Topp rescue act not enough to save Horst Steffen at ailing Werder Bremen | Andy Brassell

Werder Bremen's desperation was palpable as they clung to a 2-0 lead over Borussia Mönchengladbach in the dying minutes of stoppage time, with Keke Topp's sublime finish seeming like a miracle goal. The equalizer felt like a near-miracle, but it wasn't enough to save Horst Steffen, who was sacked just hours after Saturday's match.

Topp's goal was the spark that lifted Werder from their dismal form, but it didn't address the underlying issues plaguing the team. Werder are now in 15th place, with a winless run stretching to ten matches, and have failed to beat Gladbach despite having the better chances. The team's recent performance has been lackluster, with few notable contributions from new signings.

The departure of Steffen is not surprising, given the team's poor form. Werder are in danger of relegation, and their board had no choice but to act. They have long since abandoned hope of mounting a serious challenge for European places, leaving them searching for an external solution to revive their fortunes.

Thomas Schaaf, who led Werder to historic double-winning seasons as a player and coach, is among those considered for the vacant post. However, at 64 years old and having not coached full-time in nearly a decade, it's unlikely he will be available. Werder need someone with a fresh perspective and new ideas to lift them out of their slump.

Mainz, who won on Saturday despite being behind, are rolling after Silas Katompa Mvumpa scored a brilliant solo goal, and Stuttgart are moving up the table. Hamburg held Bayern Munich in a thrilling game, while Augsburg followed up last week's win at Bayern with another victory. The top four is becoming clearer, with Bayern leading Dortmund by six points.

Werder Bremen face Hoffenheim on Sunday, with the pressure mounting as they look to avoid relegation. With their season hanging in the balance, Werder need a miracle to turn their fortunes around.

man they really are struggling now 🤕Werder needs someone with a new perspective like Thomas Schaaf was back in the day but he's not available anymore . They can't rely on Keke Topp's magic all the time, gotta get some solid defensive help too . 15th place is not where you wanna be, relegation is always scary 😬

omg u guys werder bremen is literally imploding 😩 they cant even beat gladbach at home and now steffen gets sacked like what did he do 🤷‍♂️ anyways gotta feel for them tho, 10 match winless streak is crazy talk... they need someone new with some fresh ideas to shake things up i heard thomas Schaaf might be a contender but idk if he's gonna come out of retirement 🙏 mainz and stuttgart are on fire btw

man... werder's season is literally hanging by a thread 🤯. Steffen gets sacked after just one game back and you'd think the board would've done that ages ago . they're basically playing with fire now, gonna have to pull off some serious miracles if they wanna avoid relegation. gotta give it to topp tho, sublime finish that goal... but what's the point of all this drama if werder just can't even string together a decent game? Schaaf would be my guess for next coach, at least he knows how to get results when it matters most 🤔

OMG 😩 Werder Bremen is going through such a rough patch rn! 🤯 They're like 15th place and have been losing for ages... like, ten matches straight! 💔 I remember when they used to be all about the double wins under Thomas Schaaf 🙌 those were the days! Nowadays it's all about survival mode 😅 And Steffen getting sacked just hours after that match? Talk about a swift exit ⏰😂 Mainz is on fire 🔥 Silas Katompa Mvumpa's solo goal was INSANE 🤩 and Stuttgart is killing it 💪 Bayern Munich is still the team to beat, though 👑 Werder's gotta pull off some serious magic against Hoffenheim this Sunday or else... 😱

Ugh I'm so over these teams not being able to get it together 🤦‍♂️! Werder Bremen is like, stuck on repeat – same old problems, same old results 😩. They need someone with fresh blood to come in and shake things up, but at 64 and taking a break from coaching, Thomas Schaaf might be out of the picture 🙄. I mean, I love the guy's history with the team, but he can't bring the magic anymore 💫.

And honestly, Werder's performance has been super lackluster lately 🤯. They're not even beating teams they should be, like Borussia Mönchengladbach 😕. It's gonna take a miracle to turn things around, and I'm not sure if they've got it in them anymore ⚠️. They need to bring back some of that old swagger and confidence 🔥. Otherwise, it's gonna be another season of struggle for Werder 🤖

I'm worried about Werder Bremen's situation 🤕... they really need a spark, and Topp's goal was like a flash of hope, but unfortunately, it didn't change much for them. The fact that Steffen got sacked so quickly says a lot about the team's struggles. I think Werder need someone with fresh ideas to shake things up, maybe someone like Schaaf in the future, but now they're running out of time 😬... their relegation fight is getting intense, and Sunday's match against Hoffenheim will be a huge test for them 🏆

Ugh, 10 games without a win is a whole lotta struggles for Werder 🤯 Their board needs to think outside the box, get some fresh blood & ideas in there, 'n all that jazz 💡 Not sure about Schaaf though, 64's a bit old for this gig 😴

Ugh I feel so bad for the Werder fans 😩, their team is literally imploding right now! You can see the desperation on the pitch and it's heartbreaking to watch. They've been doing okay at times but then you see them drop points or lose badly and it just feels like they're stuck in a rut 🔄.

I'm not surprised about Steffen getting the axe though, 15th place is basically rock bottom for any team 💔. But now they need someone who can bring some fresh air to the club, maybe someone from outside Germany? 🤔 It's hard to see them doing much better with Thomas Schaaf at the helm, he hasn't been coaching in ages and it's a long shot that he'd be available.

