US Officials Meet with Ukrainian Delegation in Florida to Discuss Ceasefire Plan Amid Ongoing Conflict.
Washington has been engaged in secret talks with Ukraine over the past week, led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former President Donald Trump. The discussions took place at a private club in Florida, where the Ukrainian delegation was represented by top officials including Rustem Umerov, head of Ukraine's national security and defense council.
Ukraine is facing increasing pressure from Washington to agree to the terms of a ceasefire plan while it continues to suffer under a devastating war with Russia. The war has resulted in significant losses for Ukraine, including thousands of fatalities and widespread destruction of its infrastructure.
The US-led talks come as tensions between Moscow and Kyiv remain high, with the two sides still far apart on key issues such as territorial control and security guarantees.
In a statement after the meeting, Rubio said that "the end goal is not just to end the war but also to secure an end of the war that leaves Ukraine sovereign and independent." He added that while progress has been made in negotiations, more work remains to be done.
Umerov described the talks as "steps toward achieving a just peace" and expressed gratitude for US support. However, sources close to the Ukrainian delegation have told AFP that the talks were not easy and that finding common ground will require continued efforts.
The latest ceasefire plan developed by Washington has been revised substantially since previous talks in Switzerland. Kyiv and its European partners say the existing frontline must be the starting point for territorial discussions, while Moscow wants to see a recognition of land seized by Russia militarily.
The French president Emmanuel Macron is also set to meet with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday, amid growing calls from EU leaders for more concrete action to support Kyiv.
