Waymo plans to launch ‘robotaxi’ service in Detroit - Detroit Metro Times

Waymo Puts Wheels on Detroit Streets with Robotaxi Service Launch

Autonomous car company Waymo is set to introduce its "robotaxi" service in Detroit, the city where it all began for the automotive industry. This latest move brings the fully autonomous ride-hailing service to the Motor City, following successful launches in San Diego and Las Vegas.

Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., has been preparing for this launch by testing its capabilities on Detroit's historic streets during winter weather conditions. The company is proud of its roots in Metro Detroit, having had an engineering team in Novi for years, and has also tested its autonomous vehicles in Michigan's Upper Peninsula to develop their abilities in heavy snow.

Detroit residents are likely to see the first Waymo robotaxis on the streets soon, with the 6th-generation Waymo Driver set to navigate the city. This move is significant for the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan, which has praised organizations like Waymo for providing accessible and safe transportation solutions for people living with epilepsy.

However, it's worth noting that Waymo will need to obtain approval from the state of Michigan to operate driverless cars for commercial purposes. The company already operates autonomous taxis in several other cities across the US.

Waymo fans can sign up for updates on its Detroit launch and be among the first to experience its robotaxi service. With this new launch, Detroiters will get to see the fruits of Waymo's labor firsthand, as the city continues to put itself at the forefront of innovation in the automotive industry.

🚗 I'm loving how Waymo is finally bringing its robotaxi service to Detroit! The fact that they've been testing their vehicles on the city's historic streets during winter weather conditions shows just how serious they are about making this work. I mean, can you imagine navigating through snowy roads in a fully autonomous car? It's mind-blowing! And it's awesome that the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan is giving Waymo its support - people with epilepsy really need accessible transportation options. But yeah, let's hope they get that approval from the state of Michigan ASAP so we can all get behind the wheel (or rather, in the backseat) and experience this tech for ourselves! 🚗💻

And I love that it's going to make such a difference for people with epilepsy - it's like, totally life changing 💕. I'm hyped that we're finally gonna see some robotic rides on our streets 🚗💨! I mean, it's cool that Waymo is putting its roots in Detroit, but can you imagine what my grandpa would think if he knew his city was gonna be one of the first to have robotaxis? He's been a huge car enthusiast since '62 and I'm pretty sure he'd be like "this is the future, kiddo!" 🤣. Still, it's awesome that Waymo's working with the Epilepsy Foundation – safe transportation for all is super important. Now, let's just hope they get those permits sorted out ASAP so we can get our hands on these babies and see how they work in real life 🚗💸
