'They were just screaming.' Mom unable to save 3 sons who fell through icy pond in Texas

Three siblings succumbed to icy waters in Texas during the ongoing winter storm, their mother recalling the desperate moments when she desperately tried to save them.

In a heart-wrenching account, Cheyenne Hangaman said her three sons, aged 6, 8 and 9, fell through an icy pond across from where they were staying. The siblings' tragic fate was sealed as Hangaman, who had warned them about the dangers of the pond, frantically jumped into the freezing water to try and save them.

"I was just screaming, telling me to help them," Hangaman recounted, her voice trembling with grief. "And I watched all of them struggle, struggling to stay above the water. I watched all of them fight." Despite her valiant efforts, Hangaman managed to grab onto a rope thrown by a passerby and was eventually pulled to safety.

The siblings' tragic demise has sent shockwaves through their community, with the Bonham Independent School District cancelling classes for the day due to extreme weather conditions. The school district's superintendent expressed his deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the victims, describing the loss as "unimaginable."

As Hangaman reflected on her children's bubbly personalities, she said: "You couldn't really stop their bubbliness." Their sudden passing has left a gaping hole in the lives of those who knew them.

The region affected by the severe cold has witnessed over 40 reported deaths so far.

omg 😱 i feel like i'm gonna cry thinking about this poor woman and her 3 kids 😭 their mom is still shaken up and it's just heartbreaking to think about how fast everything went from bad to worst...like she was literally warning them about the pond but she couldn't save them πŸ€• and now they're just gone πŸ˜” i can imagine how hard it must be for her to process all this grief right now 🀯 she keeps talking about their bubbly personalities and it's like, my goodness, they sound like such sweet kids...and now they're not here anymore πŸ’”

πŸ˜” This is just heartbreaking... can't believe three young kids lost to something as simple as ice. My heart goes out to their mom, cheyenne, she's going through so much grief right now. Ice may be a natural part of winter but it shouldn't take lives like that πŸš§πŸ’¦

πŸ˜” This is just heartbreaking. The mom's desperation and love for her kids is just overwhelming. I mean, she was literally jumping into the icy water to try and save them! It's like, what more can you do? 😱 And then watching them struggle... it's just too much. The fact that they couldn't even escape the freezing temperatures because of that one icy pond is just devastating.

And 40 reported deaths so far is just crazy. I feel for the whole community right now. It's like, winter storms can be pretty unpredictable, but this one seems especially brutal. πŸ€•

😱 this is just devastating... my heart goes out to Cheyenne and her family, it's like they're paying with their very lives for something as cruel as nature to do. ice can be so unforgiving, I feel terrible for the kids who fell through that pond πŸ€•. what must Cheyenne be going through right now? grief and guilt... my thoughts are with her and all those who loved the children πŸ’”. let's hope this winter storm brings some relief soon ❄️

πŸ˜” This is just heartbreaking πŸ€•. I can imagine how hard it must be for Cheyenne to go through this, losing her three beautiful sons like that. The mom's love and desperation to save them will stay with me forever πŸ’”. It's crazy to think about how quickly life can change, one minute they're playing, the next... gone 🌊. I hope the community comes together to support Cheyenne and her family during this unimaginable time ❀️. My heart goes out to them.

😩🌫️ Oh man this is like totally heartbreaking!!! How can you even be alive after witnessing something like that?!?! I'm literally sobbing thinking about those poor kids, they were just 6, 8 and 9 years old, what do they know about death?!?! And their mom, she's still trying to process it all, I don't think anyone could ever go through something like this and come out unscathed. Those kids' memories are now forever tainted by the tragedy of that icy pond... 😭🌊 My heart just can't even right now...

Ugh, this is just heartbreaking πŸ€•. The mom's desperation to save her kids is really something else... I mean, she knows better than to let them near that icy pond, but I guess you can't anticipate every situation. It's crazy how quickly things can go from fun in the snow to tragedy.

I feel for this family so much πŸ€—. Losing three kids at once must be just devastating. And to think about all those people who were out there trying to help her in that moment... it's just a reminder of how selfless we should strive to be as humans ❀️. It's going to take a while for the community to process this, but I hope everyone finds some solace in knowing they're not alone in their grief πŸ’”.

