War of the Worlds review – HG Wells recast as a fever dream of fear and xenophobia

A reimagined 'War of the Worlds' that's more about the fear within than the alien invasion itself. The Lancaster-based Imitating the Dog production puts HG Wells under a microscope, where London is facing an existential crisis as much as the Martian invaders. The story now centers around William Travers, a fervent supporter of Enoch Powell who finds himself in a desperate struggle for survival after suffering a heart attack.

This unsettling vision brings to light the darker aspects of British society at that time - xenophobia and internal fear - rather than focusing on the extraterrestrial threat. Travers' character is depicted as a paranoid individual, consumed by anxiety and panic, with an air of desperation surrounding him. The film's use of visuals and cinematography creates a claustrophobic atmosphere that mirrors his mental state.

As for dialogue, there is very little in this production - the emphasis lies on visual storytelling. This leaves audiences to piece together Travers' thoughts through pantomime and body language, making it challenging to discern his motivations or emotional depth. The lack of clear communication only adds to the sense of unease and confusion that pervades the film.

Despite its narrative shortcomings, 'War of the Worlds' is a visually stunning adaptation that pays homage to the original work while also showcasing innovative storytelling techniques. Pete Brooks, Andrew Quick, and Simon Wainwright have outdone themselves with their imaginative production design and choreographed performances. With sets designed by Abby Clarke featuring an predominantly dirty palette and James Hamilton's sweeping score perfectly complementing the atmosphere, this cinematic experience stands out from its peers.

Ultimately, 'War of the Worlds' offers a striking vision that delves into the human psyche rather than simply depicting a cosmic threat. While it might not be for everyone, those who dare to venture in will find themselves lost in an unsettling world where fear is the ultimate enemy and self-preservation is all that's left to fight for.

🌪️ I gotta say, this reimagined 'War of the Worlds' is really freaking me out 😱! At first, I was like "wait, it's not about the aliens?" But then I thought about it and realized that the real enemy is our own fears & anxieties 🤯. The way they've adapted the story to focus on William Travers' character is so unsettling, it's like you're right there with him, feeling his anxiety and desperation 😬. And don't even get me started on the visuals - the cinematography is straight out of a nightmare 🌑️. I love how it's more about human psychology than an alien invasion story 💡. It's definitely not for everyone, but if you're down for a thrill ride that'll keep you on the edge of your seat, then this is the film for you! 👍

omg i just watched this reimagined war of the worlds and its SOOOO mindblowing!!! 🤯 they took the OG story and turned it into this whole thing about fear within vs alien invasion... sounds kinda weird but trust me its GENIUS. its like, the main guy travers is super paranoid and anxious and you can literally feel his desperation radiating off the screen... the visuals are insane too, like super claustrophobic and unsettling. i love how they didnt even use dialogue thats all well and good lol the film just lets you piece together whats going on through body language and stuff which adds to the whole unease thing.

i mean its not perfect cuz like there are some narrativish bits that dont quite work... but its so visually stunning and them productions design is on point 🤩 especially with all the dirty colors and whatnot. james hamiltons score is tho!!! it just complements everything so well. anyhoo, if ur feeling adventurous and wanna see something new take a stab at this war of the worlds reimagined its definitely worth it 😏

🤯 just watched this reimagined 'War of the Worlds' and I'm SHOOK! 🌪️ it's not about the aliens, but about the fears we hold within ourselves. William Travers' character is so unsettlingly relatable 🤝 and the cinematography is pure perfection 🎥. The way they've used visuals to create a sense of claustrophobia is genius 😱. I love how there's no clear dialogue, it makes you piece together the story yourself, which just adds to the unease 🤔. And that score by James Hamilton? 🔥 masterpiece! 👏

Omg u guys this new adaptation of War of the Worlds its literally soooo creepy 🤯 the way they're showin how the main character William Travers goes from bein a fervent supporter of Enoch Powell 2 a paranoid individual consumed by anxiety n panic its like wow so realistic 😱 i mean the lack of dialogue actually adds 2 the tension & unease u feel as u watch him tryin 2 survive but the cinematography n production design is literally mindblowin 🤯 i mean who knew HG Wells could be so dark n unsettling lol

I'm low-key obsessed with this reimagined 'War of the Worlds' 🤯... it's like, they took a classic tale and flipped it on its head, focusing more on the internal struggle rather than just the alien invasion. The way they've portrayed William Travers as a paranoid individual is super unsettling 😬, and that claustrophobic atmosphere? Chilling.

I love how they're using visuals to tell the story instead of dialogue 📺... it's like you have to piece together what's going on in Travers' head through his body language and expressions. It's like, really unnerving. But at the same time, I appreciate how they're trying to show the darker aspects of British society back then - xenophobia and all that 🌎.

The production design and score are insane 👏... Pete Brooks, Andrew Quick, and Simon Wainwright have done an amazing job with this adaptation. And Abby Clarke's sets? So dirty and gritty 🤢. James Hamilton's score is like the perfect accompaniment to the atmosphere they've created.

It's not for everyone, but if you're down to venture into a world where fear is the ultimate enemy 😅... then I'd totally recommend it. It's a wild ride, but in a really unsettling way 🎢.

I think this new take on War of the Worlds is kinda cool 🤔... no, wait, I'm not sure about that 😒. The idea of exploring human fears rather than just aliens invading seems pretty interesting, but then again, isn't it just gonna be a bunch of people freaking out and running around in circles? 💥 The lack of dialogue does make you wonder what's going on with the characters' thoughts, like, how do we even know Travers is paranoid or not? 🤷‍♂️ At the same time, I love the visuals and cinematography – it's super creepy and claustrophobic 😳. But, can we really say this adaptation does justice to HG Wells' original work? 🤔... maybe? 🤷‍♂️
