The Guardian view on OBR v the Treasury: ministers have embraced the theatre of errors | Editorial

I'm so over all these budget forecasts being like the Olympics - everyone's got their own event & medal 🤦‍♂️! Seriously though, it seems like politicians are more worried about what bond traders think than actually sorting out the country's finances 💸. I mean, come on, £20bn isn't a huge hole to fill, but if you can't even get that right, how do we know you'll be good at managing the economy? 🤔

I just caught up on this thread 🙃. I think its all pretty common sense, but what really gets my goat is that no one ever talks about how much debt we're carrying over from the pandemic. Like, our entire fiscal situation was basically dictated by global events and how those affected trade/exports. We shouldn't be surprised that it's still a mess 🤯.

😒 I'm so frustrated with the way politicians are making promises they can't keep. The idea of having a "fiscal rule" that forces them to balance the books by 2029-30 is just ridiculous 🤦‍♀️. What about all the everyday people who are struggling to make ends meet? They're not thinking about bond markets or gilt issuance, they just want a decent standard of living and access to healthcare 💸. We need politicians who are willing to take risks and challenge the status quo, not just play along with whatever suits their interests 🤝.

The UK Govt is at it again 🙄. This fiscal fiasco is just theatre, plain and simple. I mean, come on, 20bn shortfall in 10 yrs? That's not a hole, that's just budgeting 101 😒. And what's with the OBR being treated like an oracle? It makes mistakes, duh! 🤦‍♂️

And don't even get me started on the fiscal rule. I get it, bond markets love austerity, but at what cost to our social fabric? 🤝 We need a balanced approach here, not some magic wand that says "just reduce interest bills and tax banks' gains" ✨.

It's all about the politicians playing politics over doing what's right for the country. Rachel Reeves was spot on to question the OBR's projections, but her silence is awkward 🤔. And Starmer's just dodging the issue 🔮.

We need a new Labour leader who's not afraid to take on bond market fear and rebuild our finances from scratch 💪. Until then, I'll be over here shaking my head at the theatre of errors 😴
