Syrian refugee elected mayor of German town, years after fleeing war | CNN

A Syrian refugee, Ryyan Alshebl, has made history by winning the mayoral election in the southwestern German town of Ostelsheim. Eight years after fleeing war-torn Syria, Alshebl, 29, secured 55.41% of the votes on Sunday, defeating two local candidates.

Alshebl's victory was met with jubilation from locals, who hailed him as a symbol of broad-mindedness and cosmopolitanism for the whole of Germany. The young politician described his win as "sensational" and said that Ostelsheim had sent an example to the rest of the country about the importance of embracing diversity.

Alshebl's journey began in 2015, when he was forced to flee Syria due to the conflict that erupted in 2011. He faced a difficult decision: serve in the Syrian army or leave the country. After crossing from Turkey to Greece on a rubber dinghy, Alshebl arrived in Germany, where he received asylum and began building a new life.

For seven years, Alshebl worked in the administration of Althengstett town hall, drawing from his experience to inform his mayoral campaign promises. His platform included making digital access to public administration services available, as well as flexible childcare and climate protections.

Alshebl's victory marks a significant milestone for Germany, which has been grappling with issues related to immigration and integration. The young politician's win is seen by many as a testament to the country's ability to welcome and absorb people from diverse backgrounds.

However, not everyone was pleased with Alshebl's election. He received hateful comments on the campaign trail, suggesting that his Syrian roots may have been a barrier for some voters. Despite this, Alshebl remains optimistic about his role as mayor and his commitment to serving the community.

As Alshebl prepares to take office in June, he will become the first man with Syrian roots to hold a mayor's position in Germany. His victory is a reminder that diversity and inclusion are essential values for any society looking to thrive in today's globalized world.

I gotta say, this Syrian refugee making history as mayor in Ostelsheim is kinda cool 😎. But what I find funny is all the ppl saying he's gonna bring 'diversity' to Germany... like, it's not like he's just another German or whatever 🀣. Newsflash: Germans already got diversity! You think a Syrian refugee is that different? πŸ™„ Anyway, I hope this guy can actually do some good and make Ostelsheim a better place for everyone 🀞

Just read about Ryyan Alshebl winning that mayoral election in Ostelsheim, he's 29 and Syrian refugee 🀯 - what an inspiration! Eight years since fleeing war-torn Syria, and now he's leading a town in Germany, a real testament to his strength and resilience. I'm so proud of him for staying true to himself and not letting the hateful comments get him down πŸ˜”. His platform sounds really progressive too, like digital access to public services and flexible childcare - we could all learn from that 🀝. It's a reminder that Germany is a country that values diversity and inclusion, and I think this win will pave the way for more people with different backgrounds to take on leadership roles πŸ’ͺ.

πŸ€” This election thing got me thinking... what if Alshebl wasn't really the top choice? I mean, 55.41% of votes still means there were people who didn't want him there πŸ˜•. What if those negative comments weren't just hate speech but a cleverly disguised campaign to sow discord? 🀯 Like, maybe some folks wanted to create tension so their own candidates would get more attention πŸ€‘.

And what about the whole "cosmopolitanism" vibe Alshebl's got going on? Is that just PR or does he really genuinely believe that embracing diversity is the key to success? 🀝 I'm not saying he doesn't, but you can't take everything at face value, right? πŸ€”

OMG, this guy Ryyan Alshebl is literally a hero πŸ™Œ! 8 yrs after fleeing Syria he becomes MAYOR of Ostelsheim, Germany πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ...talk about inspiring story [link to his mayoral campaign promises](https://www.ostelsheim.de/en/mayor-candidates.html) I mean, who wouldn't want digital access to public admin services or flexible childcare πŸ˜‚...Germany's got a lot to learn from this guy! πŸ€“ [watch the interview with Ryyan Alshebl](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-53444495)

Omg, I'm literally so hyped about this guy 🀩! 29 years old and he's already making history by becoming the mayor of Ostelsheim! You gotta admire his strength in overcoming such a tough journey from war-torn Syria to leading a town in Germany. It's all about being open-minded and embracing diversity, which is exactly what Alshebl has been preaching throughout his campaign 🌎. Can't wait to see how he brings positive change to Ostelsheim! πŸ‘

OMG 🀯, I'm so stoked about Ryyan Alshebl winning the mayoral election in Ostelsheim! It's amazing to see someone who has been through so much struggle and is now making history as a symbol of diversity and inclusion. 8 years after fleeing war-torn Syria, he's now a part of German politics and it's such an inspiration to everyone πŸ™Œ. I think it's great that he's talking about making digital access to public admin services and flexible childcare - those are some awesome ideas! 😊 Let's hope he can bring people together in Ostelsheim and show the rest of Germany what a positive impact one person can have. Fingers crossed for him! πŸ‘

πŸ€” I'm not surprised Alshebl won - people are finally starting to realize that immigrants bring some much-needed fresh ideas to the table 🌿. But what really gets me is all the hype around this being a 'milestone' for Germany πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ. What about the people who've been living in Germany for years? Don't they deserve some recognition too? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Ostelsheim's win might be a step in the right direction, but we need to see more systemic changes before I get on board with all the ' diversity is key' vibes πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. Still, it's heartening to see someone like Alshebl making a real difference in their community 🌟. Maybe this is the start of something bigger? 🀞
