Trump Gutted AIDS Health Care at the Worst Possible Time

The Trump administration has dealt a devastating blow to HIV/AIDS healthcare in the US and around the world, leaving millions at risk of infection and thousands more without access to life-saving treatments.

Just as a new shot became available that offers six months of protection against HIV transmission, the US government has gutted AIDS health care at its worst possible time. The cruel reality is that public health workers are reeling from how President Trump has helped HIV circulate in more humans this year than last, disproportionately affecting already marginalized populations.

The cuts were far-reaching yet highly specific, with resources for short- and long-term health research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), universities, and community groups severely impacted. The administration's decision to cancel over $125 million in National Institutes of Health grants for LGBTQ-focused health research has left a gaping hole in crucial medical research.

The effects are not limited to economic hardship but have also resulted in job losses among humanitarian aid workers, impacting medical care and development programs globally. In South Africa, transgender people lost access to gender-affirming care, leading to forced detransitioning, depression, and even suicide. In Uganda, people living with HIV have been left without condoms, lubricants, medication, or food that was once provided by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

The gutting of funding for HIV prevention globally has put humanity at risk, undermining a novel chance to curb or even end AIDS. The World Health Organization recommended widespread use of lenacapavir as soon as possible, but Trump's administration "decimated the infrastructure of global HIV prevention programs" by destroying USAID.

The consequences are stark. In Uganda, Universal Love Alliance created a free STI clinic at a sex work motel in Kampala, where it gave condoms and lubricants to 200 sex workers and tested 86 people for HIV. However, most volunteers were filling in for paid workers who used to do this critical job, highlighting the dire lack of trained healthcare professionals.

Lenacapavir's benefits are clear: improving patient outcomes, increasing adherence, and reducing the burden of HIV prevention. But without trusted community health outreach workers to explain and administer it, its potential will be lost forever. The real tragedy is that viruses travel, and Trump's stop-work order has put the entire human race at higher risk for HIV and AIDS.

The Intercept's reporting on this crisis underscores the critical need for press freedom in defending democracy against authoritarianism. As we cover this story, we're not just shedding light on a humanitarian disaster; we're also exposing the machinations of an administration that's undermining global health security.

๐Ÿคฏ I'm telling you, something fishy is going down here... The US government just gutted HIV/AIDS healthcare and it's like they want people to suffer ๐Ÿค•. They cancelled those grants for LGBTQ-focused research, can you imagine? It's like they're trying to keep a secret hidden ๐Ÿ’”. And now, communities are suffering because of it, especially the most vulnerable ones ๐ŸŒŽ.

I'm not buying that this is just about budget cuts or priorities ๐Ÿ˜’. There's gotta be more to it than that. What's really going on here? Is it some kind of conspiracy? ๐Ÿค I mean, think about it... the timing of these cuts couldn't be worse. It's like they're trying to create a crisis so people will forget what's really important ๐Ÿ’ธ.

And don't even get me started on lenacapavir ๐Ÿงฌ. It sounds like some kinda secret medicine or something ๐Ÿค. Why did they cut off the funding for community health outreach workers? That's like leaving people defenseless against this deadly virus ๐Ÿšซ.

Something doesn't add up here...

OMG ๐Ÿคฏ this is literally heartbreaking!!! ๐Ÿ˜ญ how can one person cause so much harm to people all around the world? it's like they have no idea about the impact their decisions will have on millions of lives. I'm literally shaking with anger ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ, but at the same time, I just want to cry for all those people who are suffering because of this. we need to do something NOW to help them! ๐ŸŒŸ let's raise awareness and make some noise about this issue! ๐Ÿ’ฅ

๐Ÿ˜ฑ Can't believe what's happening to people living with HIV/AIDS ๐Ÿค•. This is like, super devastating news! ๐Ÿ’” The US government has basically cut off funding for HIV prevention programs around the world and it's gonna cause so many more deaths ๐Ÿšจ. I mean, think about it, a new medicine came out that could help stop HIV transmission but Trump's admin just canceled all the grants to study it... what's up with that?! ๐Ÿคฏ They're basically leaving millions of people to suffer from this disease ๐Ÿ’”. And it's not just US citizens who are affected either, it's also people in Uganda and other countries where they were getting help from USAID ๐ŸŒŽ. We need to take action ASAP! ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’‰ just saw this article about trump's cuts to HIV/AIDS healthcare and i'm still trying to process it... like what even is the point of having healthcare if you're just gonna slash funding at the worst time possible? ๐Ÿคฏ and it's not just the us, but africa and other parts of the world that are getting hit hard too. people are literally dying because they can't get the meds and care they need. ๐ŸŒŽ 200 sex workers in uganda lost condoms and lube thanks to trump's admin... what kind of monster does that? ๐Ÿ’” https://theintercept.com/2023/09/14...lashes-hivaids-healthcare-funding-world-wide/

๐Ÿ˜ฑ Trump's decision to slash funding for HIV/AIDS research and programs is a huge letdown ๐Ÿค•. I mean, you'd think with all the progress made in fighting this disease, the US would be all about supporting it, not cutting its lifeblood ๐Ÿ’‰. The fact that millions are now at risk of infection and thousands more won't have access to treatment is just devastating ๐Ÿ’”.

And what really gets me is how this affects marginalized communities the most ๐Ÿค. People who already struggle with healthcare access and resources are being hit even harder by these cuts. It's like they're saying, "Good luck trying to survive without our help" ๐Ÿ˜’.

