United: Arriving flight at LaGuardia grazed parked plane, worsening Friday delays

A United Airlines flight from Chicago landed safely at LaGuardia Airport Friday evening, but its arrival was marred by a close call with another plane left stationary on the taxiway. The Boeing 737-800 aircraft struck the tail of another 737-800, which was parked on the ground, as it attempted to turn into its gate.

The incident has added fuel to the fire at LaGuardia Airport, where staffing shortages have been a major issue in recent weeks. While no one was injured among the 166 passengers and eight crew members aboard the arriving flight or the 162 passengers and seven crew on the other plane, which was heading to Houston, it serves as another reminder of the risks involved in navigating the airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that nearly 80% of air traffic controllers were absent at New York-area facilities due to a nationwide staffing shortage linked to the ongoing government shutdown. This has resulted in delays and safety precautions being implemented to slow down plane traffic.

In a bid to mitigate the impact on passengers, United Airlines stated that it was working diligently to get them to their destinations as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, United CEO Scott Kirby is urging lawmakers to come together and pass a clean congressional funding mechanism – known as a continuing resolution (CR) – to reopen the government.

The incident highlights the delicate balance between safety and efficiency in air travel, particularly during times of staffing shortages. With multiple factors at play, it remains to be seen how United will manage the impact on its operations and what measures will be taken to address the ongoing crisis.

OMG, can you even believe this?! Like, I get that staffing shortages are a big deal, but come on! Airports have to balance safety with efficiency? How about they just hire more people already πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ? And what's up with the FAA having like 80% of air traffic controllers MIA? It's not exactly rocket science... πŸ˜’ I mean, I know politicians are busy, but can't they just pass a bill or something?! United CEO is totally right to be on it, btw. I'm all for them pushing for a solution πŸš€. Maybe the answer is more training programs or something? The question is, will they actually do something about it before the next "incident" happens?! 😬

Ugh, this is getting outta hand 🀯😬! I mean, 80% of air traffic controllers missing? That's just crazy talk! I'm all for finding a solution, but come on, can't we just get some folks hired already?! πŸ™„ It's not like it's rocket science, but apparently, it is when you've got staffing shortages causing delays and whatnot... *facepalm*

And now this United Airlines incident? Who knew planes could just casually collide with each other on the taxiway?! πŸ˜‚ I'm just glad no one was seriously hurt, but honestly, can't we get our airports together? It's like they're trying to make flying as stressful as possible 🚫

I guess what really gets me is that this is happening at LaGuardia Airport, which is already having some major issues. I mean, have you seen the lines for security?! It's like a real-life game of musical chairs up in there πŸ˜‚...

ugh this is getting scary 😩 like what if someone got hurt?! theyre literally trying to get these planes in and out so fast but something has to give. have u heard about la guardia airport lately? its been a nightmare 🚫 i saw some videos of them having to divert flights because theres not enough staff 🀯 meanwhile, congress is just sitting around like "oh well" πŸ˜’

πŸ€” I mean, can you imagine being an air traffic controller trying to keep everyone safe with only 20% of your team? It's like trying to juggle too many balls at once 🎯. The staffing shortage is a huge issue here and it's crazy how it affects the safety of our flights. But at the same time, we gotta think about efficiency too - planes can't just sit idle all day ⏰. I guess what this whole thing teaches us is that sometimes you have to make tough choices between two important things (safety vs efficiency) and find a balance that works for everyone 🀝. And yeah, it's time for our leaders to step up and solve this problem - we need a team effort here, not just one person calling the shots πŸ‘₯.

🚨😬 Airports are super stressful right now! The fact that 80% of air traffic controllers were out due to staffing shortages is just crazy 🀯. I feel for all the passengers who had to deal with delays and uncertainty while trying to get to their destinations on time πŸ˜“. And then you have an incident like this where two planes almost collided... it's a miracle no one was hurt! πŸ™

As someone who's been following this whole government shutdown thing, I think United Airlines is doing a good job of keeping passengers informed and working to get them to their destinations as quickly as possible. But it would be awesome if lawmakers could just work together and pass that CR already! 🀞 It's not like we don't have enough on our plates dealing with the pandemic and climate change... can't we just focus on fixing this stuff? 😩

Yeah, because what's a little close call among 737s when there are people's lives at stake? I mean, who needs staffed airports anyway? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ It's not like planes can just magically stop in mid-air or anything. And good luck to those air traffic controllers trying to keep everything under control... said no one ever πŸ˜’.

Ugh, can you even imagine being on that flight? 😱 Like, one minute you're just chillin' on the plane, next thing you know there's a huge crash waiting for you... taxiway, yeah right! 🚨 I mean, what was that air traffic controller thinking? "Oh, let's just leave this 737-800 parked in the middle of the runway"... πŸ‘Ž Like, priorities people! Safety should always be the number one thing.

And to make matters worse, staffing shortages everywhere... it's like they're playing some kind of sick game with our lives. 🀯 I mean, what's going on? Can't they just work together to get this done? πŸ™„ It's not like it's rocket science or anything. And now we're paying the price in the form of delays and stress for everyone involved.

I swear, airlines are so lucky to have those crazy pilots who somehow manage to keep us safe while navigating these chaos-ridden airports... kudos to them, tbh! πŸ’―

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole government shutdown thing πŸ€”. I mean, I remember when Obama was president and we had a debt ceiling crisis, but it seemed so much more serious back then πŸ˜…. Now it's like they're just playing chicken with the country's finances πŸš—.

