Washington resident believed to be the first to die from rare strain of bird flu

Rare Bird Flu Strain Kills First Human, Officials Say Public Risk is Low

A Washington state resident has become the first person in the US to die from a rare strain of bird flu known as H5N5. The victim, an older adult with underlying health conditions, had recently come into contact with domestic poultry that had been exposed to wild birds.

According to state health officials, there is currently no evidence of transmission of the virus between people and the risk to the public remains low. Health officials will monitor anyone who came into close contact with the person, but they say there is no reason for widespread concern.

This case highlights a key distinction between H5N5 and another bird flu strain known as H5N1. While H5N1 has caused significant outbreaks in humans worldwide, particularly among farm workers, H5N5 appears to be less virulent.

In recent years, the US has experienced a wave of human infections attributed to H5N1, with most cases being mild and limited to individuals working on dairy or poultry farms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had previously stated that there was no evidence to suggest that the risk to public health had increased as a result of this case.

As authorities continue to monitor the situation, residents in Washington state are advised to remain vigilant but not alarmed by the news of this rare bird flu strain killing its first human.

Wow πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ’‰ interesting how it's H5N5 that's got a low risk to the public, while H5N1 is super deadly to humans! Guess it's all about the specifics of the virus, right? πŸ€” Interesting also that this victim came into contact with domestic poultry that had been exposed to wild birds... could be a key factor in how they got infected πŸ“πŸ˜·

omg what's going on here!! i'm low-key freaking out about this new bird flu strain 🐦😷 first human death is super concerning, esp since it was someone with underlying health conditions πŸ€’ but at least the public risk is still considered low πŸ‘ so like, we gotta be careful around domestic poultry and all that πŸ“πŸ’‰ but not gonna freak out over here πŸ˜‚ hope they can figure out what's going on and keep us safe πŸ’ͺ

omg is this for real?! 😱 so there's one person who died from this and it's not like they just got a little sick or anything... they actually died from it? 🀯 that must be super scary for the family

so what's with the H5N5 strain being less virulent than H5N1? why is that?! is it because of how the virus behaves in humans or is it just that we haven't seen as many cases of it before?!

and omg I hope they're doing okay with the contact tracing and all... I feel bad for anyone who came into close contact with the person who died... do you think they'll be able to test everyone? πŸ€” and what's the point of having a public health alert if there's not gonna be like a huge outbreak right?!

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this rare bird flu thing 🀯... So basically it means there's a new strain that's like way less deadly than some other ones, right? And this one killed an older person in Washington state who had been around chickens or something. Like, not super surprising given their health conditions. But still, it's weird. 😷 The good news is that the experts say the risk to us regular people isn't really high, and they're just keeping a close eye on anyone who might have come into contact with this person. So yeah, let's all just try to stay calm about it, I guess? πŸ™

idk why ppl r worried πŸ€”, it's like, one person died from this super rare strain & the rest of us are good πŸ‘. i mean, i've had chicken soup with my grandma who works at the farm & that was NO big deal πŸ˜‚. obviously, u gotta be careful around sick birds but it's not like we r walkin' around w/ a death sentence 🀝. the doc says public risk is low & they're just keepin an eye on people who were close to the victim πŸ‘€ so, yeah, let's just chill out for now 😎

OMG 🀯 I'm literally shaking right now thinking about this! A person died from H5N5, that's crazy 😲. I know it says the risk is low, but what if someone else got infected? πŸ€” Like, how would you even know if it's something serious or just a mild cough? πŸ€’ My friend who works on a farm in California is freaking out, she's been getting updates from her coworker and they're all being kept at home as precaution. I don't blame them though πŸ˜‚. It's always better to be safe than sorry. But seriously, how did this person get infected? They weren't even working with birds or anything... πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Wow πŸ€―πŸ¦† I mean, it's crazy how rare that one is... like, H5N5 is less virulent than other strains? That's kinda a good thing, right? Interesting 🌟

I'm freaking out lol πŸ˜…πŸ“ I mean, a new strain of bird flu is a big deal, especially when it's fatal to humans! I know health officials say the risk to the public is low and there's no reason for widespread concern, but what if this virus mutates and becomes more contagious?! 🀯 We already have enough problems with COVID and other viruses, can we really afford to be complacent about something like this? 😬 I'm keeping an eye on this story, that's for sure... πŸ‘€πŸ‘

idk how reliable those state health officials are πŸ€”... just because there's no evidence of transmission between people doesn't mean it can't happen, right? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ and what's with the fact that H5N5 is less virulent compared to H5N1 but still managed to kill a human? seems kinda fishy to me 🎣... shouldn't we be taking this more seriously? πŸ€•

omg, just heard about this super rare bird flu strain that's got people worried 🀒... i mean, i get why there's concern, but like, let's be real, it's still pretty low risk πŸ’―. i mean, the guy who passed away had some major health issues going on already, so it's not like he was exactly in top shape to deal with some avian flu πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. and from what the docs are saying, there's no evidence of it spreading between people, so that's a huge relief 😌. still, gotta stay vigilant, you know? especially if you're working on farms or around animals. but like, let's not freak out just yet πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ.

