The U.S. investigation that led to Nicolás Maduro's capture and what may be next for Venezuela

Roger Carstens, the top American hostage negotiator in both Trump and Biden administrations, has spent years trying to bring down Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro. The U.S. finally succeeded in capturing and arresting Maduro yesterday, and he is now facing trial on drug trafficking charges along with his wife.

Carstens, who freed 65 Americans unjustly held in countries including Russia, Iran, and Venezuela, described Maduro as a "practical person" who wanted to solve problems, rather than a blood-thirsty maniac. He said that while there were certainly crimes committed by the regime, he didn't find Maduro to be a hardened drug trafficker.

The capture of Maduro was the result of a long-running investigation led by Sandy Gonzalez, a former DEA agent who spent 25 years investigating high-level drug trafficking in Venezuela. The indictment against Maduro accused him of being part of a massive conspiracy that involved state-sponsored narco-terrorism.

However, Carstens warned that the real challenge is yet to come: finding and rescuing the remaining Americans still held prisoner by the Venezuelan government. He said it would be difficult to rescue them without knowing their exact location, but emphasized that the U.S. should try to work with the new government, led by Maduro's loyal vice president Delcy Rodriguez.

The Biden administration has vowed to continue working towards regime change in Venezuela, while also cracking down on drug trafficking and other crimes committed by the Maduro regime. But critics, including Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, are questioning whether the U.S. is moving too quickly towards chaos without a clear plan for what comes next.

As Carstens noted, the key to success will be finding ways to work together with the new government, while also addressing the pressing issues of law enforcement and regime change. "This is a time for trying to solve problems," he said, passing on his message to Delcy Rodriguez and her brother.

just read about this... think it's crazy how Maduro got captured after all these years 🤯. dont know what to make of Carstens saying that Maduro is a "practical person" tho... sounds like someone trying to justify things to me 😒. anyway, glad the US was able to finally take action against him. but now they gotta deal with the real challenge: freeing the other American hostages 🕊️. hope they figure out a way to work with the new gov without making things worse. dont wanna see another Venezuela crisis on our hands 🤞

🌎 Just thinking about this Maduro situation makes me wonder if we're really prepared for what's coming next 🤔. The US has been playing this cat-and-mouse game with the Venezuelan government for years, and now that they've finally got their man, it's like we're not even sure what our endgame is 📝. I mean, Carstens is right, finding a way to work with the new government is key, but at the same time, we can't just ignore the fact that there are still Americans stuck in this mess 😩. It's going to be tough to navigate all these different factions and interests without losing sight of what really matters 🌈.

Man I'm so hyped that Maduro got caught 🤩! It's been ages since we've had any real progress in Venezuela, and this is like the ultimate win for humanity 🌎. But you know what really gets me? The fact that there are still Americans trapped in that country 🚫. Like, how many more people have to suffer just because of Maduro's ego trip 💔?

I mean, I get it, Carstens tried his best with the investigation, but we can't just stop at one person 😒. We need a clear plan for what comes next, and that includes working with the new government 🤝. It's not gonna be easy, but I believe in the power of cooperation and diplomacy 💪.

I also gotta say, Carstens' description of Maduro as a "practical person" who just wants to solve problems makes so much sense 🤓. Maybe we've been too hasty in judging him all these years 😴. But let's not forget, there are some serious crimes that need to be punished 💥.

Anyway, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the remaining Americans and the future of Venezuela 🌟. It's gonna be a wild ride, but if anyone can navigate it, it's Carstens and his team 💕.

Man I'm shocked 🤯 about Maduro being arrested! It's like something outta an action movie. You know back in the day when we used to watch those Tom Clancy movies, it was all about taking down bad guys like Maduro. But I guess that's still relevant today. Anyway, I'm just hoping they get to rescue all the Americans who are still held captive 🤞. It's crazy how complex this situation is - you gotta navigate politics and law enforcement and corruption all at once. Reminds me of when we used to deal with Saddam Hussein back in the day... it was a mess then too 😬. But hey, I guess Maduro's downfall is a good start!

🤝 I think it's kinda cool that Maduro's being held accountable for his actions, but at the same time, you gotta wonder what this means for Venezuela as a whole 🤔. Carstens seems like a pretty level-headed guy who actually wants to help people get out of tough spots, and I'm all for that 👍.

The thing is, we don't know all the details yet, so it's hard to say exactly how things are gonna play out 🤷‍♀️. But if the US can find a way to work with the new government without messing everything up, then maybe we'll actually see some progress 🌈. It's not gonna be easy, but if Carstens' experience is any guide, I think it's worth a shot 💪.