And can you believe United Airlines is having to deal with this? I used to love flying with them, but now I'm not sure if I'd want to risk getting stuck at LaGuardia Airport for hours πŸ•°οΈ. I mean, 80% of air traffic controllers being absent? That's crazy! What about all the passengers who are going to be delayed because of this? 😩

I just wish Scott Kirby would come up with a better plan to get everyone to their destinations on time ⏱️. And can we please just pass that CR already?! πŸ™„ It's like they're playing a game of whack-a-mole trying to fix all these problems at once 🀯.

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I was just trying to get home from a trip last week and my flight got delayed for hours due to the staffing shortages at LaGuardia. It's crazy how these incidents keep happening, like this one with the plane hitting the tail of another one on the taxiway πŸ›«πŸ˜±. 80% of air traffic controllers were out, can you believe it? 🀯 I'm no expert but it just seems like common sense that we need to get our act together and find a solution ASAP so we don't have to deal with this stress anymore 😩.

Ugh, this is just another example of how aviation is all about timing and luck πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, can't they see that staffing shortages are a huge red flag? It's like they're playing a game of air traffic roulette – pray you don't crash into each other! 😬 And now we've got to deal with delays and safety measures being implemented... it's just so frustrating.

I'm all for getting the government shutdown sorted out ASAP, but come on, folks, can't we find a way to balance safety and efficiency without putting everyone in harm's way? πŸ€” It's like they're trying to squeeze every last penny out of this situation. I mean, United's working hard to get passengers to their destinations, but at what cost? The airlines need to step up their game and make some real changes, not just paper over the problems with a quick fix πŸ“.

I swear, it's like we're living in an episode of "Air Traffic Control" 🚨 – except instead of drama and romance, it's all about dodging collisions and delays 😬. Can't we just have one smooth flight without any hiccups? Is that too much to ask? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

😬 just thinking about this close call makes me nervous... airport staffing shortages are a major concern and it's not just about air traffic controllers, what about ground crew and maintenance staff? 🀯 80% absent is a big deal. How can they expect planes to take off and land safely with so many people missing? 🚫

Ugh, I'm so worried about those planes 🚨πŸ’₯... but like, shouldn't they have some kind of system in place to prevent this from happening? πŸ€” And at the same time, it's not like they're flying blind or anything... there are air traffic controllers and safety protocols in place. πŸ“Š

I mean, I get why staffing shortages are a big deal, but can't we just... figure something out? 😩 Like, how hard is it to hire more people? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ It's not like the entire airline industry would be affected or anything... probably not, right? πŸ’Έ

Man... can't believe what I just read about this near miss at LaGuardia Airport 😱. It's like, we're all stuck in this crazy limbo where our safety is compromised because of staffing shortages. I mean, think about it... 80% of air traffic controllers MIA? That's a recipe for disaster. And here we are, playing the waiting game, hoping that planes don't collide or get delayed forever.

It's like, how do you prioritize efficiency over safety in a situation where lives are at stake? I guess it's all about finding that balance, but what if it's not possible to find that sweet spot? What if our love for air travel gets sacrificed on the altar of politics and budget cuts? πŸ€” It's a tough one, fam...

🚨 this is getting crazy! like, i'm all for addressing staffing shortages and all but can't we just find a solution that works? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ i mean, 80% of air traffic controllers missing? what's next? planes landing on the runway at midnight because nobody's around to stop them lol? πŸ˜‚ seriously though, how do they even manage with so few people in control? and what's up with united being like "oh noes" when something goes wrong? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ can't they just plan for this stuff?

😬 just had another scare at LaGuardia Airport! Like, can't even get a flight in safely without something crazy happening... 80% of air traffic controllers out? That's like leaving the entire plane crew in charge πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. I'm all for lawmakers working together but come on, how hard is it to fund gov stuff?! The airline just wants to get ppl to their destinations already! It's like, can we balance safety with efficiency or what?! The lack of staffing is making things worse... I guess that's why they say hindsight is 20/20. Better now than never, right? πŸ€”

OMG, can you believe that just when we thought things couldn't get any more chaotic at LaGuardia Airport 😱? A plane almost crashes into another one because of staffing shortages! Like, I get it, airlines are trying to minimize delays and whatnot, but safety should always be the top priority 🚨. It's not exactly rocket science, folks... just make sure someone is paying attention when planes are taking off and landing, okay? πŸ™„

omg I'm literally worried about flying rn 🚨😬 this whole LaGuardia airport thing is getting out of hand. staffing shortages are one thing but a plane almost colliding with another because of it?!?! 😲 80% of air traffic controllers MIA and now they're slowing down planes... what's the plan, united? πŸ€” I'm sure those passengers would've rather been on their way to Houston ASAP than stuck in this mess. and what about scott kirby's plea for lawmakers to step up? πŸ™ fingers crossed they can get something done ASAP πŸ’ͺ

omg this is so scary 😱!! i feel bad for those pilots who have to deal with this every day πŸ™ like how are they supposed to keep their cool when things get crazy at the airport? 🀯 at least everyone on board was safe, that's all that matters right now πŸ’•

I'm telling you, it's a total disaster 😩... I mean, who wouldn't want to work in air traffic control, right? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ But at the same time, if we're gonna criticize the staffing shortages, shouldn't we also acknowledge that air traffic controllers are literally working their butts off trying to keep everyone safe? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ It's a no-win situation. And can you blame them for wanting some stability in their lives after months of uncertainty? 😊 I don't think so... unless... if they're just getting paid peanuts and have to deal with all the stress, then maybe it's different πŸ’Έ. But I'm not sure... *sigh*
