The Real ‘Heated Rivalry’: The Competitive State of Streaming Originals

The State of Streaming Originals in 2025 Revealed

A year-end report from Luminate has shed light on the US market for streaming original TV shows and movies, revealing surprising trends that have emerged. According to Tyler Aquilina, lead author of the report, 2025 saw a significant spike in the total volume of original content consumption across leading streaming platforms.

The numbers are impressive, with a 18% year-over-year jump in consumption - reaching 21% for series alone. This was largely driven by massive streaming hits on multiple platforms, including HBO Max's "The Pitt" and Paramount Plus' "Landman." These shows helped set the bar high, but it's worth noting that one of the most-watched series of the year didn't even come from Netflix or a scripted show.

Love Island USA took the top spot with approximately 18 billion minutes watched, defying expectations given Peacock's smaller distribution footprint. This success story highlights the changing landscape of streaming and the growing importance of niche content.

However, not all was rosy in 2025. Production volume for unscripted content plummeted across nearly all subgenres, with a massive 31% decline in the number of unscripted programs ordered. The only subgenre to buck this trend was sports-themed docuseries, which saw an increase in volume.

Netflix's dominance did take a hit in 2025, as its market share dropped from 63% in 2023 and 2024 to 59%. Meanwhile, rivals like Prime Video, Apple TV, and HBO Max made significant strides to close the gap. This shift in power dynamics is notable, particularly when it comes to original content viewing. The spike wasn't driven by Netflix's usual formula, but rather a combination of factors that have forced its competitors to adapt.

Lastly, original streaming movies saw an improvement compared to theatrically released movies in the SVOD window. While nine of the top 10 most-watched movies of the year were theatrical releases in previous years, four different Netflix original films managed to hold their own among the top-ranked titles.

These findings paint a picture of a rapidly evolving streaming landscape, where competitors are vying for attention and subscribers are increasingly turning to niche content. As the industry continues to shift, it's clear that 2025 will be remembered as a year when streaming originals became truly mainstream.

omg, can't believe love island usa took the top spot 🤯! who knew peacock was hiding such power? and yikes, what's going on with unscripted content tho? massive decline is no good 🙅‍♂️. but hey, sports docuseries are on the rise 🏈, so that's a silver lining! and it's cool to see netflix not being the only game in town anymore 😎. original streaming movies doing better than theatre releases? that's a game changer 🎥👍. can't wait to see what 2026 brings 🤔

I'm surprised they're saying Love Island USA was the most-watched show on streaming platforms this year 🤔📺 I mean, isn't that a pretty niche show? I guess you could say it's the new "It" show for some people 😂. And yeah, Netflix is no longer the dominant player in original content - that's not entirely surprising though. The market has always been about competition and keeping up with trends 📈. But what's interesting to me is how sports-themed docuseries became an exception to the production decline 🏆. Maybe it's because those types of shows are more accessible to a wider audience? Anyway, it'll be fascinating to see how this landscape continues to shift in 2026 💥.

dunno how i missed this one lol 🤦‍♂️ anyway, love island usa taking the top spot is wild considering all the hype around netflix and its usual formula 📺 i think this just goes to show that niche content is where it's at now - we're living in a world where shows like landman can actually compete with nbc drama 🤯 but yeah, 31% decline in unscripted content is still pretty alarming... hope they bounce back soon 💥

🤔 18 billion minutes watched on Love Island USA? That's crazy! Who knew reality TV could steal the show like that 📺💥 But seriously, this just goes to show how much people are craving for something different from the usual scripted shows and movies. Niche content is definitely the future of streaming - love it or hate it, it seems to be working 🤷‍♂️ 31% decline in unscripted programs? Yeah, that's a big drop... guess you could say they were feeling a bit scripted 😂

I gotta disagree with this whole "streaming originals becoming mainstream" thing 🤔. I mean, we're just gonna get more and more shows we don't even watch? It's like, who needs all those options, right? My money's on us getting a bunch of mediocre crap that nobody asks for, and it's just gonna flood our feeds to the point where nothing stands out anymore 📺. And what about the actual quality of these new shows? We're just gonna trade in some bland Netflix formula for more "niche content" because we feel pressured to be edgy? No thanks, I'll stick with my old-school TV marathons or a good ol' fashioned movie night with popcorn 🍿.

the whole thing just seems so fake 🤔 i mean think about it - love island usa takes the top spot but what really matters is that the viewers are actually watching it or not? if 80% of those minutes were binged at 3am in their PJs, does it even count as 'viewing'? and what's with all these new platforms trying to catch up to netflix? they're just making more noise than content 🎶