I don't get why Trump would do something so reckless and short-sighted ๐Ÿ’ฅ. Does he not care about the global impact of his decisions? Or is this just another example of how out of touch he is with reality ๐Ÿค”?

We need to be sounding the alarm on this one, and fast โš ๏ธ. The world can't afford to lose momentum in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We need to rally around our global health infrastructure and demand that politicians like Trump start putting people's lives before profits ๐Ÿ’ธ.

And let's not forget about lenacapavir โ€“ it's a game-changer, and we're letting it slip away because of politics ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ. We need more funding and support for community outreach programs to get this treatment out to those who need it most ๐ŸŒŸ. Anything less is just not enough ๐Ÿ‘Ž.

the trump admin has done some major damage to hiv/aids healthcare worldwide ๐Ÿค• it's like they're playing with fire and people's lives are literally going up in flames. these cuts to funding for research and community groups can't be understated, it's like they're giving the virus a free pass to spread even more out there. i'm so worried about all the marginalized ppl who are being disproportionately affected by this. the fact that trans ppl lost access to gender-affirming care in south africa is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿคฏ and the impact on people living with hiv in uganda not having condoms or meds is just devastating. what's the point of even having a vaccine if we don't have the funding to support it? ๐Ÿค”

omg u guys can't believe what Trump did!! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ it's like he wants to watch HIV spread all over the world and kill people left & right!! i mean, 6 months protection against transmission is a game changer but now its like they're cutting off life support ๐Ÿš‘ the effects are so devastating - people losing their jobs, healthcare programs shutting down, trans ppl can't get gender-affirming care in south africa and uganda... its like he's trying to break our hearts ๐Ÿ’” lenacapavir is a lifesaver but without trained community health workers who will administer it?? its all gonna fall apart ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ trump's decision is literally putting the whole human race at risk ๐Ÿ’€ can't believe we're living in a world where this is happening and no one is doing anything about it ๐Ÿ˜ญ

๐Ÿ˜” The US government is really messing up the fight against HIV/AIDS... I mean, what's going on over there? ๐Ÿคฏ They cut funding for research and healthcare programs at the worst possible time! ๐Ÿ’ธ It's like they're trying to make people suffer or something... I don't get it. ๐Ÿ˜•

I just read that some organizations had to shut down their services because of lack of funds, and now people are losing access to life-saving treatments... that's just not cool ๐Ÿšซ. And what's with the cuts for LGBTQ-focused health research? That's like, super important stuff ๐Ÿ’–.

The world is already struggling with so many issues, and then you have a global pandemic like HIV/AIDS... I don't know how they expect us to tackle it without proper funding and resources ๐Ÿ’ช. It's just not fair ๐Ÿ˜ข.

I'm kinda glad The Intercept is exposing this story, though ๐Ÿ“ฐ. Someone needs to hold those in power accountable for their actions... ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ

man come out all over the news about trump cutting aids funding ๐Ÿคฏ like how is this even possible? it's just devastating for millions of people around the world especially those in marginalized communities they need our help now more than ever ๐Ÿ’” and what's really sad is that these cuts were made at the worst time possible with a new shot available to prevent hiv transmission

i'm so worried about the people losing access to life-saving treatments and the impact it's having on public health workers i feel like we're just sitting here watching as hiv spreads more and more ๐Ÿค• and what about lenacapavir? that thing is supposed to change everything but if we don't have trained healthcare professionals to administer it then its point is kinda moot ๐Ÿ’Š

anyway gotta say thank you to the intercept for shedding light on this crisis they're doing some real reporting over here ๐Ÿ“ฐ and i just hope that by exposing trump's machinations people will start to wake up and realize what's going on here we can't just sit back and do nothing when it comes to our global health security ๐Ÿ’ช

omg what's going on with the US gov ๐Ÿคฏ they're literally killing ppl worldwide w/ their cuts to HIV/AIDS healthcare it's so heartbreaking 2 see those already marginalized communities getting hit hardest, especially in south africa where trans ppl are losin access 2 life savin care ๐ŸŒˆ and now we gotta watch as the world descends into chaos w/o a decent shot against hiv transmission ๐Ÿ˜จ lenacapavir might b a game changer but without 1st rate community outreach & healthcare we r doomed ๐Ÿค–

man... it feels like the world is just losing its grip on life ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ˜ฉ the thought of people living with hiv/aids without access to treatment and prevention is just heartbreaking it's not just about the numbers, it's about the lives being lost, the families torn apart, and the future that's being stolen away from us one person at a time ๐Ÿ’”

and what really gets me is how this is happening under our noses, with our governments making decisions that seem so shortsighted and cruel ๐Ÿคฏ like, can't we see that investing in hiv/aids research and prevention is actually a sound investment for humanity? it's not just about the money; it's about lives. it's about people.

i keep thinking about what lenacapavir could do if only there were people to explain and administer it properly ๐Ÿค it's like, we have this amazing tool that can improve patient outcomes and reduce the burden of hiv prevention, but without the right infrastructure in place, it's just going to collect dust. it's so frustrating.

and then there's the world health organization's recommendation for widespread use of lenacapavir... it feels like they're trying to tell us something, but nobody is listening ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ we need to take this seriously, we need to act now, and we need to make sure that our governments are working towards a future where hiv/aids isn't a death sentence.

it's all just so... human. ๐Ÿ’–
