Watch: Providence releases body cam footage of Brown University shooting response

Providence Unveils 20 Minutes of Body Cam Footage in Response to Brown University Shooting

The City of Providence has released a significant portion of the body cam footage related to the December mass shooting at Brown University, which claimed two lives. The video, consisting of 20 minutes of Lieutenant Patrick Potter's footage, provides an insight into the initial police response to the incident.

According to Mayor Brett Smiley and Police Colonel Oscar Perez, the video aims to strike a balance between transparency and sensitivity regarding the trauma caused by such an event. The release of this footage is part of a public records request that included the Providence Police Department's incident report and the Providence Fire Department's call log.

The video shows Lieutenant Potter coordinating with other law enforcement officers in clearing floors, locating students, searching for the suspect, and getting medical help to victims. He immediately identifies the situation as an active shooter scenario. Notable redactions have been applied to protect the identities of those involved, including victims and witnesses.

During the video, Potter is seen directing officers to search the building, including organizing an armed police escort for medical staff with stretchers. He also expresses concern about the lack of information regarding the suspect's whereabouts, stating that they are "going around with our tails and our heads cut off" until more details are available.

The release of this body cam footage follows dash camera footage previously released, which captured Claudio Manuel Neves Valente fleeing campus after committing the heinous act. The rapid response of Providence police has been praised by officials, who commend their efforts in responding to such a critical situation.

It is essential to note that the video has been redacted and may contain distressing content. Content warning is advised for those viewing this footage.

The investigation into the shooting has been closed, with no further updates on the status of the suspect or any potential charges.

idk about this release of body cam footage...part of me thinks it's good that they're being transparent, but at the same time, i'm worried about the redactions and how much info is actually out there 🤔. 20 minutes of footage is a lot to take in, and not knowing who's involved can be pretty unsettling. also, i feel like we're still missing some context on what exactly happened before the shooting occurred...anyway, gotta respect the city's effort to balance transparency with sensitivity 😐

🤔 I think it's super important that we're getting more info about the Providence Brown University shooting like this body cam footage 📹. Now we can see what was going on behind the scenes and how quickly the police responded to the situation, which is pretty impressive if you ask me 💪. It's also interesting to see Lieutenant Potter coordinating with other officers and trying to keep everyone safe during such a chaotic time 😬.

However, I do feel kinda bad for those involved who have been redacted from the footage – it must be really tough not knowing who they are or what happened to them 🤕. And yeah, this content warning is totally necessary if you're planning on watching the full 20 minutes of footage, as it can get pretty intense 😲.

What's also a bit weird to me is how some people might view this release of footage as a way for the police to "get a clean slate" or whatever 🤷‍♂️. Like, don't get me wrong, transparency is important and all that, but sometimes it feels like we're just trying to avoid dealing with the actual trauma and impact of these events instead of actually addressing them head-on 💔.

Anyway, it's good to have more info out there now, I guess 🤷‍♂️.

just saw the new vid from providence police body cams 🚔💻 and i gotta say, it's crazy how fast they responded in that brown university shooting 🤯! lieutenant potter seems like a total pro, directing his team to find the shooter and get medics on the scene ASAP 💨. but omg, 20 minutes of footage? that's a lotta redacted parts 😅... gotta wonder what we're not seeing 👀. anyway, good job to prov police for trying to strike a balance between transparency and sensitivity 🤝🌎

OMG u guys 🤯 Providence just released 20 mins of body cam footage from the Brown University shooting & it's giving me CHILLS 😨 The officer is literally trying to coordinate a response while they have NO IDEA what's going on 🤦‍♂️ Meanwhile, he's like "we gotta get out there ASAP" but also super concerned about not having enough info 💡 It's wild that they're being super transparent yet still redacting some stuff 👀 I mean, I feel for the people involved but at the same time, we need to know what happened 🤔

I feel bad for Lieutenant Potter 🤕, he's doing a tough job and gotta deal with so much trauma in that situation 😩. I'm all for releasing more footage, but I get why there are redactions - it's still a sensitive topic 💔. The fact that they're trying to strike a balance between transparency and respect is a good approach 🤝. The response from the police was pretty swift, which is great 👍. It's just one of those things where you gotta be prepared for the worst, but hopefully they were able to prevent more harm 💪.