I'm telling ya, watching all these new shows and movies on streaming is like going back to VHS days 📺😂. Remember when you had to wait for weeks or even months to watch the latest season of your fave show? Now it's like, one season drops a week and everyone's hooked! Love Island USA taking the top spot, huh? That's like watching the most-watched season of TRL on MTV 📺👀. And those docuseries on Prime Video are just like old-school sports broadcasts, you know? It's crazy how streaming is changing the game, but at the same time, I kinda miss the good ol' days when we had to dig through our DVD collections or wait for movie rentals to come in the mail 📀🔗.

omg can u believe love island usa took the top spot? like i was thinking it would just be another scripted show but nope! it's all about the niche content now 🤯 i mean, 18 billion minutes watched is insane! and the fact that peacock's smaller footprint didn't hold them back says so much about the changing streaming game.

and yeah netflix's dominance did take a hit this year but honestly i'm kinda glad to see some other platforms getting in on the action? it's all about competition now and making the best content for our eyeballs 💁‍♀️. that 31% decline in unscripted content is wild tho - what even happened there? 🤔

😊 the numbers are crazy, but what i find most interesting is how love island usa became this huge hit without even being from netflix or a scripted show. it just goes to show that people want more than just your usual scripted content... 🤔 they wanna watch something real and authentic too... 👀

I think its crazy how Love Island USA took the top spot on streaming charts 🤯 like what even is this? A reality show beating out all these scripted dramas and movies? I mean dont get me wrong, its great to see niche content killin it, but 18 billion minutes watched for a reality show is just wild. And yeah I guess its no surprise that Netflixs dominance took a hit since they've been relying on the same old formula for years 📺

I'm lovin' how the top spot went to Love Island USA on Peacock 🤯! I mean, who knew a reality show could give Netflix a run for its money? It just goes to show that niche content is where it's at, and these big players need to adapt their strategies if they wanna stay ahead.

And can we talk about the decline in unscripted content? 31% is crazy! 🤯 I'm all for quality over quantity, but this makes me wonder what changed. Was it just a phase or did something shift in the market? And yeah, sports-themed docuseries are on fire 🔥.

It's also interesting to see Netflix taking a hit in terms of market share. It's no longer the go-to destination for original content, and its competitors are catching up fast. This is a good thing for consumers, though - more choices means better shows and movies for us to binge! 🎬

Can't believe how bloated everything is getting on these platforms 🤯. All this original content, it's like, yeah we get it, you guys are trying hard but can't we just have some decent discovery features or something? 🙄 I mean, Love Island USA is one thing, but why do I have to sift through a million other shows that are all vapid and cringeworthy just to find something good? 😩 And don't even get me started on the ads - can't they just cut them out completely? 📺

omg u won't believe what i just found out 🤯 - love island usa literally took the top spot in the most-watched shows and it's not even from netflix! i know, right? i mean, who would've thought that a show about reality dating would be more popular than some scripted dramas. anyway, i guess this just goes to show that niche content is where it's at these days 🤑. and btw, have u noticed how netflix isn't as dominant as it used to be? 59% market share is still crazy tho 💯

I'm loving how the smaller platforms like Peacock and Netflix are giving those big boys a run for their money 🤯. Love Island USA taking the top spot is wild, I mean who knew reality TV would be the key to beating out Netflix? 😂 And it's crazy that sports-themed docuseries are doing well - never thought I'd see the day where ESPN would be on Netflix! 🏈📺

📺💥 I'm not surprised at all about Love Island USA taking the top spot, tbh. It's been on for ages and has an insane dedicated fanbase. But what really caught my attention is how much Netflix took a hit this year. Like, 4% drop in market share? That's crazy! 🤯 I think it's because they got too comfortable with their formula and didn't adapt to the changing landscape as fast as others did. It'll be interesting to see how they respond in 2026. 📊

omg, i'm so hyped about these stats! love island usa taking the top spot is like, totally insane 🤯 and shows how niche content can actually do amazingly well on platforms like peacock. it's not just about the big names anymore, you know? and the fact that streaming originals are becoming mainstream is like, a dream come true for anyone who loves binge-watching their fave shows 😍 the only thing i'm kinda sad about is the decline in unscripted content, but i guess sports docuseries are still holding it down 🏆 anyway, can't wait to see what 2026 brings!

omg, this is wild 🤯! like, love island usa took the top spot with 18 billion minutes watched? that's crazy 😲. i guess we can see why niche content is on the rise now 👀. and i'm not surprised to hear that production volume for unscripted content plummeted 📉. but hey, sports-themed docuseries did do well 🏆.

and yeah, netflix's market share dropped in 2025 📊. it's like they had to adapt to the changing landscape now 💡. and i love that original streaming movies are doing better than theatrically released ones in the SVOD window 🎥. it just goes to show how much the way we consume content is evolving now ⏱️.

anyway, 2025 will definitely be remembered as a year when streaming originals became mainstream 📺. i'm excited to see what's next for these platforms and the types of content they'll create 🔥!
