Topp rescue act not enough to save Horst Steffen at ailing Werder Bremen | Andy Brassell

Werder Bremen's desperate 2-0 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach has left the club staring into the abyss once again. With a dismal run of form, Werder have failed to beat Gladbach for the second time in four attempts and their season is rapidly unraveling.

The game started with a sense of urgency, as Werder pushed hard to score a late equalizer that seemed like a miracle goal after Marco Grüll's corner was headed out by Isaac Schmidt. Keke Topp, a 21-year-old sensation, scored a stunning volley in the 89th minute to give his team a lifeline and send the crowd into raptures.

However, it was too little, too late for Werder. The win against Gladbach meant that they remained two points behind their rivals at the top of the table. This defeat marked a further blow to a season that has been plagued by inconsistency and poor performances from key players.

The decision to fire coach Horst Steffen was inevitable, given the team's dismal run of form. It was a move made out of necessity rather than strategy. The board knew they had to act quickly to salvage what remains of their campaign, as Werder are now 15th in the table and in danger of relegation.

The search for a new coach is underway, with Thomas Schaaf - a legendary figure in Bremen's history - mentioned as an option. However, at 64 years old, it's unclear whether Schaaf will return to manage his boyhood club again.

Mainz and Augsburg have shown signs of life, highlighting the fact that Werder have not moved on since Steffen left the helm. Mainz, in particular, have been impressive, winning two straight games after a disappointing start to the season.

The bottom two teams, St Pauli and Heidenheim, are starting to look increasingly likely for relegation, while Hamburg's impressive performance against Bayern Munich has given them new hope.

The top four race is heating up, with a six-point gap between Dortmund and Bayern. Leverkusen and Freiburg are also in contention, making this an exciting end to the season.

For Werder Bremen, however, there can be no comfort in their win against Gladbach. It was a brief respite from their struggles, but ultimately, it was too little to save Steffen's job.

🤔 15th place? that's not just bad form, that's a recipe for relegation 🚨. Werder needs a complete overhaul, starting from the coach position. Schaaf might be an option, but at his age, it's a risk 🤷‍♂️. They need someone with a fresh perspective to revive this team 💡.

I'm not buying into all the hype around Keke Topp's goal 🙄. I mean, it was a nice volley and all, but 2-0 is still a pretty big deficit to come back from. Werder just needs to figure out what they're doing on their own field instead of relying on other teams' mistakes. And yeah, the fact that they lost this one means Steffen's gotta go 🚫. At this point, it feels like Werder is just going through the motions. They need a fresh start, not just another coach with a fancy name 😒. Maybe they should look outside their own history for inspiration instead of trying to bring back the past 🤔.

I gotta say, Werder Bremen is in a right mess, you feel me? 🤯 They've been playing poorly all season and now they're in danger of getting relegated. It's like they're stuck in neutral, you know? 🚗 Their coach was let go too soon, but I guess the board knew they had to act fast to try and save what's left of their season.

Mainz and Augsburg are on fire right now, and it's making Werder look even more lost. St Pauli and Heidenheim aren't far behind, though, so you never know who might get knocked out first. The top four race is getting intense, but for Werder Bremen, it's all just a blur... 😴 They need to figure out what went wrong and make some changes ASAP if they wanna stay up there.

Thomas Schaaf is an option, but I'm not sure if he'll come back to manage his boyhood club. Maybe someone younger with fresh ideas will take the reins? 🤔 Either way, Werder Bremen needs a wake-up call, stat! 💥

Werder's season is like a bad habit you just can't shake off 😩. They keep getting back up, but can never seem to break free. The fact that they're now 15th and in danger of relegation shows how far they've fallen. It's time for some serious soul-searching 🤔.

OMG, Werder Bremen is like, totally tanking this season 🤦‍♂️! They cant even beat the same team twice in four attempts lol! I feel bad for Marco Grüll tho, he had that sick header attempt 💪 but it just didnt pay off. And Keke Topp's volley was insane 🔥, like a miracle goal! But, sadly, it wasnt enough to save Steffen's job 🙅‍♂️

I think Werder needs a total reboot, you know? Maybe they need someone like Schaaf back at the helm, but can he do it? 🤔 At 64, that's like, ancient in football years lol. But hey, Mainz and Augsburg are killing it right now, so maybe Werder can learn from them?

