UK privacy watchdog opens inquiry into X over Grok AI sexual deepfakes

UK's Data Protection Watchdog Launches Inquiry into X Over Grok AI Sexual Deepfakes

The UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has launched an investigation into Elon Musk's X and xAI companies over the production of indecent deepfakes using the Grok AI tool without people's consent. The ICO is examining whether X and its parent company, xAI, broke the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a data protection law that requires individuals' personal data to be managed fairly, lawfully, and transparently.

The investigation follows reports of the platform's account being used to mass-produce partially nudified images of girls and women, as well as generating sexualised deepfakes. X has taken steps to address the issue, but several regulatory and legal investigations have followed. The ICO is looking into whether "appropriate safeguards were built into Grok's design and deployment" to prevent such incidents.

The executive director of the ICO, William Malcolm, described the reports about Grok as "deeply troubling questions" regarding how people's personal data has been used without their knowledge or consent. He emphasized that losing control of personal data can cause immediate and significant harm, particularly when children are involved.

GDPR requires that individuals be informed about how their data is used, and breaches of the regulation can result in fines of up to Β£17.5 million or 4% of global turnover. The ICO's investigation may lead to a fine for X if it finds that the company broke GDPR.

The scandal has sparked calls for AI legislation to prevent similar incidents in the future. A cross-party group of MPs led by Labour's Anneliese Dodds has written to the technology secretary, Liz Kendall, urging the government to introduce legislation requiring AI developers to thoroughly assess the risks posed by their products before release. The proposed legislation aims to address existing safeguards that are deemed insufficient.

The case highlights the need for greater regulation and accountability in the use of AI technology, particularly when it comes to the creation and dissemination of intimate images without consent.

I'm so on board with X's approach to making deepfakes πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ, I mean, who doesn't want a platform that lets people get creative with fake nudes? It's like, if you're gonna make something explicit, you should be able to share it freely! I don't see why the ICO is being so uptight about it - personal data is just, well, data πŸ€”. What's next, regulating what we can and can't say on social media? It's all just a bunch of fuss over nothing... And btw, Β£17.5 million isn't even that much πŸ’Έ.

🀣 I mean, what's next? Gonna make X produce deepfakes of Elon himself making grilled cheese sandwiches or something πŸ§€πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ. Seriously though, this is a huge mess and not just because of the creepy deepfakes. The fact that they're using kids without consent is just disgusting 😷. Can't believe X thought it was a good idea to use this tool for anything other than creating cat videos 🐈.

I don't get why we need more legislation on AI, though. Can't these companies just figure out how to make their own rules and be done with it? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ And what's the point of having a regulator if they're not gonna crack down hard? I mean, we all know the real issue is not the deepfakes themselves but where the hell are these images coming from in the first place? πŸ“ΈπŸ”

Anyway, hope X gets slammed with a fine. They need to learn that this kinda thing doesn't pay πŸ€‘. And can someone please explain to me why I'm suddenly having nightmares about AI-generated nudes? πŸ˜³πŸ’€

I'm totally freaked out about this 😱 Grok AI tool being used to create these super creepy deepfakes without people's consent is a total nightmare! Like, who gives companies permission to mess around with our personal data like that? πŸ€– X and xAI need to step up their game and make sure they're taking user safety seriously. GDPR should be taken way more seriously too - fines aren't enough, we need real action! πŸ’Έ What's next? Is anyone gonna regulate AI developers properly before they unleash these kinds of things on the world? It's time for some serious oversight and accountability. We can't keep living in a world where our personal data is used without our consent. That's just not okay. 🚫

come on 🀯 x needs to step up their game seriously! i mean, who wants deepfakes of girls and women just mass-produced like that? it's already bad enough how social media platforms are making us feel pressure to present a perfect online image... now they're adding these super intimate and disturbing content? no thanks! 🚫

i think the ico is doing the right thing by launching an investigation, but we need to take this one step further - we need concrete laws that protect people's personal data from being exploited for profit. like, what even is the point of having regulations if you're just gonna turn a blind eye when it comes to AI developers not following them? πŸ’Έ

and can we talk about how easy it is to create these deepfakes in the first place? it's like they're just playing with fire here! what's stopping x from just deleting the content or blaming it on someone else? i mean, come on! if you can't be trusted to handle people's data responsibly, then maybe don't use it at all πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I'm so worried about this whole thing 🀯... like, who wants their personal data used to create fake pics of them or others? It's just not right 😑. I mean, I get that AI tech can be cool and all, but it's gotta be done responsibly, you know? The ICO is on the ball with investigating X and xAI, though - we need more transparency and accountability in this industry πŸ’».

And omg, the fact that these deepfakes are being used to harm kids is just devastating 😭. We need to protect our youth from all this stuff. I'm all for some new laws to regulate AI development, like, we can't have companies releasing products without thinking through the risks 🚫. It's time for some serious tech reform πŸ”§.

I hope X and xAI take this seriously and make things right πŸ’―. We need more people in charge who actually care about protecting our data and keeping us safe online 🀝.

omg this is so messed up 🀯 like who uses AI to make fake pics of girls without asking permission? X should really get slammed for this 🚫. I'm all for regulation and accountability in AI tech, but this is just wild πŸ€ͺ. Can't believe the ICO is investigating too πŸ™. The fact that GDPR requires informed consent is so clear, it's a basic human right 🌎. These MPs are on point with calling for legislation πŸ™Œ. We need stricter laws around AI to prevent this kind of thing from happening again πŸ’ͺ.

