Spurs swoop in for England midfielder Conor Gallagher as Aston Villa interest falters
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly secured Conor Gallagher on a £34.6m deal, ending Aston Villa's hopes of signing the highly-touted English midfielder.
Gallagher's departure from Atlético Madrid has come after rapid talks between the two parties, with Tottenham emerging as the clear favourites to secure his services. A transfer fee of up to €40m (£34.6m) is believed to be on offer, although Spurs will still need to pay a significant portion upfront.
The move comes at a time when Tottenham are in need of midfield reinforcements following Rodrigo Bentancur's hamstring injury, which could keep him sidelined for three months. Gallagher's arrival would provide much-needed depth and experience in the engine room.
Gallagher, 25, has been with Atlético since 2024, signing on a five-year contract after leaving Chelsea. He has seen limited playing time this season and is keen to secure regular first-team action to boost his chances of making the England World Cup squad.
Meanwhile, Tottenham are also facing uncertainty over Mathys Tel's future at the club. The young forward has grown frustrated with his lack of game time under Thomas Frank, having been loaned out by Spurs twice since joining from Bayern Munich in 2023. Tel wants regular playing time to make a significant impact for France at the World Cup, and is open to leaving on loan again if it means getting more first-team action.
Spurs are also set to complete a £13m deal for Santos youngster Souza, a left-back who will add further depth to their squad. However, they remain in need of attacking reinforcements, with Mohammed Kudus set to be out until April with a thigh injury and Spurs linked with several other targets in the transfer market.