The top four is heating up, which is awesome for the Bundesliga! But Werder Bremen is just over there struggling 💔. They gotta step up their game if they wanna avoid relegation. Wish 'em luck 🤞

Ugh, another team in trouble 😩... I mean, Werder Bremen is clearly stuck in a rut and their season is falling apart 💔. They can't even beat a decent team like Gladbach, let alone win the league 🏆. The fact that they've failed to score a goal at home for ages is just ridiculous 🙄. And now they're 15th in the table? Forget about it... relegation is looking more and more likely 😬. I'm not surprised they sacked Steffen, but Thomas Schaaf might be a bit of a wild card returning to Bremen at his age 🤔. Anyway, it's going to be an interesting second half of the season, that's for sure! ⚽

I feel like Werder Bremen's situation is really tough to watch 🤕. They're trying so hard, pushing for that late equalizer and Keke Topp's stunning volley... it's just not enough right now 😔. The team has been inconsistent and poor performances from key players are a big part of the problem. It's like they're stuck in neutral, can't seem to get back on track.

I wonder if the decision to fire coach Horst Steffen was the right one though? 🤝 Was it really necessary or could he have turned things around with some tweaks and adjustments? I know the board had to act quickly but at what cost? The pressure is building for Werder Bremen to get a new coach, especially with Thomas Schaaf mentioned as an option. Will Schaaf's experience and legendary status be enough to turn things around or will it just be more of the same?

It's crazy to think that Mainz and Augsburg are showing signs of life while Werder Bremen is struggling 🤯. The bottom two teams are really in danger of relegation, but Werder can't even celebrate their win against Gladbach 😔. It's like they're stuck in this never-ending cycle of disappointment.

Ugh, poor Werder Bremen! 🤕 They're really struggling this season and it's like they're running out of time ⏰. That win against Gladbach was a great morale booster, but at the same time, it's just reminding them that they still have so much work to do 😩. The fact that they're now in danger of relegation is just devastating 🌪️. It's like, what's going on? Are they losing players or something? 🤔 Can't even get a break with the top teams struggling themselves 🤷‍♂️. And to make matters worse, the board has to start searching for a new coach, which is just gonna prolong the agony 😩. Maybe Thomas Schaaf can help them turn things around, but we'll just have to wait and see 💭

omg this is like werder bremen is literally drowning 🤯 the way they're struggling now its like "okay we'll beat gladbach one time" and then nothing happens next 💔 their season is literally unraveling and hesitating on firing coach steffen was a good call tho 🙏 at least now they can start looking for someone new to save them from relegation 👀 schaaf could be a good option but idk if hes back in 🤷‍♂️

OMG u guys Werder Bremens 2-0 loss 2 Gladbach is like they r really strugglin right now 😩🤯 Their season is literally unraveling and I think firin coach Horst Steffn was a total necessity move. Like, even tho its not strategy it shows the board knows werder needs a serious shake up 🔄 They cant afford 2 keep on losin like this. Its gonna b intresting 2 c who they appoint as ther new coach tho 🤔 maybe Schaaf will come back but i dunno lol he's like 64 now u feel? 😂

oh man, Werder Bremen is really struggling right now... 🤕 they need to sort out their team issues ASAP or they'll be facing the relegation zone for sure! 😬 i feel bad for all the fans who are supporting them through this tough season. maybe a new coach like Thomas Schaaf can turn things around? 🤞 that would be awesome if he decides to come back and help his boyhood club 💚

Ugh, Werder Bremen is literally falling apart 🤯! They're like, two points behind Mönchengladbach and 15th in the table... what are they even doing? 🙄 I mean, I guess you gotta feel for Keke Topp's goal tho, that was a sick volley 💥. But come on, Werder, step up your game! They need a new coach ASAP, like Thomas Schaaf or someone who actually knows what they're doing 😒. Mainz and Augsburg are killing it right now and Hamburg just beat Bayern... what's going on with Werder?! 🤔 This is getting crazy, dude!

omg u gotta feel for werder bremen right now 🤕 they're like stuck in this rut and cant seem to get out of it 😩 their season is literally unraveling before our eyes and its not looking good for them 👎 their coach steffen got the axe and i think it was a bit of a no-brainer tbh 💁‍♀️ they just need a new spark, maybe someone like thomas schaaf to come in and shake things up 🔄 the competition is getting fierce though, with mainz and augsburg on the rise and hamburg putting on a show against bayern munich 😲 it's gonna be a wild ride till the end of the season 🚀