I'm keeping an eye on Mainz and Stuttgart though, they're on fire 🔥! And the top 4 is starting to take shape, Bayern are looking strong as usual 🙌. But Werder? I just hope they can turn their season around before it's too late ⏰...

I'm telling u, Werder's issues run deeper than just Steffen goin'. They've been leaky defense for ages & their midfield has been non-existent 🙄💔. Topp's goal was sweet but it won't magically fix everything. They need a total rebuild or else they'll be sleepin' with the fishes 💀. Schaaf would be a good shout, but he ain't exactly spring chicken no more 😂. Werder needs some youngsters in & out ASAP to give 'em a fresh perspective!

I'm loving this comeback kid vibe from Keke Topp's goal, it was like a Phoenix rising from the ashes for Werder Bremen! But seriously though, 15th place is not where they want to be at this point. I feel bad for Horst Steffen, he got sacked on the same day, talk about being out of time. Thomas Schaaf would've been an awesome choice, he's got that managerial mojo, but I get it, 64 and not coaching full-time in ages... maybe Werder should go young gun next? 🤔🏆 Mainz's Silas Katompa Mvumpa is on fire though! That solo goal was straight outta Harry Potter, magic 💫. Can't wait to see what happens with Werder this Sunday vs Hoffenheim, they need a miracle indeed ⚠️

omg u cant believe werder bremens form is that bad lol theyre like the oldest guy at the party still trying to get attention werder needs someone new and fresh to come in and shake things up they cant just rely on keke topps magic goals all day its time for a change in management lol

I'm so done with Werder's season! 🙄 They literally can't catch a break. It's like they're begging for another team to come along and give them a gift. I mean, Topp's goal was amazing and all, but it's not like that's going to fix everything. The whole team is just really struggling right now. And Steffen getting sacked? Yeah, that was probably coming. Poor guy deserved it lol 😂. I don't think Werder can do anything about their situation anymore, they need a complete overhaul. Maybe someone young and new comes in and shakes things up for them 🤞.

I'm worried about Werder right now... 😟 They're playing like they've lost all sense of hope 🤯 and it's hard to see them turning things around. I mean, one good goal doesn't fix everything 💥. The team needs a serious shake-up and some new ideas to get out of this rut. Thomas Schaaf could be the right man for the job 👍 but we'll just have to wait and see if he's available. The pressure is on Werder and it's only going to get tougher as they face Hoffenheim on Sunday 🕒️. Can they avoid relegation? I'm not holding my breath 😅

omg i cant believe werder bremen is strugglin so bad after keke topps amazing goal 🤯 its like they were on fire for 2 seconds and then just lost all momentum they got some new players but clearly not doin the trick now they gotta find a way to turn their season around or else itll be bye bye bundesliga😬

omg u guys werder bremen is literally at rock bottom rn their form is so bad i mean we all saw it coming but still its sad to see horst steffen go hes tried his best but like werder just dont seem to care about winning anymore they need a new coach like thomas Schaaf or someone with some fresh ideas who can come in and shake things up werders recent signings are a disaster i mean where was that keke topp magic coming from?? its not just steffen though its the whole team theyre so lackluster and uninspired u feel for them but like werder bremen fans need to calm down and be realistic we all hate relegation but its lookin like werders chances are slippin away 💔😩

I think Werder's problem runs deeper than just Horst Steffen's departure 🤔. The team needs a complete overhaul, not just a new coach. They're still paying players who aren't delivering and it's time for the board to take a harder look at the squad. I mean, 10 matches without a win is ridiculous! 🙅‍♂️ They need to bring in fresh talent and rethink their strategy. It can't be just about throwing money at the problem...although that might not be the worst idea 😏. Either way, Werder's fans are bracing themselves for a long fall if they don't get it together ASAP 🚨

🤔 werder's form is really sad 🤕 they just can't seem to get it together 10 matches without a win is crazy. i think steffen getting sacked was probably for the best tho 😊 they were already in danger of relegation and needed a shakeup. new manager needs to bring some fresh ideas tho, not just try to fix what's broken. 🔄 stadium atmosphere must be killing them too, 2-0 lead turned into a disaster in stoppage time 😱

Ugh, Werder's form is like, totally depressing 🤦‍♂️... I mean, 2-0 lead and then just fall apart? It's like they're stuck on repeat 😩. And Steffen's gotta go, but the question is who's gonna come in and shake things up? Schaaf's not an option, he's way too old for this gig 🤯... someone with some fresh eyes and ideas would be perfect to lift Werder out of this slump 💡. Mainz and Stuttgart are killing it right now, and we all know Werder can't keep up if they don't sort themselves out 🤔. Hoffenheim's gonna be a tough one on Sunday, but Werder needs a miracle, like I said... because otherwise, it's just gonna be more of the same 😴.

I don't get why people still give Werder a chance after all this time 🤷‍♂️. They've been playing crap for months and Steffen gets the axe? It's about time someone shakes things up in that squad. Schaaf might be a good candidate, but 64 and out of practice? Yeah, no thanks. Werder needs some young blood and a change of scenery to get them back on track 🚀. And what's with this "miracle goal" nonsense? Topp's finish was sweet and all, but it wasn't like Werder was beating the odds or anything 😂. They just got lucky 🍀.
