US begins transferring ISIL-linked detainees from Syria to Iraq

The United States has started transferring hundreds of ISIS-linked detainees from northeastern Syria to Iraq as the Syrian government continues its push into territory previously held by Kurdish forces.

According to the US military, 150 detainees were transferred from a detention facility in Hasakah, Syria, to a secure location in Iraq. This move is part of an effort to transfer up to 7,000 people with alleged ISIS links to Iraqi-controlled facilities, aimed at preventing mass breakouts that could pose a threat to regional security.

The transfer comes as the Syrian government extends its control over previously Kurdish-held areas, where several camps and prisons are located. The US military is working closely with regional partners, including the Iraqi government, to ensure the secure transfer of detainees and prevent further instability in the region.

The move marks a shift in the US's approach to combating ISIS, as the special envoy to Syria has stated that its main partner against the group will be the Syrian government. Iraq has also approved the transfer, with the National Security Council stating that it will receive terrorists of Iraqi nationality and those from other nationalities who were detained by the Syrian Democratic Forces.

The detainees being transferred have been involved inshedding innocent blood, including in Iraq. While ISIS was largely defeated in 2017 in both countries, sleeper cells still carry out attacks. The SDF played a major role in defeating the group.

just saw this news and im thinking its super weird how the US is transferring detainees to Iraq when theyre already having issues with terrorism there πŸ€”. i mean, dont get me wrong, ISIS is still a huge threat and needs to be dealt with, but cant they just keep these ppl in Syria where its more stable 🌳? also, whats up with the SDF being left out of this process? they were the ones who took down ISIS in the first place πŸ’ͺ. i hope these transfers dont lead to any more instability in the region 🀞. its not over yet for ISIS fighters πŸ‘Š

just wondering what's next for these people πŸ€”... they were involved in some pretty serious crimes and now they're just getting shipped off to another country? seems like they should at least be tried or something? not sure if it's the US or Iraq that's really concerned about regional security, but either way it feels kinda convenient for them to take on this responsibility πŸ™ƒ...

πŸ€” just wondering why the US is suddenly teaming up with the Syrian gov't to take down ISIS? didn't they used to be all about taking them down themselves? seems like a 180Β° turn, and it's got everyone talking. πŸ“Š meanwhile, i'm more concerned about how these detainees will be held & what kinda "justice" system we're talking about here...🀝 also, gotta ask: who gets to decide who's an ISIS affiliate & who doesn't? is this gonna lead to some serious human rights issues? πŸš«πŸ’”

This is gonna be a total disaster 🚨πŸ’₯. I mean think about it, we're basically sending people who've been linked to ISIS back into Iraq where they can cause even more harm. I get that regional security is a thing and all but come on, what's being done to prevent them from escaping or causing chaos? The SDF was the one who actually took down ISIS in Syria, not some government agency in Washington πŸ€”. And now we're just handing these people over to the Iraqi government without even making sure they won't be a problem. It just doesn't add up...

this is so messed up 😱... i mean, think about it, we're talking about thousands of people who were involved with one of the most evil terrorist groups in recent history... and now they're being transferred to another country where they might get a second chance at life πŸ€”. but what about the innocent lives that were lost during the fights against ISIS? shouldn't those be taken into consideration too? 🀝

i think the us military is trying to do its part in preventing mass breakouts and keeping regional security intact, but it's also kinda weird that they're relying on the syrian government to help them out πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. i mean, we've all seen what happens when governments get involved with groups like that... where does that even lead?

anyway, this transfer might be a good thing for the detainees themselves, but it's also a complex issue that requires some serious consideration from everyone involved πŸ’‘.

just saw this news and i'm like totally worried about these detainees being transferred back to iraq πŸ€• it's not gonna be good for them, or for the people who are supposed to be safe now that the kurdish forces are losing control πŸŒͺ️ and what about the sleeper cells? i mean, we thought isis was defeated in 2017 but clearly, there's still so much work to be done πŸ’” they're trying to transfer 7k people or something? that's a lot of ppl who've been through hell and back already πŸ‘€

Can't believe they're just dumping these ppl on Iraq πŸ€•. I mean, I get it, gotta keep the peace and all that, but have you seen the state of those facilities? I'm pretty sure it's not gonna be like a five-star resort for these guys πŸ˜‚. And what about the risk of escape or even worse, getting taken out by some rogue cell? It just seems so reckless to me πŸ™„.

And don't even get me started on the Syrian government being in charge now... they're always so shady πŸ€‘. I swear, it's like they think we'll just forget all about the whole ISIS thing πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. Newsflash: we haven't forgotten! πŸ˜‚

OMG, like, I'm low-key concerned about dis whole thing 😬. I feel bad for da ppl being transferred back to Iraq, esp since dey been involved in all sorts of evil stuff πŸ€•. I mean, I get it, US gotta keep an eye on things, but can't we just find a way 2 make sure dey don't cause more harm? πŸ€” Also, what's up w/ da Syrian gov taking over Kurdish territory? It feels like another layer of complexity in dis whole mess 🀯. And I'm all for regional partners workin together, but shouldn't da SDF be in charge 2 begin w/ defeating ISIS? 😑

Its like, you'd think the US would wanna keep these dudes locked up in Syria after everything they did πŸ€”. But now they're just gonna hand them over to Iraq? That's weird. I get that it's about preventing mass breakouts and keeping things stable in the region, but can't they find another way to do that without putting so many people at risk? 😐

And what's up with the SDF not being involved in this transfer? They were super key in taking down ISIS, but now they're just kinda... left out πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. I guess it makes sense that Iraq and the Syrian government want to take care of their own security, but can't we find a way for everyone to get along here? 🀞
