The Ashes: England will not send first-choice batters to pink-ball tour game

England have opted not to send their first-choice batsmen to the pink-ball tour game in Canberra, with only a few players from the Ashes squad set to join the England Lions side for the two-day match against a Prime Minister's XI. The decision was widely seen as an opportunity for the team to give some of their top batters practice time before the second Test in Brisbane.

The lack of involvement from top batsmen like Zak Crawley, who became only the fourth English opener to record a pair in an Ashes Test in Perth, has been described as "bizarre" by former England fast bowler Jonathan Agnew. He believes that sending some players to Canberra would have provided valuable experience for them and potentially helped to improve their skills.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan echoed this sentiment, saying that it would be "amateurish" of the team not to take advantage of the opportunity. He argued that playing in a pink-ball game under lights could help the team prepare better for the upcoming Test match at Brisbane's Gabba.

The decision not to send top batsmen has been attributed to an 11-day break before the second Test, which meant that players who had featured in the first Test would have had limited time to practice. However, the England coach Brendon McCullum appeared to leave the door open for a batter to join the Lions side if they wanted to.

The team is set to travel to Brisbane on Wednesday and will not train until Monday, although there may be an extra training session on Sunday. With the first Test completed in just two days, many saw it as the perfect opportunity for the team to give some of their top batters practice time before the next match.

man i dont get why england isnt sendin their a-list batsmen 2 canberra lol its like they're savin' them 4 somethin or wut πŸ€”, brendon mccullum said theres an op in 4 a batter 2 join the lions side but it feels like hes just sayin that 2 make himself sound good πŸ˜’, anywayz its not like canberra's gonna break their bats or anythin lol, pink ball game under lights wouldve been sweet tho πŸ‘

omg u guyz i cant believe england is sendin only a few players from the ashes squad 2 canberra lol whats goin on? they should be givin those top batsmen a chance 2 practice under lights its a perfect opportunity 4 them 2 improve their game & brendon mccullum just leaves the door open 4 a batter 2 join lol i think its gonna b a major oversight if they dont take advantage of this

omg is this a joke? no top batsmen gonna join the lions side after all that hype about them getting practice time πŸ€―πŸ˜’ like what's the point of even having a tour if they're not gonna use it to prep for the big Test in Brisbane? 🏟️ and what's with the 11-day break tho, couldn't they have just skipped the pink-ball game altogether or something? πŸ˜‚ i mean michael vaughan makes a valid point but i'm still kinda disappointed πŸ˜”

I'm a bit surprised by this decision πŸ€”. I mean, you'd think that sending some of your top batsmen to play a pink-ball game would be a no-brainer. You get to practice in a unique environment under lights, which can really help with game awareness and strategy... plus it's not like they're going to be playing against a full-strength team or anything πŸ˜‚.

But I guess 11 days off before the next Test is a pretty big factor πŸ™„. Maybe Brendon McCullum was just trying to manage their workload a bit too carefully? It's still a shame, though - it feels like a missed opportunity for some of those top batsmen to get some extra practice time in.

I think what really gets me is that Michael Vaughan said it would be "amateurish" not to take advantage of an opportunity like this πŸ™ƒ. I mean, I agree with him on that point... but at the same time, you've got to consider the bigger picture and all the factors that go into team management.

Oh well, we'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out πŸ‘€.

omg i dont get why they cant play the pink ball game with all the big players πŸ€”... like what if they only needed a few days to practice? wouldn't that be better than not having them at all? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ and btw do they really need 11 days off before the next test? cant they just train on the plane or something? πŸ˜‚

I think its a total joke that theyre not even gonna send Zak Crawley to play some cricket πŸ™„. Like what's the point of havin a tour if you're just gonna leave all the heavy hitters out? Its a classic case of "we dont wanna pay 'em to get knocked over" πŸ˜‚. And yeah, I can see why Jonathan Agnew is sayin its bizarre, it makes total sense to give the lads some practice time before the big test match. But noooo, England's all like "nah, we're good" πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. Maybe they just wanna see if their new recruits are actually any good?

πŸ€” I dunno about this one... it feels like a bit of a risk not sending the top batsmen. I mean, if they're gonna play in Brisbane's Gabba, it should be for real, right? Not just some watered-down practice game 🏟️. It'd be good for them to get some quality time with the pink ball under lights before the second Test. Maybe Brendon McCullum knows what he's doing, but from where I'm sitting, it seems like a weird decision πŸ’”

omg what a bummer for england fans πŸ€•, i was really looking forward to seein those big names smash some balls around, but i guess 11-day break can be a bit harsh πŸ’”, Brendon McCullum should've given 'em more time to practice, and not just left the door open like that... it's all about preparation before the big Test at Brisbane 🌴🏏

omg what's going on with england cricket πŸ€”πŸ? i'm so confused about this decision... they have all that time to practice and still choose not to send their best batsmen to the pink-ball tour game in canberra 🎯 it makes sense if they have a long break before the next test, but 11 days is plenty of time to fit in some training sessions 😊 i think michael vaughan has a point here... playing under lights and with that unique ball could really help them prepare for the next match πŸ’‘ and what's up with brendon mccullum being all secretive about it 🀐 do we know who's actually going to join the lions side? πŸ‘€

I'm a bit surprised they're skipping this game πŸ€”. I mean, you'd think with all that practice, they should be solid by now, right? But Brendon McCullum's always been about giving players more control over their schedules, and it looks like he's sticking to that even if it is weird 😐. I get what Michael Vaughan's saying, though - this could've been a great chance for some young batsmen to shine under lights πŸŒƒ. But I guess you can't blame them for wanting that extra break before the next Test ⏰. What really gets me is Jonathan Agnew's 'bizarre' comment πŸ˜‚... he must be joking, right?

πŸ€” so i think this decision is kinda weird... like, what's the point of not sending top batsmen to a game that's specifically designed to test their skills? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ it's an 11-day break before the next test, so shouldn't they be making the most of this opportunity? πŸ˜’ also, i don't get why brendon mccullum left the door open for a batter to join the lions side... if he was that unsure, maybe he shouldn't have made the decision in the first place πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

anywayz, it's not all bad news... at least they're gonna give some younger players a chance to shine πŸ‘ and who knows, maybe this will be an awesome learning experience for them 😊

omg I dont get why england is doin this πŸ€”... like whats the point of havin a tour game if u dont send ur best players?? πŸ˜’ they r missin out on so much valuable experience and it just looks like brendon mccullum is just tryna keep them fresh for the next test πŸ™„ maybe im just watchin too many cricket matches but cant they see how this is gonna affect their game in aussie? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ what do u guys think tho?? 😊

I don't get why they're skippping out the top batsmen from that pink-ball game πŸ€”. It's not like it's gonna make a huge difference in their skills or anything, but at least it would've been a chance for them to practice and be ready for the Brisbane Test. I mean, it's not like it's a big deal or something, just a minor test match πŸ™„. The team should've taken advantage of it, especially with that 11-day break before the next one... it's just common sense, you know? 😊

I don't get why they're skipping this opportunity πŸ€”. It seems like they're just gonna wing it at the Gabba without giving Zak Crawley and those other lads a chance to warm up with some pink-ball practice under lights πŸ’‘. That's gonna be a tough Test match for them, especially if they don't get to fine-tune their skills beforehand πŸ”₯.
