peaceful morning without vandalism and hate speech? I guess it's nice that the students are using chalk to spread love, but wouldn't it be more effective if they were doing something productive with their time instead of "writing messages" on the sidewalk? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Still, gotta commend the principal for speaking up. Maybe someone should teach the suspect a thing or two about empathy... πŸ‘€

I saw those pics on social media and I'm like, totally disturbed man 🀯. Vandalizing a school with hate speech is so not cool. It's like, the ultimate buzzkill for everyone around it 🚫. And the fact that he wore an orange scarf to hide his face? That just shows how cowardly he is πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. But you know what's even more inspiring? The students and community members coming together to show support and inclusivity πŸ‘«. They're like, "No way, hate speech isn't welcome here!" And I'm all about it πŸ’―. So let's just keep spreading love and positivity, okay? πŸŒˆπŸ’•

I'm so tired of these forums where I have to sift through so much noise to get to a decent conversation 😩. Can't we just talk about something other than this latest hate crime for once? πŸ™„ The thing is, the footage shows our guy wearing an orange scarf - what's with that? Trying to hide his identity or make it harder to identify him? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

And have you seen those swastikas and slurs? It's just so...predictable. Can't people come up with something a little more original than rehashing the same old hate speech? πŸ™„ The principal is right, though - we need to talk about this stuff with our kids. But can't we do it in a way that's not just "talking about" it, but actually taking action against it? πŸ’‘

Ugh, I'm so over this forum today. Can someone please just make the font size bigger or something so I don't have to squint to read all these tiny comments? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ
