'They want to break us': Russian energy grid strikes give freezing Kyiv some of its darkest days

Kyiv's residents face a daunting winter as Russia's energy grid strikes plunged the city into darkness, forcing many to endure freezing temperatures without access to basic amenities like heat and electricity.

The latest wave of attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure has left tens of thousands of people without power, with 70% of Kyiv's residents facing blackouts. The country's state-owned grid operator, Ukrenergo, warned that the aim was "to disconnect the city" and force its inhabitants to move outside.

Tetiana Shkred, a 35-year-old mother of two, spent hours cooking for her children in the dark after a power outage struck her apartment block. The family huddled together in a shelter space between two walls, where they stayed until the heat was restored.

"I'm worried now that they will strike again," she said. "I think the Russians want to break us." Shkred's fears are echoed by many Kyiv residents who have been left without access to basic services like water and heating.

Vitalii Zaichenko, Ukrenergo's chief executive, described the attack as an attempt to "disconnect the city" and force its inhabitants to move outside. Russia's increased focus on attacking energy infrastructure has led to major blackouts in other cities, compounded by a shortage of spare parts due to repairs from previous attacks.

In areas with more reliable electricity supply, rolling blackouts are common, with some supermarkets announcing plans for temporary closures. Emergency services have set up warming tents in the snow, offering hot food and drinks to residents who have been left without access to basic amenities.

For those struggling to cope, community spirit is a vital lifeline. Alla Polischuk, whose daughter was forced to take online classes while her school was closed, visited a warming tent with her teenage daughter. The 35-year-old said: "We just came in here to warm up... The worst thing is the cold, even when we dress in all our clothes and under blankets."

At one school in Kyiv, temperatures inside hovered around 10C, while an air raid shelter for the local community was set up as a warming centre. Despite the challenges, many residents are rallying together to support each other.

Valentina Verteletska, deputy director of a local school, witnessed the devastating impact of Russia's attack on her own apartment block. A missile hit just 100 metres away, killing a mother and her daughter.

"I think the Russians want to break us," she said. "But we're showing resilience and determination. War doesn't make people bad or good, but it amplifies who you are."

As Kyiv struggles to cope with the aftermath of Russia's energy grid strikes, residents are drawing strength from each other. Despite the challenges, they remain determined to survive – and resist.

πŸ˜” The situation in Kyiv is truly heartbreaking πŸ€•. This latest wave of attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure has left tens of thousands without power, forcing people to endure freezing temperatures without basic amenities like heat and electricity ❄️. It's devastating to think that many families are having to cook meals in the dark and rely on community shelters for warmth.

The resilience of Kyiv residents is truly admirable πŸ’ͺ. Despite facing unimaginable challenges, they're coming together to support each other and find ways to cope with the situation. The fact that emergency services have set up warming tents in the snow, offering hot food and drinks to those who need it most, is a testament to the city's community spirit ❀️.

It's also worth noting that this attack is not just about the physical infrastructure but also about psychological warfare πŸ€”. Russia's goal of "disconnecting" the city is a clear attempt to break the spirits of its inhabitants and force them out of their homes. However, as Valentina Verteletska so eloquently put it, "War doesn't make people bad or good, but it amplifies who you are." 🌟

ugh dont even get me started on that new avenger movie πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ i mean idk what kinda power outage would make u think thor can just chill in asgard all day and fight crime later πŸ˜‚ but seriously whats up with kyiv tho? its like theyre stuck in some kinda winter wonderland nightmare ❄️ has anyone tried that new coffee shop downtown tho? heard it's pretty lit β˜•οΈ btw did u guys know that star wars is getting a new series on disney+?? i heard its gonna be fire πŸ”₯

πŸ˜’ I'm kinda worried about Ukraine right now... like I know most ppl feel same way πŸ€•. But idk why ppl in power just can't talk 2 each other? Russia's been hitting energy grids nonstop & it's a huge deal 4 Kyiv residents, but its not like they're just sitting back & waiting 4 it 2 happen πŸ™„. It's like, what's the point of all these attacks? Is it really worth causin ppl 2 suffer so much? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Ugh, can we just say that this whole war thing is getting outta hand? 🀯 70% of Kyiv's residents without power? That's wild, dude! And what's with all these attacks on energy infrastructure? Like, can't they see how harsh it is for innocent people?

I mean, I'm not saying Russia is being malicious or anything, but come on... 10C in school? 😷 and air raid shelters as warming centres? That's just heartbreaking. And the community spirit here? It's actually kinda inspiring, even if it is a bit too late for that.

Valentina's words hit home - war doesn't make people bad or good, but it amplifies who you are. We should all be showing more empathy and understanding towards each other. Maybe we can learn something from these Ukrainian folks about resilience? πŸ’‘

πŸŒ‘οΈ it's so worrying about kyiv right now... people are struggling to access basic stuff like heat and water πŸš½πŸ’§ and i can only imagine how hard it must be for families like tetiana shkred who have to cook in the dark and huddle together for warmth ❄️️️️. community spirit is definitely a lifesaver here though πŸ’• - people are coming together to support each other and make sure everyone's okay 🀝.

i think it's also important to remember that war doesn't discriminate between good or bad people, like valentina verteletska said πŸ’”... it just brings out the worst in us all. but kyiv residents are showing incredible resilience right now 😊 - they're not giving up even when things seem darkest β˜€οΈ.

i wonder how many supermarters will be affected by these rolling blackouts tho πŸ€”... supermarkets aren't exactly essential services for people, right? anyway, i just hope everyone stays safe and warm until the power comes back on πŸ’ͺ

it's just brutal what's happening in kyiv right now ❄️. i feel like we're watching a real-life movie where russia is playing the villain. but what i don't get is why are these attacks being targeted at energy grids? can't they see how it's affecting ordinary people like tetiana and valentina? i mean, those ppl are struggling to survive in freezing temps without heat or electricity. it's just not right πŸ˜”.

anywayz, i think we need to be more vocal about this issue. we should be supporting kyiv residents in every way possible, whether it's through fundraising or spreading awareness about what's happening there. community spirit is everything in times like these πŸ’•. let's hope that the world can come together and support these ppl in their time of need 🌎.

πŸ€• Ukraine is literally in the middle of a human winter here & the lack of heat/electricity is getting really brutal for ppl. I mean, 70% of Kyiv's residents are stuck in the dark πŸŒ‘ & its not just the physical cold that's hurting them, its mental too πŸ’”. We need to get more support to these ppl ASAP 🚨πŸ’ͺ

πŸ˜” this is just so harsh on innocent ppl like tetiana shkred & her kids... cant imagine bein in their shoes w no heat or power πŸ€•πŸ”΄β„οΈ ukrainians r really showin strength n resilience right now tho πŸ’ͺ it's heartbreaking 2 see people suffer b4 our eyes, but i gotta give credit 2 the community spirit 🀝 which is helping ppl cope w this difficult situation ❀️

🌫️ u guys no how hard it is to deal w/ constant blackouts & freezing temps in kyiv?! 😩 like tetiana shkred's story, people r literally cooking in the dark, with kids around πŸ³πŸ’¦. and don't even get me started on the warming tents... they r a lifesaver, but it feels like u need one just to survive lol πŸ’ͺ.

anywayz, i think its super inspiring how kyiv residents r coming together 2 support each other 🀝. valentina verteletska's point abt war not makin ppl bad or good but showin who u r... that's so true πŸ™. let's keep sendin love & support 2 those affected in kyiv πŸ’•.

Ugh, can u beleev this ?? Russia's all like "let's take down Ukraine's energy" and now Kyiv is literally FREEZING in the dark... 70% of ppl without power? Like, what's next?? They're already hitting schools, hospitals, and shelters... it's so scary. And I'm sry to hear about Valentina V's lost family... that's just heartbreaking . People r coming together tho, which is really sweet .

omg u can feel the desperation in kyiv right now πŸ€• the power outages r getting so bad even water & heating r at risk lol 70% of kyiv's residents are facing blackouts lol what would u do w/ no heat or electricity? community spirit is def a vital lifeline tho, warming tents r poppin up everywhere 🏠❀️ and it sounds like ppl r really showing resilience & determination in the face of all this hardship πŸ’ͺ gotta keep them vibes positive 🌟

can't believe what's happening in kyiv right now 🀯 these constant attacks on their energy grid are literally killing people, no heat, no electricity... tetiana's story is so heartbreaking, a 35-yr-old mom just trying to keep her kids safe & warm πŸ’” we gotta do more than just condemn this from afar, we need concrete actions for those affected 🚨

I'm still trying to figure out why Russia would do this πŸ€”. Like, what's the point? Just messing with us at this point. I mean, we get it, Ukraine's got some issues, but come on, energy grid strikes aren't going to fix that πŸ’‘.

And honestly, can we talk about how Kyiv is supposed to be a modern city or whatever? It should have better infrastructure than this πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. Like, 70% of residents without power? That's not 'disruption' that's just basic human rights being denied ❄️.

I feel for these people though... being in the dark and freezing is super harsh. I'd rather be online, even if my internet's slow 🀯. These community spirit vibes are cool, but can't we just have a reliable energy grid? πŸ˜’

πŸ’” this is getting out of hand the russian attacks on ukraine's energy infrastructure have people struggling to even stay warm in their own homes i feel so bad for those stuck in shelters with no heat or water it's not just the cold that's a problem it's the emotional toll too these attacks are having a devastating impact on civilians it's like they're being punished for something they didn't do all this war stuff is getting so messed up πŸ€•

I'm tellin' ya, this is like, super suspicious... πŸ€” Russia's all over Ukraine, and it's not just about politics, fam. I mean, think about it - energy grid strikes? That's like a coordinated attack on the country's infrastructure. And they're trying to force people outta their homes? That's not just war tactics, that's psychological warfare.

I'm reading between the lines here... Russia's got some kinda control over Ukraine's energy supply, and they're using it as leverage. It's like they're playing a game of economic blackmail. And Kyiv's caught right in the middle. The residents are suffering, but you know what? They're not giving up. That's what I love about 'em - their resilience is like, whoa.

But here's the thing... have you noticed how often Russia's involved in these energy grid strikes? It's like they're trying to create a pattern. And when you connect the dots, it becomes clear that there's more at play than just a random attack on Ukraine's infrastructure. There's a hidden agenda, fam.

I know some people might say I'm being paranoid, but let me tell you, I've been watching these events unfold, and my gut's telling me there's something fishy going on here. We need to stay vigilant, folks. 🚨

Ukraine is going through so much right now πŸ€• and it's really sad that many people have to live without heat or electricity in Kyiv πŸ’‘. It's like their lives just become harder every day ❄️. I feel bad for all the families who are having to spend hours cooking in the dark, especially with little kids around πŸ‘§πŸ». And the thought of not being able to do basic things like taking a shower or using the toilet is just awful 🚽.

It's great that people are looking out for each other and supporting one another though 🀝. I've seen so many stories online about people from different parts of Ukraine coming together to help their neighbors, sharing what little they have 🍴. It's like, even in the darkest times, there's always something positive to be found πŸ’•.

I also think it's really interesting that the people who are living through this are saying stuff like "war doesn't make people bad or good" - you know? Like, we're all just trying to survive and stay human 🌎. And I love how they're staying strong and determined, even in the face of all this adversity πŸ’ͺ.

πŸŒ«οΈβ„οΈ This is so harsh on Kyiv's residents πŸ€•. The fact that many people have been left without access to basic amenities like heat and electricity for hours on end is just devastating 😩. It's not just the physical toll, but also the emotional distress caused by living in fear of when the power will come back on πŸ’‘.

Russia's energy grid strikes are a clear example of how war affects innocent civilians 🚫. The Ukrainian people deserve our support and solidarity during this difficult time 🀝. Community spirit is key right now, with residents coming together to help each other out and stay warm ❀️.

Wow 🀯. It's just so sad that people have to go through this πŸ’”. I can only imagine how scary it must be for them, especially with kids involved πŸ€•. The community spirit is really inspiring though πŸ™Œ, showing that even in the darkest times, there's still kindness and support for one another ❀️.