Let's hope that everyone involved can stay calm and focused on finding solutions instead of just yelling at each other 😌. We need to support the people of Venezuela who are trying to rebuild their country after all they've been through 🙏.

omg u guys i just found out that nicolas Maduro was arrested!! 🤯 like i knew he was bad but i didn't think they'd actually catch him lol anyway so i'm kinda glad it happened now that the americans can finally come home 🙏 i've been following this whole thing for ages and carstens is literally a hero i mean freeing 65 americans from all those countries is no joke 💯 but idk how they're gonna find all the other americans who are still held captive 🤔 like what if Maduro has some secrets on them or somethin? 🤫 and now that he's out of power u think it's actually possible for venezuela to become a peaceful country again? 🌎 idk i wish delcy rodriguez was more open about her intentions tho like is she gonna work with the americans or keep things shady 🤔

man... this whole situation is like, so complicated 🤯 u gotta feel bad 4 Maduro's family & loved ones, but at the same time, u gotta acknowledge the suffering of those 65 americans who were held captive for years 💔

it makes me think about how we approach problems in our own lives, whether it's a toxic relationship or a personal struggle 🤝 sometimes u gotta see the humanity in the person on the other side, like Carstens did w/ Maduro. it's not always easy, but it's what gets us to a place of understanding & resolution

anyway, the thing is, there's no clear plan for after this, which is what's really worrisome 🤔 we gotta think about how we can work together towards a common goal, even when we don't see eye 2 eye. it's not gonna be easy, but if we wanna move forward, we gotta try 💪

I don't usually comment but... I feel kinda bad for Maduro now that I think about it 🤔. Like, the guy's been in charge of Venezuela for ages and stuff is totally falling apart over there. Carstens saying he was a "practical person" who wanted to solve problems makes me wanna believe that maybe Maduro wasn't as bad as everyone says 🤷‍♂️. I mean, 65 Americans freed from Russia and Iran? That's some serious good deed right there 🙏. And now they're charging him with drug trafficking... it just doesn't add up, you know?

im curious about this whole situation 🤔... so Maduro wasnt really just a blood-thirsty maniac like some ppl make him out to be? i mean, carstens says he saw him as a practical person who wanted to solve problems... but at the same time, hes accused of state-sponsored narco-terrorism and drug trafficking 😕... it just seems like theres this big grey area in between, right? 🤷‍♀️ also, whats going on with these remaining americans still being held prisoner? will the us be able to work with the new gov without creating more chaos? 🤯

Just had this news about Maduro being arrested and stuff 🤔. I'm kinda surprised to be honest, not that it's bad or anything but like, how did we even manage to capture him after all these years? 🤷‍♂️

I mean, I guess it's a good thing that Sandy Gonzalez, the former DEA agent, led this investigation and whatnot. But the thing is, isn't there always gonna be another 'solution' or plan B in place for when someone like Maduro gets arrested? Like, we're not even sure if he was really involved with all those narco-terrorism charges yet 🤦‍♂️.

And now that he's outta power, what's next? Are we just gonna try to fill the void with some new government or something? That sounds super hasty to me. Can't they see how this whole thing is just a domino effect of chaos and stuff? 😒

🤔 so what's good fam? Maduro getting taken down but like Carstens said, it's not just about him, it's about finding those 100+ Americans still chillin in Venezuelan prison 🚔👮‍♂️ the US needs a solid plan B 'fore things get crazy in Venezuela 🌴 and btw, who's ready to take on Delcy Rodriguez? 😒 she's got some 'splainin' to do...

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing 🤯. I mean, one day Maduro's in charge, the next he's facing trial and arrested... it's wild 💥. But what really gets me is that we're already talking about regime change like it's a done deal 😬. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for holding people accountable for their actions, but isn't this just gonna create more chaos in the process? 🤔

And yeah, Carstens' whole "practical person" thing might make sense on some level, but you can't deny that Maduro's been involved in some serious shady stuff 💸. At the same time, I'm not convinced he was always a hardened drug trafficker... there's more to this story than just black and white 🚫.

For real though, let's focus on getting those remaining Americans out safely ✈️. That's what matters most right now. We can worry about all the other stuff later ⏱️. And honestly, I wish we could just see a clear plan for how this is all gonna play out... it feels like we're just winging it 😬.

um so theres this guy roger carstens and hes super good at getting americans out of trouble 🤔 like 65 people in russia, iran and venezuela he freed them all! but now he says nicolas maduro isnt as bad as everyone thought maybe hes just a practical person trying to solve problems 🤷‍♂️ like what if we work with the new government instead of just trying to take him down? my friend's cousin went to venezuela and said it was super touristy but also kinda sketchy idk man 😅

🤔 so i think this is a pretty big deal, but what's next? 🤷‍♂️ i mean, capturing Maduro was one thing, but now they gotta find all those other americans still being held captive 🚨. it's like, great that they're finally getting their freedom, but then you gotta wonder if the venezuelan gov is gonna just swap them out for someone else 💔. and what about delcy rodriguez, her brother's a big player in this now? 🤝 do we really trust her to make good decisions? 😳 also, i feel like carstens' vibes are all over the place - "practical person" who wants to solve problems... sounds like just another politician trying to spin their narrative 📺. what's the real plan here? 🤑
