The Rip review – Ben Affleck and Matt Damon tear through flashy Netflix bro thriller

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's latest team-up, The Rip, is a self-aware throwback to the action-packed thrillers of yesteryear. Released exclusively on Netflix, this slickly produced film stars the Oscar-winning duo as two seasoned cops tasked with transporting a mysterious sum stashed in a suburban home.

In an era where big-budget blockbusters dominate multiplexes, it's striking to see two A-list stars team up for a high-octane heist flick. The script, penned by TV writer Michael McGrale and director Joe Carnahan, is essentially a vehicle for Affleck and Damon to shine in roles that would typically be relegated to lesser actors.

The Rip has all the hallmarks of a classic action movie – the wisecracking banter, the high-stakes heist, the high-speed chases. But beneath its glossy surface lies a somewhat shallow narrative, with characters feeling more like archetypes than fully fleshed-out human beings. The female leads, while possessing enough tenacity to hold their own against the boys, are unfortunately relegated to the sidelines.

Carnahan's direction is his usual brand of brash and confident, drawing inspiration from the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Brian De Palma. While the film's pacing can be frenetic at times, the director's passion project feels more like a mid-budget blockbuster than a Netflix Original. The result is a movie that's best enjoyed in short, snappy doses – perfect for a Friday night viewing session.

Ultimately, The Rip is a product of its time and place, designed to tick all the boxes for a big-screen action flick but ultimately feeling constrained by its small screen limitations. With an eye-watering budget of close to $100m, it's hard not to feel that this film could have benefited from a more substantial canvas. Nevertheless, fans of the Affleck-Damon duo will find plenty to enjoy in this high-energy thrill ride, even if it doesn't quite live up to its full potential.

Despite some misgivings about its narrative and character development, The Rip is an enjoyable, if forgettable, piece of boisterous macho pulp. With a talented supporting cast and the undeniable chemistry between Affleck and Damon, this Netflix exclusive is sure to provide plenty of thrills for fans of action-packed entertainment.

I just got back from the most amazing road trip with my friends 🚗🏞️ We drove to this tiny coastal town and spent hours exploring the beaches and trying all sorts of seafood. I had the craziest idea for a new business venture - we're gonna start a subscription box service where we send people mystery boxes filled with weird and wonderful ocean treasures 🧵🌊 It's still just an idea, but man, I can already see the potential! Anyway, back to this movie... I loved the part where Matt Damon's character gets to do all that crazy driving - it was so intense! 😱

I just watched The Rip with my squad on a Friday night 😎 and I gotta say, it was a wild ride! Matty D and Ben were on point as the wisecracking cops 🤣, and Joe Carnahan's direction had all the hallmarks of a classic Tarantino flick - high-stakes heist, high-speed chases, and some serious one-liners 💥. But, for real, I felt like we were missing out on something more with the female leads... they got shafted in the script 🤷‍♀️. Still, it was a fun watch and perfect for when you need an adrenaline rush 😄. Netflix did well to bring this big-budget action flick to our screens 👍, even if it doesn't quite live up to its full potential 💸.

I THINK THE RIP IS A FUNNY CASE OF BIG BUDGET MEETS SMALL SCREEN CHALLENGES 🤔😂 I MEAN WHO DOESN'T LOVE BEN AFFLECK AND MATT DAMON IN AN ACTION FILM, RIGHT?! BUT SERIOUSLY, I FEEL LIKE THEY WERE RESTRICTED BY THE FACT THAT IT WAS RELEASED ON NETFLIX. I MEAN, YOU CAN TELL THEY WANTED TO PUT ON A BIG-SCREEN SHOW, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, IT JUST FOLLOWS ALL THE TROUGHS OF BEING A MID-BUDGET BLOCKBUSTER 🤑🎥

omg u guyz i just watched The Rip w/ my bf and it's literally soooo much fun!!! 🤩 ben affleck & matt damon are like total pros at playing the roles, so cool how they get to shine in this flick. but, like, i'm not really sure about the story tho... feels kinda shallow and the girls r kinda left out 😐. carnahan's direction is on point tho, it's like a classic action movie w/ all the bells & whistles! 🎥 but, yeah, it's def not perfect. we watched it in 1 sitting b/c it was so engrossing lol 👀 my bf loved every min of it tho, and i did too! 👫 what about u guys? have u seen The Rip? 🤔

idk why ppl r hyped 4 dis movie... its like every other big action flick - all high-octane but no real depth. affleck & damon r great, dont get me wrong, but cant they do better than this? the female leads feel like an afterthought 🤷‍♀️. and lets be real, its not like its original or anything... just a rehash of old tropes. still, fans of affleck & damon will prob have a blast watching it, so i guess its a solid if unremarkable action flick 💸

🎥 I gotta say, it's pretty cool that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are still teaming up after all these years 🤝. Their chemistry on screen is undeniable, and they always bring a certain level of charm to their roles. The problem is, sometimes that charm can feel like a crutch when the rest of the movie isn't as strong 💪. I mean, we've seen this kind of buddy cop setup done better elsewhere – but hey, at least it's an action-packed thrill ride 😎. One thing's for sure, though: The Rip might not be a game-changer, but it'll definitely provide some fun for fans of the Affleck-Damon duo 👍