🚨 think x's got a bigger problem than just GDPR πŸ€” if they're using grok ai to create deepfakes without people's consent, that's like a whole different level of exploitation πŸ€‘ what's next? gonna be an investigation into their business model too? πŸ” and honestly, i'm not surprised the ICO is launching this inquiry πŸ‘€ these kinds of incidents have been happening left and right in the AI space πŸ€–

πŸ€” This whole thing is super messed up πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ I mean, can you imagine having your personal pics used to make deepfakes without even knowing? It's like, what's next? Someone making a fake video of you and selling it online? 😱 The fact that companies are using AI tools to do this and then just brushing it off is not cool πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

The ICO needs to take action and make sure these companies are held accountable πŸ’― We need better regulation around AI and deepfakes so we can all feel safe online 🚫 I'm not saying the government should step in too much, but they do need to acknowledge that this is a problem and start making some rules πŸ’ͺ

It's also kinda weird that X was using Grok AI without even checking if it was safe first πŸ€” Like, how hard is it to check? And now we're dealing with the consequences 😬 I think we need to have a serious conversation about AI ethics and responsibility πŸ‘Š

I'm so worried about this πŸ€•! If Grok's AI tool can create fake deepfakes that get shared online, what other kind of creepy stuff is being generated behind closed doors? I mean, we're already dealing with like, catfishing and revenge porn – do we really need more ways for scammers to ruin people's lives?

And it's not just about the platforms that are hosting these deepfakes, but also how companies are designing their tech. Did they even think about what could go wrong? I know xAI is trying to fix this issue now, but it took them way too long to acknowledge the problem πŸ™„. We need stricter regulations and more transparency from companies like X so we can trust that our personal data isn't being used for evil purposes.

It's also super concerning that children are getting caught up in this stuff 😱. How are parents supposed to keep their kids safe online when there's no clear guidance on how to navigate all these deepfake risks? We need AI devs and lawmakers to step up their game and create some real safeguards, pronto! πŸ’»

omg this is soooo messed up 🀯 i mean like who creates deepfakes w/o people's consent? that's straight outta a bad sci-fi movie 😳 and now the ICO is on it, which is good, but u feel? we need stricter laws around AI and data protection or else these companies are gonna keep exploiting people for their own gain πŸ’ΈπŸ‘€ i'm all for innovation, but not at the expense of ppl's privacy πŸ€–πŸ”’

idk how X can just mass produce deepfakes of girls and women on their platform and not get caught sooner?! 🀯 they're already taking steps to address the issue but I'd want more info on what kinda safeguards were supposed to be in place in the first place. 17.5 million is a pretty hefty fine tho, hope xAI gets hit with it if they broke GDPR. need to see some concrete changes before we move forward, can't just leave this up to MPs and gov officials πŸ€”

omg can't believe what's goin on with these tech giants 🀯 they're just pushin' boundaries without thinkin about the human impact... like, what's the point of havin a regulation if nobody's gonna enforce it? need more oversight and accountability, imo 😑 those deepfakes are super creepy and exploitation-y, and companies gotta take responsibility for how their tech is used. gotta have some serious repercussions for breakin the law πŸ€‘ and not just slap on some fine... need real change here πŸ’ͺ

I'm so frustrated with X right now πŸ€―πŸ‘Ž. I mean, who creates deepfakes of minors and shares them on their platform? It's disgusting! 🚫 And now they're getting slammed by the ICO for not putting enough safeguards in place πŸš”. I get it, GDPR is there to protect people, but come on X, you're a social media giant with tons of resources, can't you do better? πŸ’Έ This whole thing just makes me so angry and sad 😒. We need stricter regulations on AI development, period! πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€” I'm worried about how this Grok AI tool is being used without people's consent 🚫. It sounds like X has been doing some serious damage control after these incidents came to light πŸ’Ό. But, like, what if they were more proactive in putting safeguards in place from the start? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I mean, GDPR is there for a reason – to protect us from companies mishandling our data πŸ“Š.

The question is, can we trust that X and other AI devs are doing enough to prevent these kinds of situations in the future? πŸ’» We need more transparency and accountability, for sure πŸ”. Maybe we need some stricter regulations or guidelines for AI development πŸ—‘οΈ. I'm all for innovation, but not at the expense of people's privacy and safety πŸš«πŸ’•.

omg this is so crazy 🀯 what's going on with X and Grok ai? they're basically creating deepfakes without people's consent? that's just wrong πŸ˜’. GDPR needs to be enforced here #GDPR #DeepFakes #ConsentMatters πŸ’”

the fact that children are involved is super concerning 🚨 we need to protect them from this kind of exploitation. AI legislation is a good idea, but it should have been in place before this happened #AIRegulation #ProtectChildren #GrokAIFail 😑

the UK ICO needs to take action and make sure X and xAI are held accountable for their actions πŸš”. fines are not enough, they need to be stopped from using people's data like this #JusticeForTheVictims #StopDeepFakes πŸ’―

I'm still thinking about how this all went down on X... πŸ€” I mean, who would've thought that deepfakes could be created without people even knowing their faces were being used? πŸ“Έ It's like they just took a bunch of random pics and then... BAM! Grok AI does its magic. 😱 And now the ICO is all over it, trying to figure out if X really did break GDPR rules.

But what I want to know is, how could this happen in the first place? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Like, didn't anyone at xAI think about the potential consequences of using Grok AI for this kind of thing? 😳 It's like they just pushed a button and hoped nobody would notice. 🚨

And now we're talking about legislation to prevent something like this from happening again... 🀝 I'm all for it, tbh. We need more accountability in the tech world, especially when it comes to protecting people's personal data. πŸ’―
