Tottenham agree £34.6m deal for Conor Gallagher to head off Aston Villa interest

Spurs swoop in to sign Conor Gallagher as Villa's hopes fade away.

Tottenham Hotspur have won the race for Conor Gallagher, agreeing a deal worth up to €40m (£34.6m) with Atlético Madrid. The England midfielder had been the target of Aston Villa's attention, but Spurs ultimately outbid their rivals to secure his services.

Gallagher has found it tough in La Liga this season, making just four starts for Atlético. However, the 25-year-old is eager to get back to the Premier League and boost his chances of getting selected for the World Cup squad.

The move comes as a blow to Villa, who had been hoping to agree a loan deal with Atlético. The club had also been linked with Manchester United, but it appears they will have to look elsewhere for their midfield reinforcements.

In other news, Mathys Tel has informed Tottenham that he is open to leaving on loan. The 20-year-old forward has grown frustrated at his lack of playing time under Thomas Frank and wants regular game action to boost his chances of making the World Cup squad.

Tel's future remains uncertain, with clubs in Italy, Spain, Paris FC, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, and Santos all registered interest in taking him on loan. However, Tottenham are reluctant to let him leave, having sold Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace for £35m just a few weeks ago.

The North London club is also set to complete a deal with Santos for Souza, their 19-year-old left-back. Spurs are now in the market for attacking reinforcements, with Mohammed Kudus due out until April with a thigh injury.

omg u guys!! 🤩 i'm soooo sad for villa fans rn... 😔 they were really hoping to get gallagher but spurs swooped in and got him!! 💪 that's some serious money tho, 40m euros is a lot!! 👀 and tel's future is looking uncertain too, i feel bad for him 🤕 he wants to play more games and make the world cup squad... 🌎 fingers crossed he gets there! 🤞

Umm, I think Tottenham's move for Conor Gallagher is actually a bit of a risk, considering how poorly he's performed this season... but at the same time, maybe Spurs just see something in him that Atlético didn't? 🤔 I mean, Gallagher has been struggling to break into the starting lineup at Atlético, so maybe Spurs think they can help him become more of a regular starter. On the other hand, if he's not good enough for a top-tier team like Atlético... 🤷‍♂️

And what about Mathys Tel? I'm all for Tottenham giving him some playing time, but at the same time, maybe they're just holding onto him as a bargaining chip to try and bring in someone else? 💁‍♀️ The fact that he's got so many interested clubs willing to take him on loan is pretty wild. Santos and Fenerbahçe might be good options for Tel to get some game experience... or maybe he'll end up at Paris FC and do alright for himself 🤞

🤔 Spurs got lucky this time, but it's not like they're doing anyone any favors by snatching Gallagher from under Villa's nose... Atlético Madrid was just holding onto him and now he'll be stuck in the middle of nowhere for another season 🏃‍♂️

Ugh, I'm so disappointed in Villa right now 🤕! They had Conor Gallagher all set to sign him on loan and then Spurs swoop in and steal him away from under their noses 😱. I know the lad struggled at Atlético but that doesn't mean he's not worth it for Villa. Now they'll have to keep searching for some decent midfield talent because Spurs are always going to be one step ahead of them 🏃‍♂️.

And what about Tel? He was just starting to get his chance with Spurs and now he's off again 😔. I mean, I get it, he wants to play more but can't they just give him a decent chunk of playing time? It's like Tottenham are trying to screw their own players over 🤦‍♂️.

I swear, every year it's the same thing with Spurs. They buy the best players and then have the audacity to complain when they don't get the results 🙄. I'm a huge fan of the club but sometimes I think they forget that we're all just here for the entertainment value 🎬.

OMG u guyz!!! 🤯 I cant even believe it!! 😱 Spurs just signed Conor Gallagher and its like OMG CONOR GALAHHER IS FINALLY IN SPURS!!! 🙌💖 I have been dieing for him to come to Tottenham since 2019 and now its finally happenin!! 💥 I know he had a rough season in La Liga but thats no reason to let him go!! 😭 Spurs just outbid Villa and got him on a deal worth up to €40m!! 🤑💸 this is the move of the summer for me!! 🌞 I hope he can help us get into the top 4 and even make it to the Champions League next season!! 🤩

omg u think spurs made the right move signing gallagher? i mean they gotta be worried about him getting injured tho 🤕 he's had a rough time at atlético this season. but on the other hand, villas hopes are really fading away now lol did u see tel wanna leave too? that's wild esp since spurs just sold brenton for like 35m 😂 meanwhile spurs r still searching for attackers cuz kudus is out and mohammed needs a rest 🤷‍♂️

omg i cant bliev spurs just signed conor gallagher lol Villa's hopes r literally crushed lol thats a big blow to them esp since they were hopin for him on loan 🤦‍♂️ atm teli seems like he wants out too lol hes had enough of villa and is now lookin at loans in europe 🚫👋 its gonna b intresting 2 c what happens nxt 🤑

🤔 I'm loving this transfer window so far 📈 Tottenham's move on Conor Gallagher is a smart one imo 💡 he's got some serious talent and will be perfect for their midfield woes 😅 now, let's talk about stats... did you know that Conor Gallagher has an average pass completion rate of 82.5% in the Premier League? 📊 that's insane! 👀 also, Tottenham's youth academy is on fire 🔥 with Souza and Brennan Johnson already making waves 💥 what's next for Mathys Tel tho? 🤔 he needs some serious game time to make an impact 💪

🤔 so villa's hopes just fizzled out like that? what kinda strategy is that? didnt they know spurs were gonna swoop in and grab gallagher? and now tel wants out too? seems like spurs are the only ones willing to take a chance on these young guys... and whats with the lack of communication from villa? shouldnt we be getting some sorta update on what went down behind closed doors? 🤷‍♂️

omg have you seen that new episode of stranger things on netflix ?? 🤯 i'm literally hooked on that show 😂 anyway back to football - so spurs getting conor gallagher is big news i think he's gonna be a great fit for them 👍 what do you guys think about mathys tel wanting to leave tottenham tho ? 🤔 seems like they're being kinda harsh not giving him more playing time 💔
