'We need to win the Champions League': how OL Lyonnes plan to reconquer Europe

Olympique Lyonnais, one of France's most storied football clubs, has rebranded as OL Lyonnes with a bold new goal: reconquering Europe's top club competition, the Champions League. The team, now owned by Michele Kang and Kynisca – a multi-club ownership group dedicated to women's sports – is determined to win the coveted trophy once again.

Under Kang's leadership, OL Lyonnes has invested heavily in building its squad, with recruits snatched from top European clubs. The team's sporting director, Vincent Ponsot, is confident that they have assembled the "best team in the history of women's football." With a strong emphasis on performance and excellence, the club aims to deliver not just wins but also an authentic and inclusive fan experience.

However, convincing fans to attend matches remains a significant challenge. Despite the team's impressive trophy cabinet, attendance has been patchy, with averages of around 5,528 spectators over eight match days. To boost interest, OL Lyonnes is experimenting with innovative marketing strategies, including giant foosball tables and DJ sets at home games.

The club's plans also extend to the construction of a state-of-the-art training centre in Mézieux on the outskirts of Lyon, as well as a purpose-built stadium – pending an agreement with the city council. Financial backing from Kang ensures that OL Lyonnes can compete at the highest level, but the team faces another major obstacle: the gap between its rapid development plan and the broader reality of women's football in France.

The national league is struggling to overcome economic limitations and a sporting culture not conducive to women's sport. As Ponsot notes, while progress has been made since the creation of the Première Ligue, there is still much work to be done in terms of promotion and commercialization. By improving competitiveness at home and injecting new momentum into the under-resourced league, OL Lyonnes hopes to propel French women's football forward.

Ultimately, the stakes are high for OL Lyonnes as it embarks on this ambitious project. Will they succeed in reconquering Europe's top club competition? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: with determination, innovative marketing strategies, and a commitment to excellence, this team is ready to take on the challenge.

🤔 I'm not sure about this rebranding thing... I mean OL Lyonnes sounds like they're trying too hard to be edgy and cool 🤷‍♂️. Can't they just stick with what worked for them in the first place? And what's up with the foosball tables at home games? 😒 It feels like a gimmick to get people to show up, not because anyone actually wants to play foosball before a match 🤦‍♂️. Also, have they thought through the logistics of building that training centre and stadium in Mézieux? It's a bit far out, you know? 💸 Can't they just focus on improving their performance on the pitch first? 😅

I'm low-key hoping OL Lyonnes can make some noise in Europe 🤞🏽 they've got the squad, the talent, and the money - what's missing now is that extra oomph to get fans buzzing about it 😁. The whole 'giant foosball tables' thing might sound weird at first, but trust me, it'll be a vibe 💥 and with the new stadium and training centre on the horizon, this team could be unstoppable 🔥🏆

I don't usually comment but I think it's kinda weird that they're rebranding as OL Lyonnes instead of just keeping the original name... 🤔 it feels like they're trying too hard to appeal to a new audience? 🤷‍♀️ and what's up with the giant foosball tables at home games? 😂 seems like more of a gimmick than an actual way to build fan interest... I mean, I'm all for trying new things but it feels like they're not focusing on the most important thing: the team itself. 🏆

[🏆💪] omg did u know ther r more men in france playing football 4 women than w8n? 🤷‍♂️ [🗣️💼] ol lyonnes gotta change ur strategy from "w8n 1st" 2 "get more fans" 🔊👥

I don’t usually comment but... I think it’s cool that OL Lyonnes is trying to revamp their brand and attract more fans. They're investing a lot in their squad and have some talented players 🤩. But at the same time, I feel like they need to focus on building a stronger connection with their community and not just relying on fancy marketing gimmicks like foosball tables 🏓. The fact that attendance is still pretty low is concerning, especially since the team has such a rich history. Maybe if they can find a way to make matches more accessible and affordable, they'll start to see more fans showing up 💸. And yeah, it's frustrating to hear about the challenges women's football faces in France 🤕. They need more support and resources to keep growing and competing at the highest level 👏.