πŸ€” I'm kinda surprised it took till now for someone to get sick from H5N5. I mean, we're already dealing with all these other bird flu strains and they've got protocols in place... doesn't make sense that H5N5 is still kinda sneaky like this πŸ™„. But at the same time, it's good that health officials are being proactive and keeping an eye on things. And yeah, I guess it's reassuring to know that public risk remains low? Still can't help but wonder how someone with underlying health conditions ended up coming into contact with infected birds in the first place πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ.

🐦😬 I'm seeing some folks freaking out about this new bird flu strain... honestly, I don't think it's a big deal for most people πŸ™. I mean, yeah, one person has died from it, but the virus doesn't seem to be super contagious between humans 🀧. And with all the precautions being taken by health officials, I think we can breathe easy for now 😌. It's just another reminder to wash our hands regularly and keep an eye on our pets πŸ‘. We've been through this before with H5N1, and it seems like H5N5 is just a minor variation πŸ’ͺ. Let's not jump to conclusions here πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. The CDC has got this under control 🧠.

I'm still remembering when they said H5N1 was all over the farm worker thing... seems like that's gone down some, but now we got this new strain H5N5? πŸ€” It's weird how these things come up again, and it's always someone with health issues who bites the dust. Like, why did he get exposed to domestic poultry first?! πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Anyway, 1 death = low public risk, but what if this thing mutates or gets more contagious? We should be watching...

I mean, can you believe it's 2025 and we're still dealing with bird flu? It feels like my grandma used to always worry about that stuff back in the day... remember when the SARS scare was all over the news? We thought that was bad, but I guess this is even scarier. The fact that there's only one confirmed case though makes me feel a bit better, I suppose. It just goes to show how unpredictable these things can be. Anyway, I hope they find out more about this H5N5 strain soon so we know what we're dealing with... πŸ˜’πŸ¦†

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing 🀯... I mean, it's crazy that a random case can lead to so much attention and worry. Like, I get it, H5N5 is a rare strain and all, but we've had similar cases with H5N1 in the past without it being such a big deal.

And what really gets me is how quickly this news spreads πŸ“°πŸ‘€... one person dies from the flu, and suddenly everyone's talking about it like it's some kind of pandemic. I'm not saying it's no big deal at all, but come on, let's keep things in perspective, right?

I think what worries me more is how we're going to keep this stuff under control 🚫... with the way social media works, news spreads like wildfire, and before you know it, people are freaking out. We need to be vigilant about public health, but we also need to avoid jumping to conclusions and panicking unnecessarily.

What do you guys think? Should we be more concerned about bird flu or is this just a case of bad luck πŸ€”

🚨 just when you thought the bird flu was under control... this new H5N5 strain is like a ticking time bomb πŸ•°οΈ and it's crazy that we still don't know how it transmits between humans πŸ€” i mean, they say the risk to public health is low but what if there are asymptomatic carriers out there? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ we need more research on this one ASAP ⏱️

ugh I'm so sorry to hear about this poor person πŸ€•... it's just devastating that they got sick and passed away from something as preventable as coming into contact with infected poultry πŸ“... my heart goes out to their loved ones πŸ’”... the fact that there is no reason for widespread concern and that health officials are keeping a close eye on anyone who came into contact with them is a huge relief 😌... let's all just take this one step at a time and stay safe, okay? 🀞

It's concerning that we're seeing a jump in H5N5 cases, especially given its relatively low virulence compared to other strains like H5N1 πŸ€”. The fact that this latest case is linked to contact with domestic poultry that had been exposed to wild birds raises questions about the role of animal-human interface in the spread of zoonotic diseases 🦊. I'm glad health officials are taking a cautious approach and monitoring those who came into close contact with the victim, but it's essential to continue studying this strain to better understand its transmission dynamics and potential risks to public health πŸ’‘.

omg u guys, sounds like super scary news about that new bird flu strain πŸ₯😱 but apparently the risk 2 us is still pretty low lol, so lets all breathe a sigh of relief. i mean, it's always good 2 know what's goin on, but in this case, they're not seein any signs of transmission between humans, which is def a plus πŸ™. the fact that it killed an older adult with underlying health conditions kinda makes sense tho, since they were exposed 2 domestic poultry that had been around wild birds... still gonna keep an eye on this one tho 😬