My heart goes out to Cheyenne Hangaman and her family πŸ€•... it's just devastating that she was forced to watch her beautiful boys slip away from her in the icy water. You can feel the desperation and panic in her account, and it's heartbreaking to think about what she must have been going through.

I'm so sorry for everyone who lost loved ones in this disaster 🌧️... 40 reported deaths is just staggering. The fact that the school district cancelled classes today is a small comfort, but I hope it shows they're taking this seriously and supporting those affected. It's days like these that remind us of how fragile life can be πŸ’”

πŸ˜” Seeing that story broke my heart. So many families are going through this right now... πŸ’” It's crazy how quickly things can turn bad when you least expect it. Those poor kids, they didn't deserve to die like that. πŸ€• Their mom is in such pain and grief right now. I hope she finds some peace soon.

We need to be more careful during these harsh winters. Ice can form so fast and it's not always visible. We should all look out for each other, especially when it comes to kids. They're innocent and don't know any better. 🌟 It's just not right that they had to suffer like that.

Ugh, I'm still trying to wrap my head around this heartbreaking news πŸ€•. The fact that a mom had to jump into freezing water to save her own kids is just... I don't even have words. And now the school's cancelling classes due to extreme weather? It's just another example of how things can quickly spiral out of control. 40 reported deaths in one region? That's just devastating 🌫️. Can we talk about how broken our systems are when it comes to emergency preparedness and response? The fact that a mom had to resort to self-preservation just to save her own kids is a tragedy that shouldn't have happened in the first place πŸ™.

🚨 This tragic event is like, what's going on with our infrastructure? I mean, isn't it common sense to have warning signs around icy ponds during winter storms? πŸ€” And why didn't they get proper training on how to respond in emergencies? It's not like we're expecting a major catastrophe or anything, just basic precautions. You know how this is going to affect the next election - the opposition party will be all over this, saying our governor isn't doing enough to protect citizens. I'm sure it'll be a big talking point at the next town hall meeting... πŸ—£οΈ

This is just heartbreaking πŸ€•... can't even imagine what Cheyenne Hangaman must've been going through, her boys' little faces popping up in her mind every time she closes hers, their laughter and playful energy now silenced forever. I mean, 6, 8, 9 - they're still young! The thought of not getting to see them grow, to watch them graduate from school, get married... it's just too much 😭. And on top of that, the parents are left to pick up the pieces, dealing with their own grief and trying to make sense of what happened. No easy answers here, just a lot of pain 🌫️.

πŸ€• this is just heartbreaking... i cant even imagine how she felt jumping into that icy water to save her kids πŸŒŠπŸ’” the thought of watching them struggle and not being able to save them is devastating 😩 the school district cancelling classes is a good idea, at least its a day for the community to come together in grief ⚰️ rest in peace to the 3 lovely siblings πŸ™

Ugh this is just heartbreaking πŸ€•... my heart goes out to that poor mom, Cheyenne, she's got to be going through hell right now... I mean, how could something like that happen? Those kids were just little and full of energy, always smiling and laughing πŸ˜”. And for her to have to jump in the icy water to try and save them... it's just too much to bear. The thought of all those kids struggling to stay afloat in the freezing water is just devastating 🀒... can't even think about it without getting choked up πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ.

πŸ’”πŸ˜± I cant even imagine what Cheyenne must be going through right now 🀯. Those poor kids were just playing around and then...πŸ’¦ The icy pond was like a ticking time bomb, waiting to take their lives away 😩. It's not like they did anything wrong, they were just being kids πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ. I keep thinking about all the what-ifs, what if she had saved them all? Or what if there was someone else nearby who could have helped πŸ€”. The fact that she's still trying to process it all is so heartbreaking ❀️. 40 reported deaths is just insane β„οΈπŸ˜·. Can we just take a moment to appreciate how quickly life can change and how precious every moment with our loved ones is? β°πŸ’•

Ugh, can you believe that icy pond just had to go and claim three innocent kids' lives 🀯? I mean, come on, parents are supposed to warn their kids about dangers like that! The fact that Cheyenne Hangaman's warnings went unheeded is what's really heart-wrenching here. And what's even more messed up is that her own valiant efforts to save them almost cost her life πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. I'm not saying the school district should be faulted, but it's still wild that they're canceling classes over this... like, 40 reported deaths isn't exactly a small thing either 😩. Anyway, RIP to those kids - their bubbly personalities were definitely going to be missed 🌟
